If he is saying that he only gets a hit side to side it could be he usig a DD coil and not going far enough for the target to pass the edge of the coil..
The FF is hot along the very centerline of the coil.when swung side to side.
Only swing the coil for and aft to try and determine where the signal falls off. Which is usually at the tip of the coild. and the back of the coil.
Do not use the reference north and south for swing the coil because unless your facing due east or west you would be swinging some other direction
