You definitely need a hunting partner. Alone you are asking for trouble. There in Louisiana I'd be concerned about stepping on a snake without using a good light, and when using a light you're gonna attract attention of the two-legged predators. Just be careful.
 
I use a flashlight that straps to your head works good and lights up everything you look at. Just started my self at night. Love it plus to busy during the day to find time. Good luck.
 
I did a night hunt tonight.Take bug spray.I had a small flashlight,AA, that helped with target retrieval.I've never had anyone bother me while night hunting.
