overloading on quarters

When I am detecting and come across a quarter that is on the surface while pinpointing it shows an overload this is in the coin and jewelry factory program no changes is this normal?

First you have to check if the coil is good. Hold the coil at waist height , turn TX boost off, and set RX=15. The coil should not overload.

Next try the quarter with TX boost off if you had it on. You can't always run TX boost.

Finally let me know what you signal% reading is in the sensitivity zoom window.

I checked for a bad coil and did not get an overload when i put it over a quarter i noticed that i forgot to turn rx down and on 15 it would just barely show a quarter signal super quick as i passed over it and overload as it was passing ...my gain was on 7 when i turned it up so i lowered it to 5 and it was stable with no overload.... I love this machine and i know I have a way to go to learn the ins and outs but won't give up...overloading on rx 7 does that tell you something? thanks thedoc

I forgot to say which coil i was using it is the eclipse 5.3

What about the signal% reading?

on the factory settings it is 27.3 which is rx 7...on rx 15 it is 58.......when i dropped down to rx 5 it is 19.5

Does it have the V on the mounting ear? I haven't had much experience with overloading but I would guess it has more to do with the small size of the coil and a larger close target. I would not worry much about the overloading of surface quarters, when it overloads, raise your coil up a couple of inches and rescan.

My suggestion is to call White's service, you may very well have a defective coil even though it does not overload in an air test. Also try lowering your discrimination sensitivity instead of the RX Gain and see if that helps.

Yes it is a v rated coil I just thought it was strange to be overloading on a coin with the factory setting ...i will talk to whites and keep playing around with some settings but with the gain on 5 it is working good....thanks thedoc

Now we are getting somewhere. What the 58% is telling you is with no target the coil is 58% of it way to overloading. I wouldn't hunt with RX15. The 27% is just fine.

Now the next step, in the same spot use your 10D2, if the % is much lower the coil has a problem.

It ended up way lower I got at rx15 with the 10DD between 4 and 5.....at rx 7 between 2 and 3 ....at rx 5 between 1 and 2 .....thedoc

OK, so it is all in your coil. When you call explain the readings between the 2 coils and you should be all set. You now know what the signal% means.

Before everybody calls Whites, the % reading has no affect on performance unless it is high enough to cause overloading. The SEF will run higher % readings than Whites coils but if they don't overload they work just fine.

Hey thedoc,

I use the v rated 5.3 eclipse coil too. Here is a simple way that I use including Rob's first response. Yes TX Boost - OFF. But I start with RX gain at 4 and increasing to say 11 or 12 or until it overloads. If that occurs, I back it down one number at a time until it smooths out. Had no problems with my 5.3 . . . very smooth. You might have a bad coil?
