Problems with T-Rex Scoop

Shortly after I purchased my T-Rex scoop the weld snapped at the base. I contacted T-Rex and they did offer to either replace it (which I didn't want to spend a small fortune to ship it back) or have a local welder fix it. I chose the local welder option and shortly thereafter the weld broke again. The welder said that the point where the handle attaches to the base has a lot of stress on it and the design should have been better. Someone suggested I use JB Weld so I tried that, now I have a ton of JB Weld and that broke as well, now I have JB Weld all over my scoop and I can't remove it.

I see the newer model now has a support that now goes in the very same spot where mine broke, hmmm...you think they knew this was a flaw for some time now? I contacted T-Rex once more not expecting them to fix or replace it but to simply give me any ideas on how to fix it myself and they never replied. I will never purchase or recommend this T-Rex scoop to anyone just for the fact they didn't get back to me. $169.00 and I can't get a return email, sad.

Sunspot will repair any brand scoop for $25 + pay return shipping last time I looked at their site. (repairs to their scoops are free) Not ideal, but minimizes your $ damages.

Hi DaytonaGold, I'm NOT making EXCUSES for Gold DIggers Detector Sales, but his STORE is CLOSED on WEEKENDS, and also CLOSES at 5pm. on WEEKDAYS!! Ron may
Have WENT AWAY for the WEEKEND!! I'd give him the Benefit of the DOUBT until at least TUES. NITE, before YOU Give Up on HIM!! BEST of LUCK, JMHO, Les Robinson.

I don't have a problem with that at all but I contacted them over seven days ago, not yesterday.

I have a SunSpot scoop that is about 20 years old. Still has same wooden handle that came with it. Never any trouble... KEN

Like all products they do evolve in time, adjustments have to made if there are issues and there will be when it comes to scoops or anything around saltwater, and sand. Perfect examples..CTX....

I know the Skullies have evolved, did 60+ sets last year. Ten came back, I learned from those, and changed the design.......I talked to Chuck at Sunspot this past fall and the same goes for his scoops, he said he learns from the ones that are returned and makes changes.
Ron is a good guy and did offer a replacement, I do think he should have offered shipping back if it was still under warranty?

One thing everyone here has to realize and the welder should have told you....

There is something called HAZ, if something cracks from stress it could be a design flaw or the heat affected zone. (HAZ) When you weld you weaken the metal around the welded area, rewelding will just weaken it more.

The welder said that the point where the handle attaches to the base has a lot of stress on it and the design should have been better.
If the welder recognized the area as an issue he should have offered beefing up the area?

Who ever told you JB Weld has to be lacking.

Good Luck, and I do hope you can get it worked out.....

The bottom line here is that it doesn't matter what any welder suggests, the scoop has a FLAW. It's obvious because the newer model now has a support in the same area in question. $169.00 for a scoop that broke within a couple of months of regular use is not worth that kind of money, atleast not to me. I invested $30.00 of my own money and probably another $40-50 to have it grinded down and some sort of a reinforced support added. No one bothered to contact me from T-Rex within a reasonable amount (seven days and counting) so of course I am a little upset, who wouldn't be? I am not bashing Golddigger because I really do think the T-Rex it's one of the finest scoops I've ever used. I guess that all I really wanted is a few suggestions of what would be the best approach to correctly fixing this issue so that it doesn't again anytime soon.

Ron has been on vacation in Florida for the past week. He posted it on his website. Try to contact him on Monday.

Ask your friend that welded your scoop if has Eutectic 680 tig wire. That will fix your scoop but Eutectic repair products are expensive. If he does not have any send me a PM and I will send you a piece. HH :minelab:

Is this the improved re-enforced bracket? Just bought this one last week.

Actually, no. You have to pay for it. The old faulty scoop like you and I have is still 169.00 if you want the new and improved one with the added support you'll have to pay more which I think is just plain wrong.

Like 2 3/16 rods angled off too back corners of basket. I may add that if yours has bent. This is my second go around with this style scoop.

I didn't know the older style was still available. I had zero problems with it, but it was a little too heavy for my old butt. I downsized to the 8" wet.

DatonaGold, would it not have been cheaper to have just shipped it back to T-Rex and have them fix or replace it? According to your first post, they did offer that. I really don't think it would have cost $70-$80 to ship it back to them and you would probably have already gotten it back by now.

Two more rods cost something plus the welder has to make 4 more welds...Time and Material all cost something.
I am sure that there is not much profit as is, even if WE think so. Improvements can and usually do cost something to somebody.

If your scoop broke because of a manufacturing defect, than it should be fixed free.

My thoughts only....

The cost to ship it back was ridiculous and I did not want to go without the scoop for weeks on end so I called them to see what other options there were. They suggested to get a local welder which would be quicker and cost about the same price as the shipping cost, a no brainer there. I did pay for the welding myself only because it was only 23.00 and I was ready to get back to detecting immediately (no down time).

Looking back I should have sent it back because that decision was the wrong one. I honestly think that they could have replied to my email either way, even if they told me that I couldn't return it because it was past the warranty I could live with that. Even if they were on vacation they should be professional enough to have an automated reply set up in their email stating so. I still have not had a reply from their company since and I will NEVER purchase or recommend their scoop, sorry but my experience has not been good at all. I'm going to another welder today, I hope this will be the last time.

Just so every one knows where your scoop will eventually break, just follow that little red arrow below.

Thank goodness I have access to tig welder at my work. In taking the proactive approach and bracing it with rods. This is my second time buying this style scoop and don't want the headache of shipping and waiting on a bent scoop.
