Omega 8000 vs T2

lafatlife said:
I had a garrett 2500 and loved that machine but after I hurt my shoulder I just couldn't swing it anymore. Last year I went through a few detectors and chanced upon the Omega. It was a wonderful thing!! The machine was amazing and I understood what it was telling me. I had a safari and it blew me away. I just couldn't stand all the constant beeping over every little piece of metal. I like to detect because it is relaxing to me. I don't like getting frustrated with a machine and just go home.

The omega as well as the t2 are both great machines but as I said earlier if forced to give up one, it would be the t2 mostly because of the notching feature of the omega.

I don't remember if I mentioned, but I have 2500 and for me it is a back killer. I liked the machine so much I ordered the Swingy Thingy, and it does help, but I feel like it is, in its own way uncomfortable, and just something else to keep up with and adjust. So the 2500 will go up for sell and Omega 8000 will get its seat at the dinner table. Shame though, the 2500 has its advantages, but ergonomics in my opinion is one aspect in which it is woefully lacking.

I tried the swingy thingy but I like to swing out wide to the right and I had to push against the thingy which put pressure on my shoulder. Couldn't do it.

I'll stick to my t2 and o8.

Hit a demo last evening using my Omega with some friends, two using the V3i and one using the new MXT Pro.

First off I found the perfect solution for the Omega not having a backlight, the Energizer Trail Finder 6 LED Headlight (best deal is at Wallyworld - $12.88 ). The Energizer 6-LED headlight features two powerful Luxeon LEDs, 2 white Nichia LEDs and 2 Night VIsion red LEDs which provide a maximum output of 20 lumens of bright, white light and 50 hour run time on 3 AAA batteries (included). It has four light modes - spot, flood, spot+flood and night vision. The ratchet tilt adjusting headlight directs light where it's needed (very handy, really essential feature).

I didn't think I'd like wearing it, but to be honest it was great, I didn't even know it was there. I used the night vision red LEDs and I could see the Omega display perfectly. I also managed to score three silvers and six wheatbacks from a VERY stingy demo site :bouncy: The hunter with the MXT Pro got one silver and a few wheatbacks, and the V3i hunters got no silver and just a couple of wheatbacks. Not that I'm attributing my success solely to the Omega as I know the other machines are very capable and would've easily found my finds, but it IS a coin magnet and I'm finding out that it LOVES silver

I'm curious what you all think about the T2 vs Omega8000 here in Europe. Most of the coins I find in Germany are dime sized. I did find a few bigger quarter sized coins as well but there does seem to be a dominance of smaller coins. Now, maybe that is due to the T2 being sensitive on smaller coins. I don't know as I haven't spoken to other detectorists here yet.

Do you think I would still get a lot of the smaller coins just as well with the Omega 8000?

Hey Brian

The O8 did great at the demo! I new it would as it has lightning fast response and good depth. I was a little surprised that you were getting interference and none of the other 3 machines were. The O8 is a real silver magnet and is hard to beat for the price.

Hey Ray,

I'm surprised nobody else got interference where we ended at, but I understand the V is almost immune to EMI (at least from an audio interference stance, I would think it'd loose some depth from EMI) and it would make sense that the MXT Pro handles EMI well too. Maybe the control units encased in a metal box makes all the difference  Unfortunately, in my experience, all the newer FT machines seem prone to EMI issues (my F75 LTD really wigs out at that spot at times)

Hopefully we'll pull many more keepers from that spot

Ok, you got me thinking. First I am coming from the position of being new to the sport and owning a classic the whites eagle spectrum. My eagle has lots of options and seems to run well except it seems to love the hot rocks we have here in Colorado. For those of you familiar with the eagle or the XLT I have notch out 93 - 95 to keep from digging to many empty holes. The other thing I notice compared to some other machines is that the eagle, XLT, and DFX lack the ability to tune in the live mode I.e. When changing ac, dc , and preamp I do not know how those changes affected operation until I get out of programing mode. I do think my eagle is an excellent detector my only reason I am thinking is I would like to do some prospecting and the low freq of then eagle and xlt seem to hamper that option. I noticed that the omega is a low freq machine so I am guessing it is not ideal for prospecting. On the other hand both the T2 and F75 are medium freq machines that may do ok in a prospecting in Colorado and also relic hunting. But maybe I am wrong and the omega may work fine. My priorites relic, coin, prospecting. Any thoughts?

This is a great thread..was really looking at both units..looks like the 8000 it is!!!

Very good thread. I'm still torn, I will probably be mostly coin shooting. But here in my great soil the depth of the t2SE would come in handy. I stll don't know which to get. Depth isn't everything but my brothers minelab searched my house and got some deep wheats that my tesoro could only detect in all metal. Dan

ds6191..Minelabs are excellent in highly mineralized soil...like a E-Trac/Explorer SE.....but they cost alot more than a Omega. Its what the wallet is willing to give. My only real beef with Minelab is the weight/poor ergonomics and price. In a price/performance ratio.....a Omega with 3 coil package walks all over the two aforementioned Minelabs. The T2SE is great for highly mineralized soil especially in regards to relic/prospecting matters. For coinshooting, still the Omega. IMHO I think First Texas is going to come up with a new machine(s) based on the Omega platform because it seems to do so many different hunting options fairly well. Provided one uses all 3 coils.

I have owned both and although omega is a great detector t2 ltd in my soil is several inches deeper in bp and handles emi better for me.

I agree with Jmann above
I too own both the Omega and the T2SE

For the past 2 weeks i have put the T2 away and gotten back out my Omega but with the 15 inch coil.
I have been finding some cool stuff / 7 silver coins in the past 2 weeks 2 Indian head pennies and another buffalo this evening along with a silver locket.

The Omega for me is probably as some have mentioned a better ID'ing machine than the T2.
My Omega is more susceptible to EMI.

The T2 has been great and since purchasing it i have found 30 silver coins / so its not just a relic machine.
Both have their place for me, I like the Omega in the urban parks and the T2 out in open fields and older homesteads.
My T2 will air test further away from the coil than my Omega with the same size coil.

I cant say it enough, both machines are great and i'm glad i get to play with both.
Once the finds start to slow down with the Omega, i'll get out the T2 and go at it some more.
That's another thing i like to do, is change between the two so that i don't get complacent with either one.

NELi tornado have 12x13 13'' not 15''.
do not you write the truth

If you are at an iron infested site, use the D3 tone with minimum discrimination, no higher than 16 that will get rid of small nail. If you hear a low tone and high tone together dig it. You will find a coin or good object with iron. I Love this machine. The deeper the target is the fainter the sound is, it help if you use head phones, it will get you those real deep target.
