plowed field

on-edge

New member
new here, just enlisted.has anyone else encounted this thought about plowed fields? i have 2 sites that i feel i have cleaned out pretty well over the course of a few years, even though the plow keeps bring up finds for me,they are far and few in between.and looking at some of the finds i"ve noticed that they are mostly of bigger sizes (large cents, colonial buttons, conn.copper, king georges, etc, etc, etc). these finds are plentiful seems like. now to me it seems more likely to loose a dime or half dime than a large cent or any coin of a bigger size, and i'm almost certain that these coins are there but have gone deep because of the plow and there small size and my detector just can't get them that deep,so what to do? i'm thinkin new detector! is there a machine that will get a dime or half dime at 12-16"? maybe these new p-i's coming out will be of help, any sugg. or ideas? sorry for long post.still trying to learn forum features, but i'll try to post a picture of what i am after thanks for listening hh!

not "breakin'" 'em,but have you considered the "possibility" that the farmers may have only had large cents and coppers to lose?..this is just a possibility as farmers 200 years ago were geneally poor, and didn't see much silver anyway, and what little they did have NEVER went out to the field in their pockets?..just a thought!

thanks for the reply to my post, thats very good reasoning and your probably right about the coin count there was i bet a lot more coppers flowing around than silvers thanks for bringing that to light.i should have specified in my post also that these particular sites are where fortifications where built,so its not so much the farmers im concerned with but you are right i find indian heads all over.the scan of the 1807 draped bust dime that i put in my post was from a fort 100' by 100' built in 1730 ish and from that same fort i have only picked up four silvers a1739 reale being the earliest and an1821 us mint dime being the latter,so im hoping with that 80yr span a few more silvers will come. thanks again hh!

hey on - edge, it seems youre doing quite well with what you have. sure, a new machine might be in the future. i buy a new machine about every two years. it keeps things fresh and keeps me current. i dont think youll ever get done with that field; every time its plowed, it churns the deep old stuff to the surface. i think youre onto something good, and sometimes it takes a new machine to take things to the next level. great finds though, jmaryt is right, coins were scarce back then, and lost a lot less often than people think. especially on a working farm. so now im supposing that a lot of what youve found came from soldiers or traders pockets. great job, would like to see some more pics of your finds, and good luck. hh,

thanks grey ghost, yea ithink it may be time for a new machine, although it's served me well its 11 plus years old think i'll have it revamped and save for backup.the plow does kinda keep it coming, but i'm just itchin to go deep to get the goodies on my own,its time consuming waiting for the plow,300 plus acres,of course i've narrowed it down to about 250' by 400' area though i have strayed out side this area and have made finds.i'll try to get more pictures going,i only have the scanner at the moment so quality won't be good. hh!

here are some more finds from the field, sorry took so long.the 1825 large cent is in the best shape that i have ever found, next is a 1818 large cent, then a1821 dime wich is in very rough shape its holed and the front is nearly obliterated,a1739 reale, and a peice of a reale.and this scanner hates me,i should redo these when i get a camera

yeah!..any silver is usually a sweet find!..i wouldn't mind just finding the largies too!..i am fascinated by the history of the people, and their coins!..in those days even the loss of a large cent was difficult to deal with!..best of luck in your most interesting quest!

hey on edge, im glad you posted your finds in the old field, even if the scanner doesnt like it. some sweeeet finds there, i know a lot of time and energy went into their discovery. i seem cursed with finding dateless large cents, 2 in a row, but that could change the minute the coil hits the ground this weekend. great job, and glad you posted. hh,

thanks grey ghost, seems to be a lot of hard working hunters out there, lots of good posts and finds here! i,m not to efficient at the forum thing,it's pretty much new to me,but eventually i think i'll get the swing of it.this curse you speak of i know well! have had alright luck with the US. large cents but i think i have a hand full of the BRITISH ones that i could barely even identify never mind getting a date off them,i think i may have gone half blind at times trying to see whats not there.i wish you the best of luck on your weekend hunt, and many more!!.......HH!!
