Planning a trip round the Mediterranean, any good spots?

Water wizard

New member
Hi guys, I am thinking of doing a trip round the med detecting in a van next year, and I am just starting to plan a rough route. Can anyone please suggest any beaches that are good for wading, where they have had good results? If anyone has good tips or advice about local spots, parking up, places to hang out etc I would be very grateful.
I am starting out from devon, driving to France, and down to the med. I will do regular updates from the trip, posting finds and stories from along the way, so it should make intresting reading. Cheers for now, water wizard

Man! That's the life! I've often wondered how the beaches in those little waterfront vacation spots in Croatia would be, east of Italy a little ways, wonder if anyone hits them? I was there for business a long time ago before I was a detectorist, and enjoyed talking to the fishermen that would go out in homemade wooden boats. Even though I don't speak Croatian, and they did not speak English, we could communicate just fine in the language of boats! There were these big industrial looking resorts if you could call them that, where the Russians would go on holiday..I'm sure the French, Spanish, and Italian beaches would be better targets for big gold eh? That's a trip that will take substantial planning to hit the right rich spots at just the right time of year, and move on...sort of hope someday I'll find some Shangri-La resort someplace and become the maintenance man, live in the boilerroom, and sweep that beach every night! Theres a fellow named "Crack badger" that posted a bunch of youtube videos of his adventures ransacking resorts all over the globe! You should watch those! Man! I'm excited for you WW!

Hey thanks mud, If it comes together it will be awesome, I've found a decent amount of gold this winter around the med, If I could do a few months who knows what I might find:) you can always come over for part of the trip, I prefer detecting with someone :)

Sounds like a great trip and I wish you good luck and good hunting. There was an island I read about in a magazine that had lot's of beaches and foreign tourists called Ibiza, Spain. But, I don't think you can drive to it. I always wanted to go there and metal detect in Holland. Have fun and post your finds.

Hey Water Wizard, Try to check out if detecting is allowed. I know Spanish, French and Italian beaches are allowed and hunted frequently. I'm not sure whether detecting on touristic beaches is allowed in Turkey,Greece, Croatia, Albania and the Southern Med. I know for Greece that detecting inland is forbidden. The beaches are often designated as archaeological sites. The least you want is for some local official (sometimes hard to identify) to confiscate your detector based on some obscure reason or due to some misunderstanding. In some countries in the Middle-East the possession and import of a metal detector is also forbidden. So, do some homework before you plan but have fun. Kossie.

Thanks Kossie, I will be careful about the law, it is illegal in Spain, but there are normally cool, I'm just trying to get any good spots mapped out to plan a route. I don't know about Ibiza, I'll check that out thanks Fongu. Anyone know any good spots?

Thats a great plan.............keep us informed.......video.....

Yeah that's a great idea OBN. I will do regular video updates as I go round..... Hope there's some decent finds long the way....thank you :)

I sent somebody an email several years ago about Ibiza to the tourist people and I may be spelling it wrong, but they said it was okay to metal detect on the beaches. But, in the mountains the antiquities laws were enforced. My hard drive crashed and I don't have any of that information anymore. That's what happens when you don't back up your stuff. Good luck with your tour.

I envy you. If I were in a weeee bit better health
and making a weeee bit more on my social security,
I'd get an old van and NEVER come back. I keep seeing
all this wonderful stuff they are digging up in England
and that brings out the "digger" in me. I spent two month
when I was younger back in 89 traveling up and down
the coast of Turkey just kicking back. I knew NOTHING
about detectors then. Now days being in Turkey ain't
all that safe. If I were taken hostage I don't knbow a soul
who would buy back my sorry backside!:)-)

Hi robert2300, You are still living the dream! Keep detecting and post your finds, I'll do a running series of posts, you can check 'em out and give me advice and still be a part of the trip! Your health will get better, just keep detecting, fresh air is the best :) i will be starting in november I think. good luck mate I

I'd hit the beaches at Nice & Cannes France, also Monaco. That is where the ultra wealthy flock to tan, drink, and uhhh...well you know.
Good luck, hope you score big ice.

Jeff

detected in Spain a lot, never had any problems. BUT I'd avoid detecting between swimmers during day hours and I would completely avoid Andalusia province.

Hey thanks jeff, I was looking at maps last night and I thought about that area! The beach's looked packed, but I couldn't tell if It was any good for wading. You ever been round there? Thanks for your advice, keep it coming, just working it all out now, cheers WW
