Ok I've played around with the excal settings...

Well, I still stay with a silent search as I have heard so many times and I still get my gold at times. I find that the setting just below audible works for me. Thanks for answering the question, You Da Man.

I too tried those settings today and they work great. I tried others as well because this is only my 2nd time with it, I managed to get a 9ct ring. One thing I noticed is even though the sensitivity at 6 is the best position (for where I live as well), I could turn it up to 7 and still have it working so that it's not too annoying, though you get a few false signals every now and again, I prefer 6. I left the sens on 1 by accident because I thought I had turned up all the way to 10 and still no noise, then when I checked to see why I wasn't getting any target signals I realised that the numerics on that dial are the other way round, dam:tongue:

I got my Excal 1000 (blue model) a year ago and used it along the East coast of Florida for about 5 weeks while camping there. Only found a few coins. I did not know about this forum then and used the handbook suggestions for settings. After about 10 hours of what I thought was normal response, the machine began falsing non-stop so had to use a backup for most of the trip. Wish I had known what you guys have been saying. I sent it back to Minelab and it came back with an Excal II coil. Does that make it an Excal 1 1/2 ?? I have been landlocked and not used it since repair work, but assume that with new knowledge from here and reading Clive's book that I might have better luck when I go down in March. Hope I might meet some of you there!

ratpack, I wish I could take all the glory on those settings, but that goes primarily to cjc. If you have not read Clive's, "Advanced Methods for Finding Gold in the Water with the Minelab Excaliber", you owe it to yourself to get a copy and pour over it, several times. GREAT READ!

I didn't know they had a book like this. Thanks for the tip. I'm going to order it today.

Gulf Hunter is the man when it comes to the Excal !!!!!!!!! I believe in him 1000 % and here's some of the proof from my 1st time out with my new Excal II 800 in freshwater !!!! :yo:
