I live in Naples ,Fl. and we have a few guy here that will find out where a ring has been lost , They will go out and find it ,and the bad part is they know who own the ring and won't return it .We call it Grand Theift. It make people like me (Ron Lords metal Detector service I am Licensed),look bad. I do work for the beach potrol, fire dept.and Law enforcement for free. For Digger out there (you know who you are ) that do things like this and make it bad for everyone else. Some Day everyone is going too have a License just to hunt or their won't be no more treasure huntters .And this is my two cents on this, Ron Lord

Hi Folks; To sum up srf2112's and junklords posts. I think having a license would be a Capitol (pun) idea. That way you woud be required to "know" the RULES and ETHICS of being a true Treasure Hunter. We could design the license to require passing a simple test on these rules and ethics and if they are caught in the field breaking the laws like those idiots did. Then these morons would have no excuses at all, have their license stripped and be prosecuted at the same time for either grand theft or malicious destruction of property or some other crime like that.Kind of like your drivers license;.You "know" the rules of the road.If you break them you pay the penalties. I believe that no self respecting treasure hunter would mind showing the local Constabulary their license because I know we are upright people. What do you guys think??? I await your replies "as the plot thickens." :ninja: PEACE:RONB :yo:

The only thing government is good at is making more government. Let them get their own house in order and perhaps stop printing money like it was paper. (oh wait, it is only paper and toilet paper at that) Government never makes things better, just worse - especially when it comes to something as decent and wholesome as LOOTING a beach.:bouncy:

Hi bda; I agree with your distaste for Government but I think we need to do "something". I'm open to ideas.i think a license of some sort coud be handled at the local levels and wuld solve the idiot problems once and for all. I need to sleep now but I'm open for suggestions. PEACE:RONB :goodnight:

where I live, Charleston, SC, decided in the early 80's that metal detecting on city property is illegal. bdahunter is right in his idea that leaving the government out of it is a good idea. And that is at any level of government, imo. There may be exceptions but any government body, local, state or federal would probably decide that a blanket outlaw would be better than spending time regulating and licensing something like what we do. And if they did decide to allow it they would impose restrictions and rules that I probably wouldn't want to abide by. Probably most of the old timers wouldn't. Live it while you can because one day it will be gone. --Jerry

You're right on the money, Jerry. Carpe Diem, for tomorrow it may be legislated out of existence. Why some people think that government is full of ultra-clever types is beyond me. A trip to any government agency will quickly make it clear that most of these folks don't have a clue half of the time and the big money, lobby backed politicians certainly aren't leading from the front.
As a popular T-shirt state "There Ain't No Cure For Stupid". Lets leave the nice government men out of the equation because experience has taught me that those boys couldn't organize a piss up in a brewery.

Hi Folks; Like I said. I'm open to ideas. Do you guys have any ideas to solve the idiot problem??????? PEACE:RONB

Hmmmm? The longer and less important this post becomes, the more ideas on solving the 'idiot problem' come to mind. A long walk on a short pier is one solution that springs to mind.:poke:

There really isn't much that we can do to police the problem other than a friendly (or not so friendly) chat when we see someone doing the stupid things that will affect us all. Going to the police or any other government official will only speed up the inevitable. Trust me when I tell you to live it now. Not something anyone wants to hear for sure but that's the way I see it. You see, one of the problems, and perhaps the biggest problem of all for us, is that the feds, state and local governments actually think we are stealing from them when we take something out of the ground. The only place where we can evade them is on private property but that's almost a no go unless you own the property. Property owners are much more reluctant to allow hunting on their land than they used to be. Nowhere has this been more evident than in relic hunting. That's one of the reasons relic hunters are so secretive. But the beaches are heading in the same direction. The clock is ticking so hit it while you can. I guess saying "have a nice day" after a post like this is kind of silly but have a nice day. --Jerry

Human nature can be a terrible thing, greed can turn people into ignorant animals. I'm a long time detector operator, having done search and recovery on land and in the surf as well as scuba. I tried unsucessfully to recover an expensive gold ring for a couple in a marina, almost becoming supper for a 12ft Tiger shark in the process. I went out of my way doing 3 trips, wasting about $60 in fuel, plus tank fills, and my time and energy. I DID NOT charge a cent for the service because I only worked on 10% commission upon recovery of items when hired to do so. I have returned both valuables and non valuables whenever and wherever possible even when simply doing it in hobby mode for no profit. As a man sows so shall he reap, and they will reap their just reward!

Hi Folks; I've got the picture. Thanks. I have returned many things as well.It just gauls me that these idiots are in effect getting away wth it. Anyway, thanks for the input. Onto next topic. PEACE: RONB :surrender:

There were no detectorist found doing anything wrong on that beach...The Newburyport police reported this to me!!....offers were made to the home owners to help find any lost items....reporters made false statements and left out parts of a interview with a guy detecting.....no detecorist ever crossed the guarded taped off ares...reporters did!! the police had more issues with reporters climbing on the collapsing dunes causing unsafe situations...The news station that made the false story was flooded with calls and emails to retract the false statements....no one was arrested....no court orders to stop detecting...the beach is still open!! a fellow detectorist who lives a couple blocks from the house in question hunts everyday...hes retired..I have been going to these beaches for 30 years...I know people who live there...I visit there all the time with my daughter collecting shells...sometimes detect...fish for stripers....These false stories about this are what is giving us a bad name!! Ron your Friend James detects this area from time to time!! I was with him this fall detecting there....the internet is a dangerous thing...people can post anything and it spreads like a virus!! If you care so much about this hobby be more careful about what you post! I was there...I spoke to the police...and neighbors....what you heard is 100% FALSE! Sorry to come down on you but I could not let this go on...it hurts us all!

Great post BEACH HUNTER. Whatever happens in the future, there's one thing for sure, you could not pass enough legislature to help eliminate the stupid slobs. Just check out the trash along our hi-ways and on our beaches etc. Five hundred dollar fine $1,000 $5,000 $10,000. The people that do that sort of thing probably can't read or could care less. I think that the best we could do would be to try and educate people doing dumb things when metal detecting. Good luck with that though.

Some people would just rather hear an exciting lie then accept the boring truth. I can usually tell when those talking media heads are lying - their lips are moving.

Hi Folks; I just read the prior posts.I have been off line due to serious health issues.Having surgery this Friday. I could not respond before now. Now, First
I stated what I believed to be 100% true and have believed it to be true all along. That is why I posted as I did. I heard from James B just yesterday who informed me of the real story on what happened and the retractions made. I talk to James B quite frequently. Second, I don't know who to be more pissed at. I NEVER head the retractions from either the tv media or the newspaper due the fact that I was in the hospital when they did retract it.The last thing I have "EVER" intended to do is cause anyone any problems. I stated what I believed to be true and how I felt about it.yes I am "ALL" about this hobby - sport and have been for 39 years now. When I brought up the subject of Governmental Regulation I did so with a pure heart and intended it to be a simple topic for open discussion.I even stated that I was open to suggestions, ideas etc.. bda said it for me; I will "NEVER" trust anyone or anything I hear until I check it out first.I'm so ticked over this right now it is not funny.:rage: :rant:Anyway I want to take this opportunity to apologize to guys over this.I did and still do appreciate your input regarding this debacle. It is with all this said that I hope I have cleared my own name and rep.. I wish you guys good hunting.I'd like to kill myself some reporters but thats illegal. Strange ain't it. PEACE:RONB
