ProPointer Keeps Beeping

OK, I have had this ProPointer nearly 2 years if not more. It has now begun to remain beeping after detecting the target, even after lifting it in the air. The wand doesn't have metallic residue(it is clean) and the thing will stop beeping if I either switch it off and on, or gently tap it on something. Next hole...probably the same thing again. Y'all had this happen? martin

That is the first thing I checked, battery is over 9V. I have a second, newer, ProPointer so it's not a roadblock today. Thanks. martin

Yep same thing happens occasionally. Then there are other days when it acts normal. It definitely gets frustrating. I'll be getting a replacement soon.

get in that battery compartment, and clean the contacts and make sure they are not bent down to far so they make good contact...If that fails, put a thin piece of cardboard on top of the battery before you screw on the cover...

HH,

I just got my propointer back from warranty service for the second time since November for the same problem.

They replaced the coil and cleaned it up. Hopefully it will stop doing this. This time they threw in a Garrett
digger at no charge.

Service has been good but this seems to be a sensitivity issue. When working around hot rocks you might
as well put it away.

Hey tcornel, how long did it take to get yours back? Just sent mine back a week ago and already I'm going crazy without it. Having one of those things really makes you lazy and I can't find anything without it.

MrGee

Mine just bit the dust also...I get that siren two-tone beeping...The siren of death I call it...I have to send it in along with my GTI 2500 (manufactured in 1999)...I am upgrading the 2500 to the new chipset...I will lose the Treasure Talk (Annoying Anyways), but will gain a more stable machine with an easier to use backlight...The treasure talk button now becomes the backlight button...Better than scrolling to the end of the menus to get to it. I will also get a newer 9.5" spider coil. I currently have the older white coil, that tends to get cracks on the bottom of the coil where the seems are...Gonna cost me about $75 bucks (including shipping) and take about 10 days to get it back...Not too bad...They have to replace the whole board on my machine...If it was made after 2004, they would just have to replace the chip(s), and it would not cost so much.
But I will have a like new machine that is perfectly tuned to the new 9.5 coil...YEAH!!!!

HH,

Sound like you're going to have a nice setup there gopher. If I could afford it right now, I'd upgrade too. Been thinking about the AT Pro. Sound like a workable machine/

MrGee

I often wish I would have kept my AT Pro...Ain't nothing that hunts like it, and I LIKED it!!!
Not the most portable machine if you do not have a vehicle, but hunts like no one's business

HH,

Total time for shipping both ways and repair was about 11 days.

I used my Pistol Probe and really missed the fine accuracy of the Propointer.
However nothing beats the Pistol Probe for determining where to dig.

I use the AT Pro, then Pistol Probe and the Propointer once the hole
is open and in range for it.

Well, it is weird...I fully charged my rechargeable batteries and stuck one back in the Pro Pointer, and now it seems to be OK...Guess I am going to use nothing but Alkalines in it...Save the Powerex rechargeable 9.6V for the CZ 7a Pro.

HH,

Update on my problem. I contacted Brad at Garretts, good dude to deal with, and he said "Sure, get it in and we'll fix it." I knew the 2 years HAD to be close to expiring, and it was, so my being fortunate enough to live a short drive away from Garretts in Garland Texas, I personally delivered the pointer yesterday and waited for repairs. In and out in 30 minutes, they changed the coil, which meant they delivered it back to me looking spanking brand new since the coil replacement meant an entire housing swap. One added by-product of the repair was that all the hum and rattle that I had slowly accepted as normal, was gone. Nice, crisp tone now. It feels and sounds new. I like service like that!, especially after my first repair work was covered after I stupidly was responsible due to playing "bench technician" myself and disassembling the thing, destroying the on-off switch in the process. Garretts did not have to cover that free of charge. All in all, I am very pleased with Garretts and the ProPointer, Owning two of them now has been a good feeling, just in case. I wouldn't hunt without one, and that is a plain simple fact. martin

It is funny that they did not use a 6 or 5 volt regulator in these units...It would have made the battery last longer, but the buzzer and vibrator would have been weaker maybe...

HH,

Funny you said that!! i just sent mine in this Friday for the same thing! an like you i called brad an he stated that it was the coil an to send it in to them. but also since i have a dealer to work with don hinks at Gettysburg electric he gave me his to use really nice gentleman to work with.!

I wanted to send my 2500 in for the chip upgrade since I haven't used it in 12 weeks, but I just hate to send it off. I just know when I do that's when I will feel like using it and be moaning and groaning because it's either at the Garrett factory or in transit. Maybe it's just separtion anxiety. lol
This could be a good excuse to buy a backup, but the refrigerator stopped working, the riding lawn mower quit working and I had to spend some money on some other things I hadn't planned on. When it rains, it pours. We did get the first rain in some time in zone 8b and it was 1 inch and 2/10ths and it was a blessing.
I've never had a moments trouble with my propointer and that's a blessing. Hope you get yours repaired or replaced, because it sure saves a lot of time when you're dirt fishing.

Hello 5900,
Yup, had the same problem; couldn't trust it. Tried new batteries, and tapping it with my digger. Would clear up for a few minutes but then would start vibrating and beeping in the air. Finally sent it in and boy do I miss it. On the bright side, have really learned to pin-point well with the AT-Pro and with the pointer in the shop have been spending most of my time in the water. Found my first gold ring today!

I don't know what I'd do if I only owned 1 propointer. Well yes I do. Garretts is only about 30 minutes from here, but if it was a weekend or I was traveling, I'd be SOL. I gotta have the spare now. The strange thing is that this pointer with the coil problem had been into Garrets within the year and they put a new skin and coil on it then. I've favored using the newer one since that repair, so it was kinda odd that the coil went south, luck of the draw. BTW, it wasn't the coil and beeping problem that last repair. I appreciated the new case and coil though. It looked brand new. Tomorrow will be the test on the one I just got the new coil for. I have a fun group hunt planned so I'll use that one just to be sure it is really fixed. I hope that you get yours back soon!
