Pin Pointer

I wasn't particularly interested in one of these things, being set in my old ways, but when I encountered folks on this group discuss them being available at Harbor Freight for 15 bucks *cheap* I rushed right over and bought one. Now admittedly, not being familiar with other units, I really don't have anything for comparison, but still I'm very impressed with it. It's been way too hot here the last few days (108 yesterday) to go out coin hunting, but a little in air testing and fooling around in the back yard show this will be a good helping hand. Thanks to those who were discussing this before, Ron.
Small holes and big sun spots!

Hey silversmith I have been stashing my clad for a pin pointer fund and have been hearing about the ones from Harbor Freight. What kind of distance are you getting air testing the unit? Does the target sound off just near the tip or all the way up and down the antenna? I just may have to try one from there myself.

Be Careful before you order one from Harbour Freight. I have had one on back order for over a month and they just sent me a card that it will be even longer yet.

I have the Harbor Frieght pinpointer. I took it out yesterday and it saved me alot of time trying to locate the target.
Remember its only $15 plus the shipping so its not going to be the best pinpointer since frenxh toast, but it does the job.
The air test got me just over an inch but in real life situation you have to be almost on top of the target, true I'm told of many
pinpointers. BE SURE to put in a quality battery like the Energizer. The battery that comes with the pinpointer is not much
better than the .94 cent cheapos from WalMart. Also remember your talking about a very small coil so naturally your not
going to get a heck of alot of depth.

I also reacted after having it brought to my attention here. But when I went to Harbor Freight and saw that they wanted $6.99 for shipping it sort of turned me off since I know that it could have been half that. I also considered that in my active period between 1979 and 2000 I found thousands of coins, jewelry, medals, etc., I never used a pinpointer. But, nevertheless, joining the 21st centuryI ordered it. That was 33 days ago. A few minutes ago I had a live chat with a HF rep. and canceled the order. Since they had not charged my credit card canceling was a simple affair. Another less battery to deal with.

When you pinpoint with the diminishing signal method, 99 out of a 100 the object will be in the center of the hole that you dig, particularly if it's a shallow object. Deeper ones may require hitting the sides of the hole but as long as it's a good, repeatable signal there's something in there and careful probing of the sides will bring it out.

Try TinyTec. Its only $4 shipping but its a bit more expensive. The pinpointers are on backorder right now. Your right about Harbor Frieght. I won't ever order anything from their mail order again. They use something called "smart Mail. Smart for them but lousy for us. It usually takes 10 to 14 working days. SOmetimes they are out and have to backorder. Nope. Life is too short!

I don't know if a Harbor Freight is near you, but on my way home today, I stopped by and picked one up just to check it out. I am going on vacation next week and I have a nephew who is getting into detecting and I am going to give it to him as a gift. I air tested it and was able to pick up coins at about two inches. A couple of things I like about the Harbor Freight over the my Bounty Hunter pinpointer are:
1. The power button that lets you easily turn it on only when you are using it.
2. The light seems it would be helpful looking down into some holes
3. The audio tone. The tone is louder than the Bounty Hunter.

Using my Bounty Hunter with my headphones on, I don't always hear the tone, but I do feel the vibration it puts out. The Harbor Freight one does not vibrate. Until I can get with my nephew and field test it, I really won't know anything else.

You actually found one in the store? Usually you have to order on line.
After waiting nearly 20 days to get mine and a shipping cost of almost $7
NO WAY will I order through their mail order again. Your lucky if you can buy
the pinpoiner in store. Also I bet there are other places that sell it. Google it and see what comes
up. I used it Sunday and used it and used it. Saved lots of time.

There is a Harbor Freight in the town where I work not 6 blocks from there. I will try them and see. Thanks for all the input.

You're fortunate to have a store near you. Here I am in the greatest city in the world and the nearest HF is in New Jersey! We have 5 boroughs, they could get the NYC business but I don't think anyone is going to bother going to them in NJ when we have similar stores.

i ordered mine on june 16th. in received an e-mail that day and a post card dated june 18th but there is no mention of a back order.

CHeck to see if they have te rock tumbler on hand. Its usually discribed as a rotrary tumbler.
You'll want one to clean your clad. Most banks won't take it otherwise. The Tumbler is only $29.
You can use thick rubber bands in place of the belts that come with it. Cheaper when you have to replace them.

Actually, there were two on the shelf, I bought bith and gave one to my kid. I didn't they were rare till I posted. Good luck, Ron.

I thought about getting a rock tumbler to clean coins. What type of cleaning media do you use? The HF website lists several types. I used to use walnut shells for cleaning 45 cal brass for reloading. Any help appreciated, thanks.

There seem to be various recipes. Some people use gravel. Others use aquarium pebbles.
You name it. Look on the Garrett forum and post your question. It was just recently a topic there. Lots of people there useing the tumbler. Also look on the MXT forum as well. Ask and they will answer.

Go to the Garrett forum and up at the top you will see "Search." Type in rock tumblers. Lots of posts about
what and how people are useing them.
