Incredible finds Rob. And we think an 1800's coin is old..............

Beats the hell out of clad hunting, for sure. Nice finds. At what kind of depth are finding these old coins?

keep on diggin'

Holy smokes!! Like Larry said..an early 1800's coin would be a great find around Illinois. Some day I hope to hook up with one of you in our Country's infancy areas to find something like that. Great finds:clapping:

hi jimmy all dug at 5-6" except the 1710 halfpenny which was at about 8" on a slope down to a riverbank. the two small paddocks that we hammered over the weekend yeilded in excess of fifty coins some of which were so badly coroded they were completely unidentifiable. The philip the 4th coin is french and shows the cross of the knights templar. i have managed to track down several silver or gold coins with very similar markings but no bronze !!!.

Most of the coins found over the last couple of weeks have been either george 3rd william 3rd or Victorian. I was really chuffed to find the george the 1st as it was a very short reign and coins are quite rare.

I have also found quite a few items of interest including a couple of crotal bells and also two pocket watches one gold but both in really poor condition.

V3 rules !!!!!!!!!!

WOW! Really nice! I am in Newfoundland,Canada, which of course is a colony of England. We have French,Spanish and of course English settlers here since the 1500's,hoping at some point to hit a really early coin.So far,the earliest piece I managed to get was a 2 Reales silver coin dated 1808.

Wow! A coin from around 1290! How do coins like that keep from sinking clear out of range of a detector? Did it come to rest on a buried rock or something?

Hi BH Nugget ... in answer to your quessie, the 1290 coin was in normal soil. Correct me if i am wrong but if you imagine the soil you work as water which is constantly moving but very very much slower the materials that are deposited will over time be churned up and down in the soil strata by normal erosion effects and also crop growth churns the soil quite violently. This is why many of us return to fields year after year to find new things that are now within detector range. Also in many cases coins and artefacts will find a natural level within the soil much the same as gold does in a river bed.

I am very lucky to live in an area which is steeped in history with many battles etc taking place on many of the fields i detect on. I am not huge on relic hunting so generally hit old coins in most locations with the oldest stuff being roman.

I think that is about the oldest coin I have seen posted on the forums. Thank you for sharing
K

P.S. Do you have a guest house for visitors?

Hi K ... in answer to your quessie i am trying to set up a deal with one of my local landowners to try and organise something like the colchester boys AKA. Metal detecting holidays here in wiltshire. I currently have about 2000 acres of pasture available for detecting and am adding to this all the time. I have way more land than i can cover with my small group of mates. The farms i am working all border salisbury plain which everything from stoneage to present day being found.
I will place a proper post at sometime to gauge interest .

regards rob

Hi Perchdoctor.... I am from sunny wiltshire in the UK. The nearest town to my detection sites is Westbury on the edge of salisbury plain !!!

You UK guys have so much history it is incredible. The area I live in has towns that haven't been here for 20 years... and the ground they have been built on have barely seen use as so much as a cattle path!
I see those coins around.......... but to pull them out of the fields? Can't get much better than that!

Congrats cloudbuster!!!

we are indeed lucky... I have very few days when i find nothing of real interest. even a one hour trip out last night just to try a new program yeilded a willie the third halfpenny!!!

all the best rob

Does anyone ever find the Willie III pattern two pence? Talk about a chunk of copper! Nice on the half penny too!

I have had a couple of the rather large george the 3rd pennies this year and a couple of cartwheel pennies !!!
