question about meter on the right side of machine

I got my machine back today and took it out to the front yard, got it going and started to swing it, as it hit a target, the machine gave me a VDI number and the right side where the depth meter is, lit up to so many inches, when I pinpointed it was 2 inches less, so what is this meter telling me when I'm swinging over a target, thanks, oh by the way, it's snowing here, Friday it was 68 degrees, tomorrow I'm taking the AT Pro to a field

Approximate depth on a coin sized target. Usually when you pinpoint your coil is lower to the ground. So that may be your difference. I rarely look at the depth because the tone tells me.

I usually use the audio like khouse. Getting too wrapped up with what the meters tell you on most tid machines can lead to a lot of frustration. I usually detune the coil 2-3 times when pinpointing off the center of the coil, which will throw the accuracy way off for depth. Once you get a some more time on the machine, you will develop that gut feeling with the audio to get a good estimate of the targets size and depth. It usually takes a good 100 hours on a detector to truly learn it well.
