Promoting the hobby @ schools

Well, the way I see it, lots of kids these days are staying inside, playing video games, computer games, etc. Promote the hobby so more of these kids get out of the house and smell the air ! Get dirty, do some research...work the brain a different way.

I try to get my 9 year old son out with his detector at least once or twice a week and once a weekend...even for 1/2 hour or so at the local park. Tons of fun and he gets into it more and more.

Also, competition makes everyone better. If I see more and more great finds on the forums, it makes me want to get out more...gets the juices flowing.

And don't we always say a site is never hunted out ? So...what's the worry ? Also, take a look at any of the beaches you hunt ( if you have the opportunity to). There is NO WAY these beaches are hunted out...especially the ocean beaches. You could have thousands of new detectorists out there and you will still find good sutff.

More power to any one who takes time out of their life to help educate the young folks.

Remember...this is ultimately a hobby. Just because there is an opportunity to make some money doesn't mean we shouldn't promote it and want others to join in.

Each should be allowed to pursue it as they see fit. We dont always agree, but we should not insist others do it our way.

I am not insisting anyone 'do it' my way. My first sentence indicated how I see things. If others feel that having more detectorists in the mix is a bad thing, that's fine with me.

But when the younger generation becomes educated in other areas ( such as hobbies...fishing, hunting, detetecting, astronomy, etc. ) I beleive it is always a good thing.

First of all, to Bill Ladd: kudos and respect  for inspiring a new generation and imparting our hobby's code of ethics. You done good!

Secondly, this whole thing about worrying about schoolkids someday becoming competition seems really silly to me, on a whole bunch of different levels that I don't want to take the time to get into.

If I was going to worry about something down the road affecting me enjoying this hobby it would be more restrictive laws caused by a few irresponsible detectorists. My mother always said a few can always spoil it for the many and that's really true in our hobby. By promoting ethical detectoring to youngsters, Bill is doing a very positive thing.

I realize there are exceptions, but most of us are middle aged or older. A lot of us won't be around in 10 years. Even more in 20 or 30. I think it's a great thing to share the enthusiasm for such a positive thing with kids.

Finally, I don't agree with Jerry and Ivan and I'm telling them so. But they have a right to their opinion.

And for Tony to belittle them and then say I'm out of here and act like those of us on the Fisher forum have the plague, sorry Tony that's really weak.

If you have the cables that have the composite ends on the one side ( that go into the vid camera) and the other side has the small microphone plug, you may be able to run it into the mic jack on the computer. The problem becomes does your computer and software recognize the input.

I know there are some AV forums out there you can do a search on.

But I probably would have gone off on these 2 and said something "unprofessional" ;)
Barnicle Bill hit the nail on the head & posted exactly what I was thinking............
If the 2 killjoys were actually any good with a detector, they would clean out the spots like I do LONG before these youngsters grow up.
If I had that kind of paranoid thinking, I wouldn't be writing stories and making DVD's showing people tips and how I do things.

I started in this hobby when I was 8 years old myself so I'm just trying to give back. Hunting over 30 years I have amassed a collection that should be shared,,,,unlike archies who throw everything into the dusty basements of museams. Kids touching a piece of history for a day makes it all worthwhile. You fellas don't see their faces light up like I do so you really don't have a clue......

that is really cool. i just got back from my daughters show and tell in her 3rd grade class this morning. guess what her presentation was? me, my metal detector and some of my finds. the kids LOVED it. it wasnt as huge as yours. i spoke to about 20 or so kids. but it was very rewarding. the teacher was even getting into it. I had one kid tell me that he had a metal detector but never found anything so he didnt like the hobby, but after the presentation he says he just may get back into it. My daughter and I were even presented with a picture drawn by one of her friends of my metal detector. it was drawn on a post-it. how cool is that? Congrats on your presentation though, the kids are so neat. :detecting: by the way...i showed off the F2.

Bill,
What is the date of your next gig in Newton? I'd like to check it out. I've been considering joining that club.
