Please help with 1st time MD purchase - To F4 or Not to F4 ?

The x-Terra 70 would be a good choice for the coast there is high ground mineralization. Dan

I agree the x70 is a much better choice than the x50. There's too many mid range MD's that are as good or better than the x50. The 250 to name one.

Just my opinion.

Get yourself a good used Troy X5 thats what I hunt with often here on the coast its a gold magnet handles black sand easy to use light great machine. Dan

Cal, as a newbie you'd be hard put to find (for the price) another unit as
multi-featured as the F-4 for most of your needs in a detector. So I'd
suggest it as your best bet, for now at least.
It's not easy to find one detector that can do it all. For example, your
next best bet for about $200 more, would be the Tesoro Lobo ST, a
combination adjustable discriminator and gold prospecting unit, it's
main feature being it's very effective prospecting mode, that it was
primarily designed for. It also has automatic ground balance.

If you do get serious about prospecting, remember that ALL Gold bearing
soils are highly mineralized (ironized) in most areas of any country where
gold is found.
This means that the BEST mode of searching for nuggets or lodes
is in ALL METAL, preferably NON-Motion. Discrimination is not normally
used for gold hunting, as even minimal settings can reject gold. It can be
used sparingly for some ore testing.

For a VLF on salt beaches, the wet sand requires a manual GB, sensitivity
& disc. controls to compensate for the capacitance effect of
the wet salt..Plus, some beaches also contain black sand,
which adds iron influences. So you can see some of the requirements
for serious metal detecting. But for a newbie learning the ropes, the
F-4 is currently a great choice.
Good luck in all your decisions in this New Year and welcome to this
great hobby!

Hey cal..I'm like you a newbie, I just bought my wife the TITAN 2000 XD for christmas and with in 20 minutes of use she found
a 14K diamond cut necklace a pocket knife,a sterling silver cuff link all at 4" and within 10 feet of each other and it was in Iron reject mode, I found sever fishing lead weights and and a nice lure and a old horse shoe at 7"..I think it is a great grab and go and is just a little more than the Ace 250..If I was you I would get the F4 it comes with the 3 coils and suppose to have fast recovery speeds..I to was looking for me a new Md so I would'nt keep borrowing my wifes after lots of research and lots of begging her.. I should be getting the Fisher F75 next week..It will be a big learning curve over the TITAN..I live in NC so the ground is mineralized..Post up on what you get..Its inless, I have;nt slept in 4 days researching for a good detector..lots of good ones out there..

I would think the Tesoro Tejon well out performs the F75 at less cost. But for those without quality headphones and the experienced ear to hear good targets, the F75 might be a better choice.

Here's one owner's testimony:

i'm not going to say the others detectors are junk because they all have their strong and weak points. i will say that for me i have never owned a detector that went as deep as the tejon, and was as easy to use. for being a beep detector they can tell you so much about your target. the best detector in the world is between your ears. and tesoro gives you the information to make the decision. i have other brands TID detectors, but i dont think they give as much information as the tesoro does. they have a language all their own and once you learn it, in my opinion there is none better.
There are some who don't get it. They need TID's as an aid. If we were all the same then there would be only one detector. Thank goodness I can spend all this money in the pursuit of what's right for me:blink:

Something like that anyway,:blink:I Don't know.

I went through this and it's a difficult decision to make.

I found a groove I like. It's not for everybody. It works for me.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I'm on the fence between the MXT and the Coinstrike, they both look to be very capable units, I tend to believe the C$ is a bit more powerful, but with a much higher learning curve....decisions, decisions, decisions

Cal

Call Kellyco and ask for JW he will give you info on the diferent options for your budget..and is a straight shooter..Its a tuff decision with so many good
detectors out there..good luck..

I wanted to thank everyone for their opinions and input. After reading everything I could find online (user reviews, field reports, forums, etc.), and getting valuable input from users of the various models that caught my interest, I decided to go with the Coin $trike. No doubt it's a lot of detector for a noob, but I really wanted something I could grow into, not out of, and I believe it will cover all of my interests well.

Thanks again,
Cal

PS - I can't wait to start swinging and digging :bouncy:

Congrats on the coinstrike I been hearing good things about it..Looks like we Both got a New machine in 08, My F75 just showed up..This is one great looking machine..good luck..
