I echo cheeseheads reply. Not too start any trouble or anything, but have you people done your home work? Anything left in the ground can be contaminate by minerals, water or earthly debris. Oops, not to dampen your understanding, but the VDI does NOT necessarily go up with a higher percentage of gold in your target. The VDI will go up with an increase in the size of a gold target (more grams) somewhat, but what really affects VDI in gold targets is the alloying metal, as I stated in my previous post. Don't believe me? Check the VDI on pure (24K) gold. It will be low unless it is a large target. 18K rings on medium size will often ring less than VDI of 20, many in the "foil" area. My wife has a large 24K bangle bracelet - over an ounce - and it VDIs at 14. A dos pesos gold coin (a small Mexican gold coin that i think is 90% gold, approximately 21K) VDIs at 22 or so.

You are probably right. The only 24K item I have been able to test is a $20 gold coin. (Allot there)
But this 18K ring is way smaller than my 14K one and rings allot higher on the VDI.May have to do with the alloys
Every solid 18K ring I tested at the jewelry store rang in the 50's
