pinpointer yes or no!!

Hello all,

Was just wondering what views others have on getting a pinpointer or not,and what brand to get and what to stay away from,if it realy speeds up recovery time.

thx

Sun Ray DX1 probe is hands down the best pinpointer on the market. Expensive Yes but worth every penny. Its like having another detector along for the hunt. It definitley speeds up recoveries. JMHO Dennis in Idaho

For the past two years I've used the Whites pinpointer which will give about 1.5 to 2 inches on big targets.
It's very sensitive and will detect small targets such as BB shots thumbtacks ,and 22 bullets plus any small ferrous and non ferrous items .
The first pinpointer had trouble with sent it back and received new one quickly and no cost. Thank you Whites from a Happy Customer.
I'm thinking of buying the Pro Pointer as a extra one for any one coming to detect with me and as a spare.
That definitely speeds up your recovery using one of those piinponter and money well spent.

im getting my pro pointer today, i will use it sat at the club hunt, will let you know how i like it. have herd good things about it

With your gain turned up, you should be able to get 4 inches in depth, (or more) with the DX-1 and since it is a one inch coil attached to your MXT, you will get the VDI reading on your target as well. Since the DX-1 is attached to your MXT, there is no walking off and leaving it on the ground "somewhere" either. For more info click on the SunRay banner at the top of the page.

hey arent you suppose to be at the camp lol

Hi Bryan, we will be a little late getting there. Our dog has "issues" and the vet can't see him until 4PM. We will be there though and I will be there in about an hour to bring the camper out and then come back to see the vet.

sorry to hear that, good luck with the vet. i should be there around 530, hope the weather is good its really cloudy here. see you there

DX-1 the best pinponter out there....................

I have both the old and new version of White's Bullseyes, and they worked fairly well, but average about 1 to 1 1/2 inch on coins. When I bought my MXT, I should have ordered the DX-1, but since I originally intended to use the IDX more than I actually do, went for the handheld Garret Pro-Pointer so I could share with both.

Not knocking the White's, they do okay. The Pro-Pointer is just much better in my books; quality of construction, it's 2-3+ inch range on coins, Self adjustiing, Splashproof, Ergonomics.

So, my hindsight choices now, would be 1. DX-1, 2. Propointer There are other ones out there, but will let those that have owned them comment.

These are my choices for my style of hunting. As for helping in the retrieval process, definitely. I use the pinpointer to tell me if the target is within 2-3 inches of the surface, if yes, popping time, if no, plug time. It has all but eliminated the aggravating search for that 5" deep target that I dug a plug for, that ended up being a tiny bb, piece of foil, or pencil end, near the surface which the pinpointer found when I scanned the ground first with it.

hello Ralph,

I am from alberta aswell...would like to hear what kind of vdi readings you get on the mxt with loonies and toonies...i dug a loonie the other day ,before we got this dam snow and it was all over jumping from lo 70's to 80's:shrug:

To answer your basic question as to whether a pinpointer is helpful - ABSOLUTELY. They speed recovery up considerably when trying to find small pieces or coins etc. that have taken on the color of the soil they are in. The DX-! is great on my MXT. If it works with the type of detector you are using, you can't beat it in my opinnion. You can't forget and leave it behind and it gives the same options as your regular coil. I've used the White's, a Merlin, and several others as well and find them helpful, but a little under powered for my preference. I'm anxious to try the Garret Pro-Pointer. If it's as good as I hear, I'll probably be buying one to use with my other detectors.
My two cents.
Keep diggin'

I now make two of them part of my regular equipment.

For some, yes, it can. I learned early in my detecting days to pinpoint a target rather quickly and also make recovery in a timely manner, and while I have owned or used almost every pinpointer that's come along, I'm never been compelled to keep one in my arsenal.

With that said, let me add that I was also much younger, healthier, and not so stoved-up as I am not. Also, I have to admit that the bulk of the sites I have preferred to hunt have been old town sites, homesteads, pioneer-era recreation sites and encampment sites, and urban renovation work. So, old, out-of-the-way places have held most coins rather shallow and easily retrieved, and in the urban site's I've let those paid to do the digging ... do the digging. :)

So, today I've settled in one two Pinpointing devices that serve my needs the most. i don't always need/use them, but when I am having some difficulty, it is nice to have a very efficient pinpointer on hand.

I have had good success with the Treasure mate and the various Vibra Probe models, but, for me, there are just two that I have settled on.

One is the SunRay in-line probe. The strengths are in the excellent depth of detection, and the fact that you hear everything in your headphones. The drawback, for me, is the added weight, and sometimes a little hang-up issue when working brushier locations.

The other is the best-feeling hand-held pinpointer I've ever used, that is rugged, yet compact. Provides some of the best depth and responsiveness for a unit its size, and I can both hear and feel the pinpointer work. It's always on my detecting belt with my finds pouch and Lesche digger. It's the Garrett ProPointer.

Naturally, your questions are drawing personal opinions, and you just got mine. :) FREE, TOO!!

I just ordered a DX-1 today and can't wait for it to get here. I have a Whites 140mm and love the way it helps. I recover twice as fast as my Md'n partner.
I'm thinking that the DX-1 will be all the better and my partner will get to use my 140.
If you don't have a pin pointer you will be spending your time waving the plugs over your coil to find the dark coin.
What ever you chose you will be glad you have it.

The DX-1 sounds like the deepest on the market as a pinpointer..
The only problem is that I use throughout the summer on top of my MXT three other detectors so I've chosen hand held unit .
Once I find that big cache I'll get a DX-1 for the lot of them:thumbup:

VibraProbe, Pocket UniProbe, TreasureMate, and Garret ProPointer, Sunray Probe mounted on explorer-2.
Not to mention some others.
So - Yes.

Well i would like to thank everyone for there opinions,,i see many are very close as to whats best and that makes it easy...i think i may try a hand held probe like the garret or go with the sunray probe,,,,well i better start saveing them pennys i been finding lol:detecting::whites:

Thanks for the input Monte
