post office property

Besides the post office comes on my property six days a week

Because you allow them to, you're within your right to refuse them access and go rent a Post Office box to receive your mail

smitty, I never once said anything about going in someones yard to metal detect. We are talking about public property not private property. I do not pay taxes on anybody elses property, I do on goverment property. All I know is it is legal in my town to hunt city property. It is also legal to hunt county property I would not have any problem or concern hunting my local post office! Since I started metal detecting I have never had a problem anywhere I've hunted so I must be doing something right. The only thing people around my area has ever done is show interest as far as if I'm finding anything. Again this is on public property not private. most of the time when I ask about private property I get good results. As far as trespassing in Michigan it IS legal to retrieve wounded game or dogs on private property that is not posted. As far as that goes if I shoot a deer or other game I would go on posted property anyway before I would let it go to waist with or without permission! You have your views and some of us have a different view and I respect that. Thank you.

Calm down  I never said you did, I was merely making a point. People seem to have gotten the impression that just because a property is supported with taxpayer dollars, they have the right to use it as they please, and all I'm trying to say is this is not the case.

You also substantiated my point that States have different laws, which was also the point I was attempting to make. What if there were a young MD'er reading all this, and gets the idea that he can go wherever he wishes?

My views on this particular subject are in-line with the State laws, and ethics of the hobby, not simply thinking I have the "right" to use gov property as I see fit. Sounds as if you feel you have the right to MD the post office, so I'm not even sure why you'd posted here asking opinion? If you want to hunt it, hunt it. Just be prepared to face the consequences. Maybe they will be a simple request to leave, maybe a much more severe punishment. My gear, my money, and enjoyment of spending time outside of a cell is more valuable than $2 in clad and a couple wheat pennies

I think common sense and common courtesy in choosing the right place at the right time to hunt public property goes a long way here. Most times if you are not being an "in your face" nuisance while detecting you will be left alone. If people are watching you dig large deep holes, even if you carefuly cover them when finished, you are asking for trouble.

Marcomo is right...repeatedly being asked for permission to hunt "public property" only draws unwanted attention to metal detectorists. Eventually someone will question the wisdom of granting that permission for fear of lawsuits or property damage and a new law will be imposed preventing us from practicing our hobby on those public grounds.

Most of us try to draw little attention to what we are doing and leave no evidence behind that we were even on the property.....no holes, no divits, and no trash left behind.

great post wasp. There are a lot of public places where ....... so long as you're not in-your-face, or asking permission (as if permission were needed to begin with, when it's not specifically dis-allowed), then you're ok. Is that to say that you might not get a busy-body to object, if you "helped yourself"? No. Of course not. There's ALWAYS someone in this world that will "object" to anyone else's having fun. Does this mean you go "ask those person's permission"? No, you simply avoid them. This is why I hunt parks, schools, public places, etc.... at way-off-times. Ie.: not right at high-noon during peak park usage. I'll go at off-hours of the day (after 5pm, or quite frankly, in the dark of the night). Is this because I think I'm doing something wrong? No! It's because I don't want to run into busy-bodies. Ie.: sometimes the best way, is as you say: "don't draw un-wanted attention".

We're in an odd-hobby, that naturally draws lookie-lous and the curious. So why would we even want to engage busy-bodies in a conversation, to begin with? Just be discreet, to begin with, and "out-of-sight is out-of-mind". No one can gripe if they don't see you.

Right on spot Tom.

Sunday is a great time to detect at the school; not so much at the park. Monday morning is a great time to be at the park; not so much at the school.

Also, in public placees when people are around it might be a good idea to keep your digger out of sight and either cherry pick or mark the spots you want to dig and come back to them later. I carry popsicle sticks for just that purpose.

Just imagine someone coming up to you and asking permission to dig holes in your lawn or on a property for which you had resposibility. Your answer would most likely be "Oh hell no!" for a variety of reasons.
