Pain in forearm and tendon? Newbie problem?

So I was just curious if you gents had a similar issue when starting out.
The two tendons on the top side of your elbow.
I'm fairly new and maybe doing something wrong and if so in need of advice. Or is it just something you go through when starting out?

I've tried to relaxy grip a bit which has helped, but still there when o make a fist with my arm out stretched

Cut down my time swinging so any help would be appreciated.... I don't want to cut down lol.

Stefan, I got an Aircast Arm Band and used it for my "tennis elbow" It worked well and did not hamper elbow flexibility. Google that name. I paid about 13 bucks for mine. I tried shots, but found if I iced the sore area at night and used this band during the day, the pain went away in about a week.
 
Yes, adjust the length of the rod so the coil is just in front of your feet. Move it back and forth without moving your shoulder. The coil should not move very far out of your walking area. You are not weed whacking or swinging a sickle. You will have some discomfort doing a lot of something you have never done, even when doing it correctly.
Good luck and take a couple of days off.

AirCast works great, used them for years.
Relax your grip.
Some detectors are coil heavy, they don't balance naturally, so you end up using your wrist and forearm muscles to balance.
That is one reason you find some detectors have the battery box under the arm cuff as a counterweight.
Back in the day's of lunch box detectors, you developed strong forearms............and they never felt heavy.
 
one of those hand crunches works to strengthen those muscles , I have swung how many times millions back and forth got a whites detector it used muscles I don't usually use detecting different balance on their detectors my arm / shoulder were like couldn't move for 2 days but now its fine on the whites muscles get stronger from ripping and healing.

its just about strengthening those swinging muscles :biggrin:

Bite the bullet and get a Minelab Pro Swing 45 Harness and never look back on sore muscles or aches and pains, regardless of what kind of detectors you have. I never go without mine, can hunt all day long and I never have anymore complaints of sorer elbows/arms/shoulders even if using the largest coils made for the detector.
 
This thread reminds me of King Henry VIII's flagship (The Mary Rose) that went down in the English Channel in the early 1500's. There were a number of skeletons recovered and they were able to distinguish the bowmen/archers because they had more developed bone/s on the arm that was used for drawing the tight bow strings back. The bowmen were also said to developed a stronger arm by lifting small barrels of some kind of weights inside with that particular arm.
My arm was sore starting out and I haven't ever got used to any arm or sling support. Fortunately I was able to work through the discomfort by detecting on a regular basis and can detect most of the day without discomfort. Maybe that's why I have a 23 inch bicep on my swinging arm? lol!!!!!! just kidding!
 
Well I've decided before buying doo-dads to help, I'll change how I swing. I've been using a straight arm swing and that seems to be where the stews is from.
As some said above I'll shorten the pole and try a swing with my elbow bent where my upper arm is more parallel to my torso and make smaller swings more centralized to my right side which is the arm I use. I tried a little and it seemed to be better. The pain was when I extended my arm and squeezed. With a bent arm there's almost no discomfort.
I'll update as to how it's going.
 
Bring it on in..Arm is slightly bent at the elbow, upper arm is kind of against the side of the chest, coil only moves about 2.5 -3ft left and right. Try different methods, everyone is built a bit different.. However, when I met a guy almost 80, who I saw swinging in a ball field for 3 hours, I watched what he did and that is what I do..
 
About the only thing I can add to what has already been said is. take it easy...when we start off and have some good finds, our enthusiasm jumps high to the sky...sadly, our body has to try to keep up and sometimes fails...take a day off here and there....learn to swing with both arms, so that if one arm gets a bit weary, switch to the other. That means you might have to adjust your recovery style, but you can work that out as you go. Think back to before you started detecting, and think about how much you used one particular arm to do what you are doing now. Cutting down on the number of hours you hunt will help until you build up stamina in the right places....look at doing some varied exercises with small weights, so that you are developing muscles from your back, shoulders down to your fingers...a sprinter doesn't just wake up one morning and decide he will go outside and run 100 metres in 9.4 seconds. He trains for years to get there....be patient, ease back a bit and let your body catch up with your enthusiasm. HH
 
Dont over do it.. i swung for years with no problem, didnt even know what tendonitis was.. spent a week at the shore swinging the coil in water... that pain stuck with me for months... every so often i switch swinging arms even if only for 5 minutes, it gives your primary swinging arm a break... i stiil get mild tendonitis after a day of swinging but it fortunately goes away a day later... for what its worth when i do get tendonitis pain i sleep with my arm bent at a 90 degree angle with hand pointing up and i find this helps relieve the pain and speeds up recovery. ... of course the best cure is not getting it in the 1st place. Good luck..

I also work out 3 days a week so that might not be helpong. Haven't swung for a couple days.
 
45 years of swingin' and I have Always switched hands so as to give each arm about equal use. Never had a problem--did switch from using MineLabs for nugget hunting because when I switched hands the battery cable was wrapped around me--White's TDI Pro solved that problem.
 
You could get your wife or girlfriend to swing the detector and you just dig all the treasures. That went over like a lead balloon at my house but you never know until you try. Seriously, all the folks have given you some real good ideas to try, have fun detecting and keep us posted.
 
I was hoping for the other way around :wiggle: but its not abuse I will go her halves in the finds :clapping: now I wonder why I am single :cheekkiss:
