queston for mxt

New member
now is the mxt as hard to keep program as the dfx or does it stays on the same program.is it easier than the m6.can u use the coin and relic programs together at the sametime or u have to have seperate hunts.thxs

You really don't program the MXT, you choose a mode. This can be coin and jewelry, relic, or prospecting. No you can only run one mode at a time, but with the flip of a switch you can switch back and forth between modes. Neither is harder to use. There are some differences the m6 is a silent search and the MXT uses a threshold. The M6 has a tone system and the MXT really doesn't. Rob.

I have the MXT. The M6 is $100 dollars cheaper. The first consideration is if you want a silent search or threshold based machine. If you will mostly be hunting coins the M6 has the tone feature for IDing coins. Both machines are based on the same platform so neither is deeper or more sensitive. The M6 is basically a MXT in coin and jewelry mode. Guys should decide which detector they will buy. Have you ever seen a bad detector review? I don't like when people tell you their detector is the best. Their is no one best detector for all situations. Good luck, Rob

Hi Newbie01, I have an M-6, and like it, but I had a MXT (2) yrs. ago, and wish I kept it!! The MXT has a better handle system like the XLT or DFX!! Also, has the Prospecting Mode for Gold Prospecting or checking the Iron Content of the ground you are hunting. It only has (2) tone ID, and the tones are very distinctive!! The
M-6 has (7) tone ID or Single Tone ID, whichever you prefer. Personally, I think the (7) tones ARE NOT THAT GOOD, they ARE NOT VERY DISTINCTIVE, just my own opinion!! The M-6 has a Beach Mode, which they say is Smoother Running and More Stable on saltwater beaches, than the MXT, but I CANNOT ATTEST TO THAT FACT!!
VERY INPORTANT, the Coin Mode on the MXT is VERY WEAK as far as DEPTH GOES, so use the RELIC MODE which has (2) Tone ID!! Hope this helps, Les Robinson.

ok les can can u find coin on the relic mode.i live in wv so i dont hunt salt water;beaches lol.i coin;relic hunt alot so which one would fit me better.thxs

Here is part of Monte's post on the main Whites forum. As he says there is very little difference if any between the MXT and M6 in the C/J mode. Actually on a deep dime in my test garden, with my MXT, I get an audio hit in C/J and not in the relic mode. Rob

If you put the MXT in Coin & Jewelry mode and adjust the Threshold (Tuner) control to a point just slightly below an audible hum, or just into a "silent search" setting, you will have performance similar to an M6. The M6 was developed by using the basic MXT circuitry, and shares the same auto-tracking, Sensitivity/Gain, and Discriminate adjustments. But the M6 was designed with the Threshold level factory set at a point where it's just a little silent. Thus, not as noisy as the MXT.

The M6 will hunt relics on par with the MXT, as well as coins and the beach.

Well, the good thing is that you can't go too far wrong on either. I have an MXT I bought in June and am very pleased with it at this point. I feel the three hunting modes built into it make a very versatile detector and as I live in an area where I may have the opportunity to prospect now and then the prospecting mode is worth the extra price to me. Another advantage for both detectors is the good variety of coils available.

Sure, the M6 is $100 cheaper, and now, with x-mas and the economic cruch most
of us are experiencing, saving $100 is attractive. But the MXT has the advantage of
having the prospecting mode as well. SOme day
you may WANTn this feature and the M6 won't have it. Also attractive is that there is no programming
the machine. I own trhe MXT and have had no problems with it. Its a great machine.you decide on the
MXT you can always buy it used. I bought mine for $300 and have had no problems. I agonized over
that as well. I put the question out to different forums and almost everyone said, that while its
always a gamble bying used, the MXT seldom has problems I called Whites and told them I
wanted to buy used. They told me it was rare to have an MXT returned for electronic problems.
The only new is that you get a warrenty and the piece of mind that comes with it. You decide.

I would check out the many forums and read everything I could from people asking
questions about the M6 and the MXT. There have been many questions raised by
owners of the M6 and MXT right here at Finds Forums.

Also go to www.metaldetectorreviews.net and read the comments by owners the these two
machines. With all this you should be able to make a decision. I know it can be agonizing!
Also go to www.treasurequest.com and read the field reports on the M6 and the MXT.

Good luck on your decision.

Here is a report from a happer camper who owns the M6, but remember that there
are more people out there who may not agree wth him. whenever you get any machine, You have to take time to get to know it.
Its probably not the machine thats off, so much as it is the person useing it.:)-)

Short review From Rommelvon:
My whites M6 review

Hi all, I feel the need to tell my story, I have had my M6 since august, I have found more coins and jewelry with this machine than my 2 previous machines combined, also, older and deeper, This M6 has hunted alongside every top non whites detector out there and also the DFX, MXT, IDX......on the beach, the beach mode pulls deep targets in wet and dry sand with no feedback at all...performs like a dream, on inland farms, fields, parks etc....the M6 shines, my latest 2 deep finds (merc and a walker) were in a patch of land that had just been hunted by a Minelab SE, the ML missed them, the M6 did not, both were at around 9 inches in compacted earth and the M6 target ID was spot on both times, I was using the stock 950 coil and the soil here is very dry, I'm a true believer that the wetter the soil, the better the detecting but dry soil doesn't hurt the depth of the M6. I also use the 5.3 coil in trashy areas and have found several silver coins in areas of the park that is trashed with pulltabs, fence clippings etc...I get an average depth of about 7 on the 5.3 coil. It is in my opinion the White's M6 is the best coin and jewelry machine out there, and it does a darn good job of finding relics as well, just go zero discr and you will pull bullets at 9 inches, and the deepest button I have found so far was a 7. the fellow I hunted the last farm with is selling his ML to get a whites, we have hunted all types of land together and the white's always reigns supreme, so if you are looking for the best coin and jewelry detector out there...get an M6...you will not regret it.....oh and also get a quality set of headphones, ones made for detectors, I use the Gray Ghost deep woods phones....you hear every tiny sound the detector makes...plus they keep your ears warm on cold days......Happy Hunting all----Rommelvon

i cant decide which one to get mxt or m6.its 50/50 rught know.i live in wv so we dont have to much gold or beaches.i mainly coin and relic hunt. i wonder with the mxt how u can coin/relic hunt sametime.it sounds like the m6 is easier to hunt both.thxs

If your in a rural area where you may not be cursed with high levels of modern trash the MXT would most likely be the detector of choice and would be mine also, but if you live in an area infested with layers of modern trash and you want to somehow navigate through all that trash with the help of tone id the M6 is a logical choice and the one i chose.I happen to live in an area where many good older targets aren't all that deep but target masking is the major problem at most public older sites and target separation with the use of smaller coils and Tone ID has helped make some nice finds. I don't have the free time yet to really dig it all and need all the help i can get to help make quicker decisions. Just some thoughts. HH Bill

Newbie, except for the ID tones, hunting in C/J is the same for both the MXT and M6. Some guys I know with M6's don't even use the tone feature. They use the disc setting. Some guys with MXT's only hunt in C/J mode. The the screen, VDI numbers, bars, and icons are the same on both machines. As I said I can set my MXT to run silent like the M6 if I want so even that makes no difference. You set the disc the same, the gain the same, and the auto trac the same.

Look you can't go wrong with either. Spend the extra $100 or don't. I've had two stories excepted by Whites about hunting with the MXT. I got a $200.00 certificate and now one of the new $100.00 certificates. Both machines will find coins and relics. I've found over 10,000 coins this year, so the MXT will find coins, and I hunt trashy parks and schools with a small coil.

Listening to us will not make your final discision. You have heard from both the M6 and MXT uses. We both like our machines. I've had private messages with Rommelvon about hunting. He has the M6 and I've got the MXT. When we exchange tips they work with both machines. When I asked Greg Moscini for hunting tips for my MXT he sent me the M6 tips sheet. Rob

If your interested you can go to this website and read more information about the MXT.

If this doesn't come out as a link then cut and paste as an address.
Good luck!!!

Think of what type hunting you will be doing with your machine. I had this decision to make several months back,on the same two machines that you are asking about. I opted for the M6. I could have bought the MXT,it wasnt the money. The MXT is a fine machine. Both machines are easy to learn,or I should say operate. I made the M6 my first purchase but its not my last. I will buy another detector to compliment it.
But, you said you had til spring so just stay up on the reading. You never know, Whites or any other company may come out with a new and best that you may like. Just be carefull in your reading because of prejudice feelings on a certain machine or company.
Best of luck,
John

thxs john.i do alot of coin hunting but i really like relic hunt to when i find the place.i have search to place to relic hunt i rather do that then coin hunt.but most i fine is coins. i have a prizm iv now and does a wonderful job gut i want upgrade.the only thing i dont like about the mxt is that u cant relic/coin hunt sametime with the same program like u can with the m6.its a hard decision.

Remember that the VDI numbers are the same on every program. Once you get accustomed to the numbers you can have a basic idea of what you are detecting. I relic hunt all the time in coin/jewelry mode. I hear that there is less depth in this mode but I havent noticed. I think you are more limited with the M6 because it is not as versatile and tunable. There are some charts around that give the VDI numbers of common things found. I know some people that laminate them and take it with them. just because you have it in coin and jewelry does not mean that you are limited to only coins and jewelry, It will just say what coin the machine thinks it is and a vdi number, the latter of which never changes from either mode. Personally I use an MXT, but one thing I am certain of is that you cant go wrong with either one. Take peoples opinions for what they are: OPINIONS!! The only way to truly know what you really want is to go to your local metal detector shop and ask for a demonstration and maybe a testdrive of each if possible. Every person has different views of the perfect metal detector, go and decide yours. Both have been tried and tested. You will enjoy either one that you decide, and they are both made in the USA. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
