picking up my E trac tomorrow, been studying and have 1 question please...been studying the FE & CO numbers and it seems that the good FE's start at 09 thru 12, so in the coi program why aren't the 1 - 8 FE's discriminated out? Thank You

Congrats on joining the group. Silver dollars have a FE of 1 so you don't want to discriminate out the low FE number because you just might get lucky.

He is right, You have to see those fe readings when Iron in the ground is low.

dont expect every coin to read 12-42 or 12-45. Out in the field (out in the real world) the numbers you get will be far more variable that what the emulator or any list of numbers says. Especially at depth, and with dirty, iron and mineral rich soil. The emulator is a neat tool but its very misleading....in a way. A list of numbers is also misleading. (in a way) Those numbers are for the target at very close range with no interference from the ground or other targets, such as iron. I dont mean to take anything away from the people who worked on that stuff but you DO want to be digging targets that arent so "perfect".

You WOULD want that lower FE number to be "allowed" (ie not discriminated out) so that it will catch your ear and allow you to investigate further. I only found one silver half with the etrac but it was reading numbers such as 6-48, 8-48, etc.

focus NOT on the numbers, but on repeatability. if you watch the videos earthmansurfer here on the site....you will see for a deep coin that the target will "bounce" a bit. its repeatable though.

There are some things that you cant learn by reading, you have to earn your stripes and just get out there and start digging. Experience. Cant get any by reading. I know when I first started I was overwhelmed. I called my etrac R2-D2 because I felt like I was learning a new language from a very fast talker!

I hope this helps, Its what I would tell myself on day one if I could go back in time 1 year.

Good luck and have fun!

Don't worry about the numbers right now. When you get the detector, put it in the stock coin mode and go hunt. Dig everything and learn the responses. There are thousands of posts from the last few years on all the tiny details about how to tweek the E-Trac to be better. For now, just learn the basics. Make sure you read the manual a few times, and get the Andy Sabich book and read that several times. It will shorten your learning curve a lot.

I've owned an E-Trac now for roughly two months. Here is what I learned:

1) When you're new, and you read about those coin numbers, they have a tendency to stick in your head too much and you find yourself JUST looking for the perfect combinations. I thought all coins would ring in at 12-??. I had to learn the hard way. There is a multitude of combinations, but if you want to be successful in this hobby you'll have to dig a lot. You'll need a pin-pointer, and learn to dig good plugs. This will save you time.

2) You need to build a test bed, and to vary the depths of the coins. You have to practice, practice, practice! You HAVE to listen and learn how the machine speaks. Until you learn the language you can't be successful. I'm still learning every day, and it never ends.

3) There is NO perfect pattern, or tone combination that will get you the coins. Just remember this simple concept. If the numbers are in the coin range, bouncy, iffy, whatever, but it's a REPEATABLE target from more than two angles, then just dig it. Sure you'll dig trash. We all do, but you'll find those old coins in the process.

4) Be patient. Every time you get out and hunt, you'll learn what your machine is saying. Soon you'll be able to tell what a lot of the targets are before you dig them. Not always, but you will learn what's what.

5) Go on YouTube and watch videos. hours of videos of what the E-Trac sounds like over coins. It's a great way to get a head-start.

Good luck. :)

Yesterday I dug my secons V nickel of the week that was deep and read a solid 01-11 and a narber last week on edge was 01-41

I too dug a couple of V nickels. Yesterday I was on a deep nickel quest. Both V nickels rang in all over the board. They mostly hit 03/09 03/05. But they were about 10 inches deep and repeatable so I dug them.
