and I've been out with my new excal twice.... And I've found some good stuff (cannonball). I'm using the excal for beach hunting and relic hunting... can anyone give me some tips on how to fine tune it for the beach/relic hunting.

Like the sens do I leave it in auto? or should i try and dicker with it. and any other tips would be greatly appreciated..

thanks.....
Pappy

Pappy my advise would be to get out of Auto, asap. You could do much better. Set to Disc, Volume as loud as you can stand, Discrimination 1 (this never moves), and set the Threshold to barely audible and then down just a touch lower. Try the Sensitivity setting around noon, that is with the arrow pointing toward the coil, savvy? You should notice gains immediately, from where you were set previously and you will not have to listen to all the static through the headphones either, which was causing you to miss the subtle tones. savvy? OH YEAH, if you are golf swinging, that won't git it either. Keep the coil level. as low as possible and sweep slowly. Best of luck to ya mate.

Change the sens like you suggested. I was digging junk 12" down easy. Found a bunch of change....

Thanks for the suggestions.

Later..

Kinda figured that would line you right out mate! I expect to see great things out of you now Pappy! I'd say yer on the road to glory!

Thats is some Good information. That is the setting that I use and as you say s l o w d o w n'goldnugget'charlotte'n c

Gulf you are always right there to help us out. Thanks for all your help. I have been out now with my new EX-cal.11 10 times now and found 2 gold rings and believe it or not a gold chain with the name Lexie attached( what a machine) and allot of coins and for some strange reason NICKELS???? ....thanks bud

ratpack, I wish I could take all the glory on those settings, but that goes primarily to cjc. If you have not read Clive's, "Advanced Methods for Finding Gold in the Water with the Minelab Excaliber", you owe it to yourself to get a copy and pour over it, several times. GREAT READ!

Gulf Hunter,

I tried your setting, first time using the Excalibur II and had no problem detecting in or out of the water, found a lot of stuff, but no gold :-( Maybe tomorrow. Thanks for the advice / post.

Mstal, the gold WILL come, stay on it! Dig every repeatable tone, no matter how raunchy it sounds, and rememeber 1' per second on the sweep. Low and slow, will get cha the gold mate!

Gulf Hunter,
Took your advice today. The pull tabs really give a great tone, got 15 of them today. I even found half of one in about 8 inches of sand. I had a blast though, time went by so fast! You've been a great help, thanks

i bought the book and in the 2nd reading I'm starting to get it. if you never owned an ex-cal it takes time to understand what the author is trying to get across to his readers. i find the best way to understand the book is to use the ex cal and read the book again and again....thanks buddy

Most of what you see from me are original Excal settings. I do not even own an Excal II, the old one is working JUST FINE! I like it! Joe DeMarco still has some 1000s left. for $999.97, that is a pretty sweet deal.

I agree, that's why he called it "advanced", LOL! I am STILL learning things about my Excals and have been using them steadily, since Jan. '06. I have 100s of hours of water hunting with the units and it still baffles me that I do not know it all yet, but I'm learning everytime I hit the water. Best of luck out there mate.

Much of the things we read may not make sense until you have used the Sovereigns or Excalibur's and re read the info again. You will learn something new each time out with it and get better as you learn.

I also took your advice on the Excal II and all I can say, IS I LOVE THIS MACHINE, Thanks GH

got the book, and have learned allot but i do have a question about the threshold, it said in the owners manual that if the threshold set too low you can loose faint signals. by setting the threshold to where its just audible then just a Little more so you cant hear it, will i miss the faint signals?

Thanks again for your time, Ratpack Bill

You know, "ratpack", that is the ONE question that is still a MAJOR issue for me as well when it comes to metal-detecting in general, specifically with the Excalibur II. I just do not understand it! Perhaps someone could explain this in a pedagogical way. Because the way things are right now, the owners manual and the advice from highly experienced metal-detectorists are in juxtaposition.

IMO, no. I think you get more, because you are able to hear a blip, that may be masked by too high of a threshold. I feel like the only reason to have an audible threshold in the water, is to be able to tell when the unit goes into the, "high pitched strained tone" that cjc warns about the unit losing depth, because it is "not dealing well with the ground. I like it where it is so silent, that you can barely hear anything. If the threshold tone comes back over the headphones, then I turn it down a little more. The results are staggering. I have been using the Excal, since Jan. '06 and I'm STILL learning things about it and things that I can do to be more successful. Don't plan to master it overnight, it takes time, but learn as you go and try to use the information, that others have already experienced, so you don't have to make the same mistakes that we did.
