Ordered the parts to modify my Lobo ST

My mods will be:

Will be adding a manual Ground balance pot for the Disc mode.

Will be adding a second Discriminator pot and a switch for Disc 1 or Disc 2. Basically creating a coin check switch. Disc 1 will always be set for iron rejection. Disc 2 set to reject just below coins. Toyed with the idea of two variable resisters and just using a switch as a coin checker like a Troy Shadow, but in the end decided a second pot would be more versitile.

Right now I'm thinking about putting all this in a Compadre housing mounted on the rod in the normal position so everything would be at my finger tips.
Disc Ground Balance, Disc 2 pot, Disc 1/Disc 2 switch, and moving the Disc/All Metal switch up there too.

I'd leave all the Compadre guts and pot in place so I could still use it as a compadre if I wanted to.

Or second option will be to keep the ground balance and Disc 2 pot close to the Lobo Box, and just wire the Disc1/Disc 2 switch and the AM/Disc mod switch to the front.

Still thinking about the best way. But either way, by this time next month my Lobo will be smoking!

I think so too, Rick.

The hard part would be teaching newbies how to ground balance the Disc side without a threshold.

What I go around and around with is: Do I keep the mods so that I can still hipmount the box if I ever wanted to, or do I lock it onto the shaft forever.

The Lobo SuperTraq is an extra special unit with a little trickout added to it.

Good luck. I'm getting ready to add the disc check on my Compadre like the Troy, only with it set to break up on tabs. Had it on my Silver umax and enjoyed the notchlike feature.

If you haven't already, try mounting it under your arm, it balances real well. For extra comfort take a wood dowel and cut it so you can back up your arm cup about an inch (the front hole on the arm cup will still need to go thru the last set of holes on S rod) and it will make it even more comfortable, I've done this with all my Tesoro's and works great.

I like hipmounting. Makes the it's real light. I've taken a Lobo st in the water with the box in a plastic bag in a small back pack to almost chest deep. I saw Keith's mod on the lobo st and it was hot. I want another one sometime.

Rick, adjusting the Disc ground balance negative is no joke. In milder dirt it turns the Lobo in a terrific old coin unit. And that is exactly what I am doing by adding the Disc Ground Balance pot. Much of my ground would be too hot to use it that way but there are places where it would be a magnificent deep coin shooter. I like the deep audio response of the Lobo ST.

Hi DertNC,
That is how I have it mounted now, under the arm. I also replaced the shallow Tesoro Armrest with a Teknetic's arm rest. The Tek is deeper and has the slot for the armrest strap. Much more comfortable to swing. Plus the legs on the Tek armrest are wide enough for the box to fit between with no issues.

I would highly recommend anyone running a Tesoro to replace their Tesoro armrest with a Teknetics arm rest. They fit perfectly with the two bolt Tesoro armrest pattern, they allow the use of a armstrap, the legs support the detector better when set down on the ground, and they make the whole detector much more confortable to swing. I know, I know, Tesoro's are already lightweight units, but you'd be supprised at how much a simple thing like a deeper armrest and a strap makes it even better.

I think its Tesoro arm rest I'm using. Might be a Fisher  I'd better check it tonight and see so I give the right info.

thought about doing the same idea with the tigershark and the sand shark all in one housing and toggle between both . Only thing I would have todo would be switch coils.

Got mine tuned to go through highly mineralised antic pottery and slightly boosted do it is a really pleasant machine to use.......i put the NEL snake on it too......

I could barely get 8 inches on any coin in Disc, but was getting a foot on heavy mens gold rings in All Metal. Then I found a mod that boosted my depth on quarters and halves to almost a foot in Disc, but still stuck at 8 inch on dimes and pennies and it chatters more now. Just wondering if a NEL or Dtech coil makes any difference? I have all the Tesoro coils and they are all about the same depth wise. I use the 3 x7 the most as its great in tot lots around playground metal.

Mike,

How does one do negative GB adjustment on LST? Sounds great for black farm dirt and plowed field hunting.

Tom, Have you used the new 8X11 RSD coil on the LST. Considering getting one, would like to hear your opinion. I really like the stock 6X9, also using a 10X12 and it does go deep
especially at the beach in dry sand.
Thanks Don

Newest coil they have put out. 11X8 widescan, "Responsive Signal Design". Great claims from the factory. Some members reports confirming that on the Vaquero.

I must be the dullest knife in the drawer. The day my parts showed up I got all hot and lathered up over another metal detector and sold my Lobo ST and a couple of other good detectors to buy the new girl. And guess what???? At the end of the day, I didn't even buy the new girl.

Man...sometimes this detectoritis just kills me.

Sounds like an idea that should have been done along time ago. With the Lobo WOW. Thats a beast of a unit and Ive always loved it especially for its sensitivity and depth. With that additional disc option That would be nice. Looking forward to seeing and hearing about the finished outcome.
