Question on the Tesoro Vaquero

oldkoot

Well-known member
I know the Vaquero came in two different versions the first version had a lower tone than the later version, there was a Gray version and a Black Version

The original gray version the tone was a low flatter sounding tone and people would send them back to Tesoro or somewhere to have a tone Mod done to give their Vaquero the higher tone, the original gray Vaquero also came with the 9x8 concentric coil as well where as the Black Version came with a 9x8 DD Coil

can someone tell me if the the Black version Vaquero came out with the higher pitched tone mod already done ???
the Black Version also came with the 11x8 DD coil

some people I have talked to say the higher tone Vaquero makes the targets really pop when you swing over a target, I know with my Tejon I run the pitch of the tone pretty high and when I set the pitch high like that the targets seem to stand out more than they do on my low tone Vaquero

I know the Vaquero I own is the Low Tone

The Vaqueros originally had only the low tone along with the Cibola, and like you stated, you could have the modification done at the factory to change the tone to the high tone for $15 which was similar to the tone on the earlier Tesoros.
When I bought mine in 2007, some dealers offered it in a standard (low)
tone, or the high tone.
I bought the high tone model and love it.
I believe the later versions with the black color and 8x11DD coils also could be ordered with both tones.
I can more when I am over iron with the high tone as it gives a sharp raspy sound unlike non ferrous targets.
I always read where others preferred setting the tone on the Tejon to a higher pitch because they could tell when over iron better.
I think the low or standard tone on the Vaquero is 293khz and the high tone is around 630khz.
