You will laugh but mine don't even have a name on it. The better half order it for remolding from some company. It has 3 settings, electricity, wood stud, metal. It is about the size of a small TV remote. I got to admit it has already helped me pinpoint some difficult targets already. When you dig a plug out and sill don't find the target you just start walking around the hole with the little bugger and it tells you if it is in the side of the whole , in your plug of if you got to go deeper. I feel it is a good time saver. I would have found the targets eventually with my old method but it would have taken longer. Plus if you hunting in a sensitive area where holes could be an issue. It helps limit the size of the hole or the number of holes for those off centered pinpointed targets. Where they would really come in strong is if you ever run into a coin spill. Multiple coins in the same hoop size area is next to impossible to get a pinpoint on unless you are running a 4 inch hoop. I'm using this one until I get enough clad saved up to buy a better one. That way the hobby kind of pays it's own way. Hope this was helpful. You should go back some posts BHLANDSTAR (Now GOGOGOPHER) had posted a very good video on this subject.
Harbor Freight makes an inexpensive one for $15. It has good sensitivity but isn't real durable. Tiny-Tec makes a very good unit for about $45, excellent sensitivity and good construction. I own both and use the Tiny-Tec the most often. It has a hardened tip designed for probing in the soil/sand/bark/tire grind. Also has an automatic shut-off feature in case I forget to turn the switch off. That's my 2 cents worth.
The Tiny-Tec at $45 is a good deal, and I have heard good reports on it....the Vibra-Probe 570 is the T@TS....it vibrates harder and faster the closer the tip is to the target, and has a good range...I forget, but I think like 3"+....Expensive, but nice...I personally use a modified green Teknetics (Bounty Hunter) pinpointer....I like it because it is a NO-Motion Detector, and can be modified for night hunting....I put a bigger buzzer in mine, and brought the LED that is on the board to the outside, so I can see it at night....It is now louder, vibrates harder, and is visible at night with a bright red LED....
i bought a new Automax Precision V4 off of ebay for around $65. a bit high but still a good deal. its a bit large but has both vibe setting and tone. has helped me clear out some troublesome holes. i tend the dig a plug that leaves the coin on the edge of the plug and this pinpointer helps me find the area a lot quicker. its very durable. have a tot lot in mind that prob has 10 inches of mulch that is soft. have plans to take a trip there, find the signal and just push the pinpointer in. save a lot of time and holes...
WELL I DECITED TO GO WITH THE BOUNTY HUNTER THE PRICE WAS 45.00, HOPE THE DARN THING WORKS OK..
WANT TO THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT, THE REASON I WANT TO TRY ONE IS I GET A LOT OF READINGS AROUND 6 TO 8 IN.
AN HAVE BEEN GETTING EMPTY HOLE'S WHEN I GET A HIT AT 2 TO 4 IN IT'S ALWAYS BEEN A FIND OR AT LEAST A
It is common when you dig, that your hole narrows as you dig deeper (at least I tend to do this)...this can leave the target on the sides of your holes...this is where the pin pointer comes into play...Just be sure to tape the battery cover on with white or black electrical tape...It has a tendency to pop off if not taped up...
well don't think I' gonna be happy with the bounty hunter pin pointer, hasn't got here yet but just noticed that it may be the older type the picture shows it to be black an noticed the new ones are green, can any one give me some input on the two, is the black, as good as the new model and is it a No- motion detector,
I guess i should have looked a little better at the picture:veryangry:
Well my pin pointer came in to day, can't wait to try it , orded it from Colonial Metal Detectors
Got good Service, Received it in Three days the good part is there shipping cost is about half what all the others charge
Shipping was $ 7.00 And Insurance was $1.80 an that was Priority Mail I don't see why all the others want $ 14.00 To $ 16.00 shipping an handling?
Al so they did Send the new green model BT
I use the Bounty Hunter green pinpointer. I really like it a lot. It works great and I have saved lots of "sifting and poking around" time by using it. And the battery seems to last a good long while. But, like GoGoGopher says, the battery compartment cap has a tendency to pop off when you least expect it. I learned to hold mine so that I don't put pressure on the end cap (not easy) and don't have any problems. I may try taping mine for insurance though.
Got mine at a Cabelas store for $39. I think it may have been mismarked because they had 7 of them and only the one I bought was marked $39. The rest were $59. Same box....same everything...including loose battery cap. So I figure they either had a sale and missed repricing it or one of their shelf stockers made a mistake. Either way, I made a mad dash for the cashier and tried to not look too guilty or anxious.
Ok I looked over the BH pointer ,, an Noticed that battery cap is slanted in
one direction an will only fit one way , if it puton up side down it will not snap good
an comes off to easy, even if its on the rite way it still not the best fit, so i think I will also Tape it!
ck the pic you can see the angle on cap,
I just purchased the 15.00 one from harbor freight,it looks great and I really like the features,...like the on -off is a spingloaded type,....hold down for on and release its off!!.It also has a sensitivity knob, and when the unit is on,so is a bright lite to guide you to your find. This also comes with a carry case that can be attached to your belt.Just my two cents worth.....HappyHunting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is a pic of my modified teknetics (Green BH) pin pointer...Note the red LED...This lights when the buzzer sounds...
The black epoxy was to fill in a hole that I drilled where the LED placement did not work...my bad planning...lol
Good ideal, (Light) pulled my apart, noticed there's a built in light on the board got to try an figure out how to put a small window on it so I can see the light
al so the buzzer wouldn't wake up a sleeping ant LOL
I think for a quarter BT,, could have put that light to where it could be seen;
al so,,, can not get the board to slide out... I was afraid I'd brake it if I pulled Two hard
You have to take the knob off the thing, then remove the nut and washer under it, then take the little plastic piece out from under the battery area (only fits oone way), then using a pair of needle nose, remove the buzzer, noting how it is installed, then do the same with the board...you can unsolder the LED and use small hookup wire to remote it , I just bought a new brighter smaller LED...wish I woulda got one of the bright blue ones now....
Radio Shack also sells a better Buzzer. Use a 6V buzzer with the highest dB rating...Higher dB rating=more battery drain though...
the LED can only be wired one way...it will not work if wired backwards....My hole is in the forward section of the battery compartment...just ahead of the plastic separator when installed...I used a miniature LED, and #18 PVC coated solid wire (use stranded if you can...I use solid because I do not plan to take it apart again, and it is easier to solder, but it is more brittle when bending it). I used shrink wrap where I soldered the wires to the LED leads, then bent these back carefully at a 90 degree angle to the LED...Ran wires through the slot in the separator plastic, and soldered them where I removed the old LED from the board...Be careful not to overheat the board, or you could irreversibly damage the traces and the board...
As far as the buzzer, just make sure it is a 6 volt unit and it fits in the case...solder it wire for wire....black to black and red to red...
