Planning on Night Hunts with MXT-Pro. :sleepy: Advice and Tips ??

Due to the heat and work schedule, I am planning on some night hunts at the local ball fields and parks with my MXT Pro. I am sure that the new backlight will help. I'm looking for tips, advice, do's and dont's, lessons learned, lighting equipment used etc etc. I've never MDted at night before so looking forward hearing your input and suggestions if any. THANKS so much and HH. CCH

Hey CCH. I've had the same idea lately. I've also been detecting some new spots by day, (playgrounds, parks, etc) and have noticed they all close at dusk. Around here I would be busted for just being in the park after dark. Just a heads up. Good luck and Happy Hunting! Matt

Watch out for things that go "Bump" in the night EJ.

Parks around here have a closing time. Usually 9:00 pm. If it is legal to hunt at night where you live, I believe I would stop by the local police station and tell them where and when you will be operating lest they think a drug deal is going down and your hunt is interrupted by flashing lights and drawn guns.

Make sure you have permission. Use red or green lights for target recovery. Or the one on your pinpointer. Use bug spray. Use your lights very little as to not attract attention. Take a buddy if you can. Do not walk around with a headlamp on while you hunt. Other than bugs in your eyes you might attract some thugs. Private property is different.

LOL Larry - :lmfao:

Everyone, I'm serious about this.... really. I've read (on another website) about MDting get togethers for NIGHT hunts and doing pretty well. I've never attempted it but am willing to give it a shot. :detecting:

The parks here usually don't close until around 2am. Some parks dont "officially" close. Example - Some groups have large softball tournaments 24 hrs / around the clock. Police wont be a problem. Thugs wont be a problem as I always go with another person and my Glock .40 is really really close by.

Just curious and I really LOVE this website.... :please:

Thanks...... CCH

I'm serious too. Watch you back night hunting in public! Better yet - have a buddy hunt with you so you can watch each others back...

Keep a heads up for two legged predators.

Something tells me you are going to do just fine EJ. Not much difference in night and day hunting, you will just need a light to help dig your target with, like the ones that strap to your head works great. Some skeeter repellent is a good idea too.

Good luck and keep us posted with your finds and stories.

These (2) videos were suggested to me on youtube and i thought they were pretty good: cut n paste subject to search -

Gee Fred, I don't know what to say......there for a while I thought you were talking about Larry till I read about the "big gold coin hanging from his neck". Whew..........  Good to hear from you! HH, Nancy

Larry, Nancy & Fred,

I'm sure that there is more to this story than I am yet privledged to. LOL . :ranting: Anyway, thanks for all the responses up to this point. I look forward to posting finds from my first NIGHT HUNT ! :sleepy: Gotta love this hobby ! CCH

i gotta think that a group hunt can be done in most parks. parties take planning. here i think just calling the parks dept. and get someone to e-mail an okay then calling the leo's
and have your hunt. i don't hear worm pickers being bothered by the law. cops usaully will watch you to see what they may be gitting into. they see you're just detecting you should be okay. alittle effort will prevent a lot of problems and make your hunt ejoyable. have a great time. hh

I have hunted school parks and village ballfields at night...If there is a posted sign saying park closes at dark, I would get permission in writing first...Get yourself a can of Mace...DO use a good headlamp...I have had state troopers and sherif's deputies ask what I was up to, but once they have sen you and see that your not causing trouble, they usually leave you alone...Just use your head and common sense, and wear cheap lightweight headphones so your detector cannot be heard, and also so you can hear around you...your senses are much stronger in the dark, and sounds, smells, and what you see can all play tricks on you at first until you get used to it. If your not in a lighted area, it is best to go hunting with a buddy or two...And don't forget the bug spray...Also, just because your hunting at night with noone around, does not mean you can disregauard the ethics code...fill your holes and dig properly...carry out all trash...Remember the dawn comes and people see what you have done if your sloppy...

HH,

My working late has forced me to do quit a bit of night hunting. Once you are set up right, retrieval times are as fast as a day hunt and it seems to really help because of less distraction and learning goes smoother too. I live in a small town and it's safe to the extreme. If I was in an area that had thug kids or transients, hunt with a bud for sure.

Best headlamps I've found are the smaller single hat clip w/5 LED's. They have a lot of light and so small they can be stored anywhere. Mounting an LED on your pod is a must do thing too. There are all kinds of them out there but the the ones that work best, keep a concentrated beam right on your coil and are the headband type that can either flip up or down. (The ones that flip down tend to have the beam angle right without flipping it.) With these, just cut off or remove the headband straps and sticky back Velcro tabs to attach to the back of your pod. The light on your pinpointer is a nice bonus.

Hunting at night can be one of the most peaceful ways to enjoy the hobby and with that, smoother learning and "tuning in" like you just can't do in the daytime. (Targets just talk to you clearer.) Like Gopher said....take advantage of your heightened senses to stay attuned to your surroundings and enjoy.
