Prototype SS Beach Scoop

Beachcomber

New member
For the past 6 months I have been working with Joe of DeMarco Detector Sales (a sponsor on the Findmall Forums) in the design of a new
Stainless Steel Long Handled Beach Scoop that will work in the water, on the wet sand, and up on the dry section of the beach. As most of you who have been hunting for years and who like me have tried pretty much every scoop under the Sun already know there is no one perfect scoop for the Ocean Beach Hunter. Mesh scoops work great in the dry sand but wear out quickly when used in the water or on the wet sand. So I set out to design a totally Stainless Steel Mesh scoop that could hold up to use in all three areas of the beach. I wasn't going to Post anything until the scoop was totally done but with all the discussion about scoops over the past couple of weeks and because the scoop is in it's final stages of development and testing we decided it would be a good time to show the final prototype. There are still a few changes that are going to be made but they are fairly minor. For those interested in the details the scoop is 12.5" from the tip of the Duckbill to the back of the footpad. It is 6" in diameter. The handle is 1.25" diameter and 48" long. The entire scoop is Stainless Steel including the mesh and the handle.

The scoop should weigh in at right around 6lbs. Part of the added weight comes from the 1.25" diameter handle and the footpad. Over the years I have broken many 1" diameter SS and Aluminum Handles but so far I have never broken the handle on any scoops that I have used which had the 1.25" SS handles which is why I chose to go with the larger handle.

Great looking scoop, I have used many over the last 15 years and I'am using the sunspot at the present time. I would like to know dealer pricing as I have been selling detectors and accessories for 12 years and may consider selling your scoop at my shop. How much does it weigh? Chris

that really does look like the ultimate design. Great sifting like the mesh ones but the strength to handle water hunting and rocks.

I would like to be one of the first to pre-order one of your scoops.
she's a real strong looking beaut. remember my post. and my handle is Rusty.

Beachcomber,Thats one sleek lookin scoop you got there, very nice design.
Would also work great on Aussie Beaches,

What is approx weight of scoop,my scoop i use now is 9.48lbs,its got to be lighter than that by the looks of it.

Chris,
At this time we are finishing the design. That this point he do not have an acounting of material costing. So, we cannot give a real price without this information. Even a dealers cost. This should all be finalized in the coming weeks.

That is a great looking scoop! I know it will be of excellent quality because I know that everything you make or modify is of the utmost superior quality and workmanship. The only question I have is what size are the mesh holes in the scoop?

G,day Beachcomber,
The weight of my scoop, which I'm used to now, doesn't really bother me when I'm in the water.I normally hunt up to 10hrs if the Gold & Coins keep coming!!!
I would also be keen in getting a scoop made by you depending on final price & depending on freight cost to Australia.
In Australia we don't have much of a Variety to choose from limited dealers,in different states, with only about 2 different long handled scoops to choose from & No Where as strong as your scoop they are around $200+ ( Aus Dollars)
** But can the basket size be increased to 7" inches diam,or are you only making 6" diam baskets as per profile template.
Also what Gauge S/S is used on scoop ? is 316 or 14,12
The Handle, because I'm a Tall bugger 6.5ft what is your fabricated length you make & is it 3mm x1.25" S/S ,my current scoop is 54" inches long or 1.37m to accommodate my height.
Another point & I'm certainly not picking Faults with your design,It's a awesome scoop, but Would it be possible to position the handle approx 5-6 inches back from front of bucket & still give enough support in braces to give extra depth of target.

I've tried to get a custom scoop made, very similar design to yours.
By a Local Business here in Victoria Australia that works in all grades & gauges of S/S & Aircraft Aluminium. They have the equip to make my scoop but the price they quoted me for a one off scoop was Bloody Outrageous $350 Aus!!! Stone The Crows
My Quote was for a small sheet of S/S 316 Gauge,Bucket 7" inch Diam x 12" long, front tip of bucket to foot rest.Using about 5" of S/S Mesh in the back of bucket for quick drainage
The pole is S/S 1.25" Diam x3mm -With 2 Bends to form a Ergonomic Shape with a Helper Handle 1" Diam x3mm x6" long at a 90degree angle.

If this Scoop can be built by You "Beachcomber",at a More Reasonable cost than my quote.I'm Ordering NOW!!!!
6-8 Weeks I'll wait if i have to (Cant bloody walk anyway for 6 Weeks on crutches, had surgery on Friday on Left Foot.I have now got a 4"Long titanium plate & 6 screws in my foot.

Cheers Freddy :ausflag:
