Question for other Excal II users ? 04-16-10

Ok, My machine setting most of the time are all metal, disc. 1, sens. at 11 to 12 o'clock. volume almost full, and tresh. just audible. I get a target, then switch to disc. Why is it that bent nails, wire, and rusted nails still give a high coin sound till you disturb the sand with the first dig, then they null or break up? Thanks Gene

Not sure, good question on the disc., tone..think it has something to do with the halo of the item?
but if I'm hunting AM/PP and I cross swing the target I get a double beep and most of the time I pass this target up.......... which I have checked and it was a Bobby Pin, piece of wire or nail...but sometimes chains or necklaces come into the double beep category , so I am taking a chance of passing them up. Good question for CJC..............................................................joe

That's a good question Gene. I've experienced those type of problems but I'm not knowledgable enough to answer your question. But I can read peoples answers that are. HH :minelab:

Gene, I can only surmise that the rusting of the nail or wire can enlarge the field of response to the detector, but if you're talking about in the water, then it would have to be pretty deep in the sand to lie undisturbed long enough for the build-up to happen. It is possible that the rusty item could hold together until it is disturbed by the scoop, then the rust breaks up (and off the item) leaving the rest to be found by you in the scoop. I really am guessing here, but applying what happens on dry land to the beach/water. Dont know if this has helped at all, but thought I would try to contribute something.:)

Gene, I am not able to give an answer, but have found the same thing. I use pretty well the same settings as you , maybe sens a touch lower.

It just doesn't make since that a iron mask machine would even give a signal on anything but larger iron. It my been what the wire or iron is made of. Some nails are made of other stuff other then iron so i can see that it would make some kind of noise. Gene

Gene, I remember years ago when I was detecting with my Tiger Shark at a small beach and was discriminating out iron. I started picking up nails, one after the other and thought my machine had gone nuts. When I was able, I ckecked the nails and found that they were copper...the type used in boat building, so that explained those nails..

I believe it is the halo. Very rusty pop tops sometimes aren't scratchy sounding and have near a gold growl. They always come up very encrusted and rusty to the point that they break apart.

The Etrac has a similar mystery with bent nails.

imo its the metal compound..???ive picked up same stuff at times..
hope this helps out??
