Make sure your cable to the coil is taped as close as possible.

As BCD stated, could be a rust pocket. If you're running your sensitivity higher than four bars you'll get a lot of phantom targets. Could be a tiny target or a piece of foil that gets moved aound and no longer produces a signal. The target could have been flipped off to the side somewhere. Did you check your pile of dirt and around the hole?
