question about athletic fields

MrGee

New member
I haven't had very much luck with them. when you guys hunt baseball diamonds, soccer fields, etc. DO you have more luck with spectatator areas or the actual playing field?

Not related but a random thought: the US needs to do away with the one dollar bill. If nobody carries dollar coins, they can't lose them and I can't find them. I'm jealous of Canadians where theyu seem to be common.

I havent gone On to any field... i hunt around the
perimiter and concession stands, under bleachers
and where folks walk... easy to tell.. mostly new stuff
is what I find ..a few tokens etc etc

I'm with Old Ranger on this one...if we ever dug up a football field in Texas they would hang us...

i never dig on the playing surface,i would be irate if my kid twisted an ankle and it would be a surefire way to never be able to come back.now my question, when i go under bleachers my md goes nuts.its an ace 250.is there a premium setting to use? it doesnt matter if they are aluminum steel or wood.

Fozzy id lower the sens a bit ..also if you have
a sniper coil use it there...
and dont overlook the gravel around the
concession stand ( s)

Soccer and football fields - around the edges where people stand and out in the areas where weekend warriors play soccer, touch football, throw frisbees, etc. If there are areas at the ends of the fields on the other side of the track, hunt them. I hunted a football field that gave up little but when I crossed the track at one end and hunted the area where all their equipment was stored I picked up about seven bucks. Always hunt the not so obvious spots no matter how unproductive they look.

One time I hunted a school that gave up very little then I spied a two foot wide stretch of grass between the sidewalk and the driveway that ran all the way from the front of the school out to the street. My " It ain't been hit" bell went off and I pulled a slew of coins out of that tiny strip including a couple of walking libertys. If it looks lousy for coins - HUNT IT.

I hunted a steep bank facing a ballfield that set my bell off as I could picture kids sliding and rolling down it and folks sitting and laying on it to watch the ball games, and beeper swingers avoiding it because it was tough to traverse and didn't look productive. It was about 75 yards long and I pulled twelve bucks plus trinkets off that bank.

If the concession stand is mobile hunt under the front of it as far as you can reach. People drop change and it winds up there. If it has a wooden platform in front of it for customers to stand on, raise it up and hunt under it. Also hunt the path spectators take going to and from it and the area out in front of it for several yards..

Why would you worry about the playing surface. Cleats and the aerator they run over the field tears it up worse than you ever could. Course I don't dig holes for people to step into to begin with. You can't even tell where I've been.

thanks for all the tips guys. I've tried some of all of those areas and have had little luck. guess I best just be patient. There are a lot of parks around here that have sand volleyball and no matter what, I always check those. Found my first ring on one of those. and Uncle Willy, you're right...during a baseball, soccer or football game, they tear the field up much worse that I do. (love that collection of rings that you posted). All I've found are girls rings. Still waiting for a really nice mens ring that I can wear.

In back of the goal posts is a good spot also where the players pile their bags and equipment. I've found a few rings in those spots.

Soccer fields can be great. As mentioned BE SURE to fix your holes or pop the coins out. Here's my observations:

The sports field itself can be very productive. Use your larger search coil. Work in a grid-like pattern perhaps paralleling the goalposts. Many times there are coin spills. You will usually find less trash than normal in the fields, because the kids are playing - they're not eating and drinking and littering. Rings are sometimes found. Be certain to work the area around the goalposts. This is often a hot spot.

Area for onlookers: Many coin spills possible here also. People are sitting in their folding chairs and coins spill from their pockets. Lots of other activity going on in the sidelines. However, there is usually a greater ratio of trash/treasure than you would find on the field itself due to onlookers snacking and littering. On the other hand - you usually have a smaller area to search. A sniper coil can be handy here. Drive by the sports field at their peak traffic times and you can see where the spectators gather. Look for shade trees in this area if any. People gather under these while watching.

Area by curb. A GREAT area at times! About eight feet and closer to the curb. Vending trucks come by and park at the curb. You just can't hear those coins drop on the grass. They often go unnoticed until you locate them. People approaching their parked cars along the curb. Reach for the car keys and out come a few coins along with the keys. Can't hear them fall - they are waiting for you my friend!

If they have soccer teams, may play several days per week. The area is replenished with coins pretty regularly. Early morning or later evening hunts after the crowds leave can be best.

Soccer fields can be a fun place to hunt - give it a try!

I have never done too well on the playing area myself. I have found some stuff but have always done a lot better in the spectator area especially if theres a hill or embankment overlooking the playing field. That's where people sit and kids roll around and that's where most of the goodies are. If you can get in where there's bleachers and work that spot you can do quite well but be prepared to dig a lotta lotta trash. Goes with the territory. Now I'll tell you this too, the best time to hunt an athletic field at a school is Saturday and/or Sunday mornings. No prying eyes around. Everybodys asleep or in church. You can hunt in any mode you want, coin or coin/jewelry. Really don't matter. You are going to find a lot of your recoveries aren't very deep there, at least they aren't here. Most of the stuff is going to be in the 2 to 4 inch range with a few slopping over into the 5 inch mark. Good luck and happy hunting.

I usually do better in the spectator areas as well. Most sports fields in NC are for kids sports and we have rules that you can't wear jewelry while playing. Even if it were allowed, most kids don't have expensive jewelry anyways, nor do they have a pocket full of coins while playing. Adult fields would probably fare well, especially softball or volleyball.

It ain't the kids that lose the stuff, it's the weekenders playing soccer, touch football, playing frisbee or throwing them for their dog, laying on the grass, etc.

I hunted a soccer field last year and found a 1803 large cent and my son found a1800 large cent. Turns out the field was once a farmers field along side of the original road going into to town.. Because of a shortage of overnight housing and of coarse no money travelers would camp outside of town for the night. So you never know.Old sites are all around us.

You were right Uncle Willy. I went back to a middle school football field and hunted the field this time instead of the spectators area. I found 43 coins and two sterling silver rings in the middle of the field. The two rings were 3 foot apart. The first ring was a mans ring with a tigers eye stone and rung up as quarter and the second ring was a girls ring that rang up as a dime. Thanks for the tip. Use just never know.
