old carnival (newly bulldozed ) grounds coughs it up

JimmyCT

Well-known member
With the second bulldozing of the property, coins finally started getting coughed up. My weekend hunt snagged:

(1) V-nickel 1911

(3) buffalo nickels 1919, 1920 and 1935

(2) Indian Head cents -1896 and 1908

wheat cents, (2) 1910, 1911, 1914 - not quite sure / hard to read) 1917, 1919, 1920, (2) 1941, 1940, 1944, 1945, 1947, 1949, and 1952.

(1) 1943 Mercury dime

(1) 1947 Roosevelt dime

(1) 1911-D Barber dime (One way signal)

All coins were relatively shallow targets (1-4" deep) The barber was approx 7"

These buffalo's and V-nickel are the first I have ever found with a metal detector (registered around 137 - 139)

I found the marble sitting right on top of the ground. It looks as if they are going to start installing the drain system for the field.

I wish I had a few of you to help me. Too much field and not enough detectors lol. Any section I went to I was pulling up coins. All that I can say, "it was a blast!" and glad I had the opportunity to save some coins from the old carnival days before the new field is in place. I certainly found my share of pulltabs, bottlecaps, wire, odds & ends too. No need for pics of that garbage. Thanks for looking - Jim

Here is a visual of the former carnival grounds. I was like a kid in a BIG sandbox lol.

Hi FKP,

It is a shame as I know there are more coins crying out from the ground "save me, save me" lol

nice haul ! Shame you don't have more time.

Earthly

Is the marble glass ?

or agate, harder than glass

or malachite, (copper carbonate) very soft.

My wife collects & wears malachite jewellery and it looks very similar.

Good finds what ever, best of luck

Peter

WOW now thats some old coin and lots of them , st to badd you did not have two weeks on that site, NICE HAUL JIM

Thanks Gunnar.

I feel there is so much more there. I was hoping I could have a least two months to detect the preferably in oct & nov when it is cooler lol. The heat / sun this past weekend was pretty brutal being in an open field. I had SPF 50 suntan lotion on and and I still baked. It was worth it though.

Nice finds there Jim!!
Looks like a nice assortment of dates there and lots of potential if you can get back in there before they cover everything up.
I have a play field that was also scalped several weeks ago at an old school to install a drain system, but about 12-14 inches of soil was removed.
I believe if there were any old coins there, they were scooped up as now there are no kind of signals at all in there.
Luckily, we hit it hard in the Spring and although only one silver coin was found ( a 1963 quarter ), my buddy and I found lots of clad and he found a nice high school ring that he returned to the owner shortly after finding it.
Turns out the owners son lost it about 7 years ago while at the field.
Keep on hitting that site and posting photos!!!

Jim,
That site looks very much like the one I mentioned above.. how much soil was removed?
Those dirt piles may be worth checking too if you haven't already considered it.

Thanks Felix,

I was going to go tonight as they started installing the drains in the field but we had severe thunderstorms roll through. The temp dropped 10 degrees sinced it rained. Nice and cool outside - "perfect" detecting weather.

What a great site - I hope for your sake that they get delayed and you can get more time to recover all the goodies..........

Judging by what you found there could be many 100's of coins to be found....

Good luck

for the most part 5-6 inches but along the one side ( from where I took the camera shot) they took close to a foot. I was wondering if I should hit the piles. I figured hitting the ground would hold more now that the top layer is gone? I know I am limited for time. During the week, If I can get down there, I might have a couple of hours in the evening to do my searching and they are moving slower then I thought! (which is a good thing) The other thing is I read in the local paper is that they have 60 days to get the job done! I surely hope they take ALL 60 days lol. Today they dug a hole in the front of the property and installed the first drain and created a nice new pile of dirt for me :)

Jim,
You are probabaly right in thinking of doing better since only about 5 to 6 inches of dirt was removed and judging by what you have found so far, they are still there.
The area I searched had too much dirt removed to do any good, and that is why I decided to try the dirt piles, but I so far only a few newer coins have been found on the piles.
Good luck at that site and I hope you get some time and decent weather to continue searching it.
I'm surprised no one else has been hitting that site!!

lol funny you say that Felix. I was thinking it to myself and didn't want to say it outloud or I might "jink" myself lol. I am really surpised too that no one else figured the history of the area out. If they did, they would be down there in a heart beat! It all comes down to research. If they don't read up, they will never know what they are missing.

You have some nice finds there. Try to get back there before they pave the area over for a parking lot. :detecting:

Wow, nice pictures. Hope that you can get back there often.

Thanks w8pea.

The majority is going to be a ballfield. In the front of the lot they are adding parking for 6 cars. Once they lay down the sod- game over.
