PINPOINTER OPINIONS??

I'm ready for pinpointer number 4.My first three look like they have been in a war zone. The way I hunt is with my detector in my right hand and a pinpointer and trowel in my left.My first,an automax from kellyco, finally quit vibrating(wore the little motor out)and has a piece pvc holding the tip on.I always considered it to be large and bulky anyway. The second,a CP-200, looked like a good ideal(discriminates iron)until I realized it required constant adjustment and had to practically touch the target(ifnot touching and if not readjusted not even then!)gets very little use.The third,a bullseye, within a year had to have the pushbutton switch repaired and the screw holding the pointer modified(screw pulled through case-replaced with larger screw and nut) finally had the pointer break inside the case.I'm considering either a vibramax or a propointer.vibramax has some complaints of it interferring with the detector and no on/off switch but does only detect from the tip(big plus)and is very durable. The propointer has high reveiws but would react to my trowel(auto shutoff?)and detects from the first half of the shaft. My other consideration is to go to harber freight and 3 or 4 of their $15 units and just throw them away as they wear out.Surely, for what these things cost, someone makes one worth having!Opinions please.DBULL

I use a automax V4 and V2 and never had any problems with them, yes alittle bulky but it's not a problem for me. If I had to get another pinpointer it would be the Automax, but thats just my thoughts on pinpointers---------if it works for you use it

If you're goin thru pinpointers fast, get some from harbor freight. I think they cost around 15 or so dollars. Guys I know that have them say they work pretty good.

The best hand help pinpointer is the Garrett Propointer. It's built like a tank. Perfect size. Auto adjusting. LED light. Vibrates. Well worth the money.

Get a Garrett Pro-Pointer....no knobs to fiddle with and wear out. It's just a turn on and go with automatic tuning, and doesn't interfere with my metal detectors either.

Here's some more information on it:

I'd recommend the Garrett Propointer as well.

It works great, it's built solid and it's simple to use.

Garrett...me too! I love it. Had I gotten it before I got my X-1, I'd only have one now and not two. A couple times today, when digging deep, I laid the X-1 to the side and used the Garrett. It helped me locate the target in the side of the hole more accurately. Jim

Get the Pro-Pointer, well made, handy and works great. I have had 5 pinpointers and it is the best one, at least for me.

go for the pro pointer, used it for the first time today, absolutely brilliant:garrett:: :please:, how i managed without it before is beyond me, oh by the way the wife is talking to me now........:inlove:

Agreed... I'm on my second one in a year. Paint some epoxy on the end to make the probe portion water proof. It has a sens knob and LED. It gets 2" - 2.5" on a coin sized object. At $15 each ... you can't beat it.

BTW... you're supposed to dig with something other than your pinpointer :)

I really like my Garrett Pro Pointer. i was using it today and locating the targets prior to digging. It really made my holes very small. I had a Vibraprobe but really played havoc with my Minelab. The Propointer does not interfere at all. Soild and easy to use, Beale.

I see lots of recommendation for the Pro Pointer - something I haven't tried yet.
I have the Sun Ray probe on a couple machines, but for the ones that don't have it, Uni-Probe, VibaProbe & Treasure Mate have been my choice lately.

I'm a little surprised that there isn't mention of the PiratePROBE. I have had one since they first came out and have mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, I really like the depth. I can pinpoint a target precisely enough to readily pop it out or open only a very small hole if necessary.

On the other, I dislike the size, the shape (especially in a park or schoolyard), and that it is sensitive halfway up the shaft with a radius of around 2 inches or so which can make pinpointing in the hole frustrating.

Maybe some quality control issues with the Cen-Tech from Harbor Freight?

Or maybe I just got a dud.

Because I sure never got 2" - 2.5" on coin sized objects when I used one.

That made me run out in my cold arse garage and try the two I have. Both were a little over 2" on a quarter. I just turn the sens knob just past where it stops continuous beeping and voila.

wow! you must really abuse your pinpointers! I am still using the first pinpointer I bought back in 1999. The old black, boxy white's bullseye. Yeah, the rubber switch cover tore off, but I replaced it with a small toggle switch. I also replaced the green "on" LED with a white one to aid in seeing in the hole. I also added a belt clip (ftoman old reftractable tape measure) so I could carry it on my belt easily.

I am so used to it that I really dont use any others (even though I own the automax, vibraprobe & a new model bullseye pinpointer).

Note: I HATE the automax pinpointer. It was thrown in with a slightly metal detector I bought.

I have never had a better one than the in-line Sun Ray X-1 that I use with my SE. It has saved me a lot of time with recoveries and I rarely do any damage to them. I really only ever use my Minelab (I have a few detectors) so the fact that it's model dedicated is a non-issue. If I do use one of the other detectors, I use my White's Bullseye II and have been pleased with it. I also own a Merlin and a Vibraprobe but don't use them very often.
