Platinum - white gold question

kregh

New member
My Cibloa can only detect white gold discrim set at zero, it will not detect it with a side to side swing - only back and forth swings and discrims out just above iron.

Regular gold detects just fine..

I thought this a bit odd - maybe my grandmothers ring isnt really platinum? All though with 3 diamonds - you would think it would be..

What do you all think?

Wow.. next time I'll use the spell checker... anyway.. as a point of clarification - when I stated "back and forth" swing above - I meant to say the swing was north and south - as opposed to east and west.

Platinum rings are low in the disc range. The photo shows the ID range the platinum rings on each side of the gold class ring are in. The platinum ring at left in the photo is medium size, the one at right is huge. The smaller ring ID"s the same as the old pull off steel bottle caps, the large ring just barely higher. The large boys class ring is for size reference.

Thanks for confirming my reads. Who would have thought white gold was so low on the spectrum? certainly not me. That's what I love about this hobby - learn something new everyday.

I guess this just goes to show that those that dig everything reap greater rewards...

Platinum and white gold are two very different metals. The biggest differences between platinum and white gold are that platinum is a naturally white metal and is more dense and durable.

They are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT metals! What I didn't know was that they ever made a WHOLE ring out of platinum! I thought some of the better gold rings sometimes added some platinum to it for extra details.

I know on my detectors white gold and yellow gold disc about the same, for the most part the size of the ring makes the difference as to where it comes in on disc settings. Now my wife and my wedding rings are white gold and my wife has some other yellow gold that I use often for testing. I have never had a chance to get hold of a platinum ring for testing, so you may have got hold of one and that may make a difference. You may want to check and see if there is any markings inside that ring that you could look up and ID the material.

Good luck with your mystery,

Size and what the white gold is alloyed with might make a difference.
This is white gold with 9 diamonds...my greatest find ever.

On my F2, 33 is usually a nickel...32 could be, but most of the time a 32 is some sort of can slaw or a piece of a tab.
This was a solid 32.

I have no clue what your saying ????
1-size matters...
if you swing north south or east west should make no difference...
white hold should be more conductive than gold.
and platium should be less coductive than both.
so are you talking a small white gold item ??
or are you talking about a larhe items ?

Size and what the white gold is alloyed with might make a difference. REVIER's quote

I don't see the problem, the way I read it is he says size matters and also what white white gold is alloyed (mixed) with matters or makes a difference.

I was referring to the op's original post sorry...

Hey Jim -

For claification - when I swing east and west - I get nothing - absolute zero tones. This is with my Cibola - zero discrimination - sensitivty on 8.

When I swing north and south - it sounds off every time on Platinum.

Yeah - its wierd - the direction of the swing shouldn't matter - but it does in my case - I just thought it was odd. I should also note that I have only seen this issue with platinum.

I was hoping someone could explain it...

So you are saying that if you face north or south and swing side to side you get no response on targets ???

I think what he's saying is when he swings over the white gold from side to side, left and right, (East & West) it don't hit on it.

But, if he swings over the same target heel to toe, forward and backwards (North & South) it hits on it.

Just wanted to share my weekend experience with white gold right quick. I don't currently own a Tesoro but I hang out here more often than most other forums as I am fond of the Tesoro machines. Sometimes we can't afford to get a machine for the time being but it doesn't mean we aren't particular to a certain brand; that's where I am at the moment.

I visited my folks this weekend and got out to detect for some bullet cases that I knew where in an area where my dad and brother often shoot. My brother just started reloading and you don't always find every casing. My mother mentions she lost an earring a couple of weeks ago so I agree to look for it. She has two sets of the same white gold earrings and was currently wearing the spare set so I ask her to take one off so I can scan it to see where it rings up on the AT Pro. The AT couldn't pick it up unless I practically scrubbed the coil against it! It was a horseshoe shape, about as wide in diameter as your thumbnail with a wire this clasp to go through the ear that would snap into the opposite side and about 3mm thick. I ran the machine with no discrimination and max sensitivy, no rejections. When I would close the clasp and hold it together then I would get a jumpy low foil signal.

I was very disappointed my machine wouldn't pick it up well enough to hunt for it and sad to tell my mom that I would not be able to find it with my detector much less even look for it:confused: I bet a Compadre would have been able to pick it up no problem but I don't have one right now, well not yet anyway. When I get one I'll be sure to check for it then but just wanted to share my recent experience with white gold. Also makes me wonder what I am missing with my current detector!

About the north-south - east-west thing....and this is just something to consider. My cibola (as do many of my Tesoros) have a 9"x8" concentric coil as the standard coil. If you were using this coil, it may be possible that, being a slightly eliptical coil, it is very slightly more sensitive swinging in one direction to the other. Just throwing it in for something to ponder. HH

Habanero - I had the same experience with my ACE 350 - wouldn't detect it the ring unless I was on top of it..

Hey that is very interesting. Maybe you are on to something.
