Pin pointer

Thinking of buying a pin pointer. What is the best one on the market today?

In-line (if available for your detector), the SunRay Probe.

Merry Christmas.

Id say the Sun Ray inline.... if there is one for you detector. Good depth, you can switch off the main coil so you dont get EMI like a hand held, you get normal tones and TID, you dont have to find a place to put them since they are attached, you dont put them down and loose them, and they are water proof and made durable. Down side.. little more weight to carry, sometimes pinpointing the target takes practice, if you are in pinpoint and switch coils.... you get a blast of noise, you have to remember to switch back to the standard coil... or you might detect a good while before you remember it, you have to remember if you are using disc that targets disappear once you remove dirt on deep targets that might have been disc out, and lastly ..... cost. Garrett makes a good hand held as does detector pro if you decide to go that route. They both get great depth.. create EMI so you may have to move your detector, and i dont know about you, but i tend to leave things like digging tools and hand helds. Sometimes you find them sometimes you dont. They let you know something is in the hole... you just dont know what until you dig it. I like the Inline because a lot of those targets close to the surface that it tells me are coins i can just pop out. Deep ones, dig a few inches and i can tell another 3 inches down what i have without digging a bigger hole. Cant do that with handhelds .... you have to dig the target.

I was thinking maybe the detector pro pistol probe. Has anyone tried it?

I had one and sold it.
it interfered with my machine. You won't be sorry if you get a Sun-Ray. Handhelds have no discrimination. The main thing is to get what YOU want. HH :minelab:

One other factor to think about is weight. I just bought a new detector in spite of liking the one I have been using a lot but it is just too heavy for me to swing. An in line probe is going to add some additional weight. May not be a problem for you, just pointing it out.

I use the pistol probe and it is very sensitive. It will set off the detector on occasion, usually in areas where EMI seems to be higher, but I always have the headphones off when I'm pinpointing and digging a target so it's not an issue for me.

Thanks for all the info. I think ill give the pistol probe a try.

I got the pistol probe. Didn't like it. BIG, requires two batteries, Need to adjust sensitivity. I returned it and got the Garrett pro pointer. Love the propointer. Just push the button. Both vibrates and beeps. It is almost bullet proof.

The video that i saw on you tube shows that the garrett doesnt get the depth that the pistol probe does.

I have used a Propointer since they came out and they work great for popping coins with a screwdriver. Very little time wasted recovering target. Depending on soil and moisture conditions, it will get 1 1/2 to well over two inches on coin sized objects. In line probes have the advantage of giving you the same sounds through the speaker and also has a cable attaching it to the detector so it cannot be left behind. I speak from experience on that one :)

Both the Pro Pin pointer and Pistol Pro Pin pointers are great. The Garrett is much easier to use more compact better ergonomics.Wearing headphones the Garrett is a little better but the three I've had new and my brother's I used will vibrate but not that effective listen for tone sound or beep. The Pistol Probe is a pain to open the small compartment door in the field to adjust, and is bulky.More difficult to pinpoint surface targets, and requires getting use to and you must keep further away your your detector to prevent cross talk. The one thing the Pistol Pro does better than all the other pin pointers is depth.Once you open a plug to dig you will know right away if it is there or not.I have more multiple finds ever using this pin pointer.

I had a Pro Pistol Probe and was very disappointed with it, to much trouble adjusting sensitivity. I then bought the Garrett ProPointer and I would never hunt again without it. Tough, easy to use and doesn't interfere with my detector. The ProPointer would be a great choice. Never had a problem with depth.

I think i missed one more point on a handheld.... they arent detector specific so if you sell your detector it doesnt have to go to.

I rarely have to adjust the controls on the pistol probe. Some detectors are just not meant to run with a higher sensitivity and the pistol probe is the same way. Keep the sens turned down and you will still get plenty of depth without falsing.

I orderd the pistol probe. Ill let you know how it works out for me.

Thx guys this helps cos i plan on buying one soon.I seen the videos on the pistol pro and Garrett pin pointer.I think that the Garrett will be better at least for me.Pistol pro does seem to go deeper tho.

I had the Garrett and sold it. The pistol proble is more sensitive.
You can adjust the sensitivity on it.

With the garrett ..... in some cases it would not pick up where the
pistol probe will.

Better to have more sesitivity than not enough. Just my opinion.

Maybe you can check out a local detecting club and see
if some members can show you the difference.

My 2 cents...The Pistol Pin Pointer is made off shore. Garrett, Treasure Products and others are made in the USA. You don't always get what you pay for when it's stamped "China". I've also read that you don't want the depth that the Pistol can go, because that's what your detector is for. The pointer should only be able to detect 1" - 1.5", hence the term pin-pointing. If you dig and don't register anything on your pin pointer, use your detector again...that's what it's for! I just bought a Vibra-Probe 580 and can't wait to receive it. It makes no sound and detects ONLY from the tip end, not the sides of the tip. to better help the pin pointing. I'm not saying this is the best, LOL, since I haven't received it yet. I'm just suggesting you buy something "Made in the USA" because you know you'll get quality that will last for years (think resale value!) vs. "Made in China" disposable crap.
