OK, I don't know WHAT is going on...my best find EVER today!

That is surely a great coin that looks like it was dropped the day after it was minted. My hunting buddy Neal had a few coins professionally graded. According to him, almost all dug silver coins are going to come back marked as "cleaned". It is because of the tiny abrasions that the coin gets from moving around in the soil. Sorry to be a downer on this super coin. I am not sure exactly which grading service he sent them to. Some are less strict. I often wondered if one would carry a coin around for a year, if it would actually get a better net grade, or at least not be marked "cleaned"?
Enjoy that coin - it is a trophy! Congratulations!

Outstanding find Steve :yo: I agree with Elton, the more in tune you become with your detector, the more you take "luck" out of the equation. It is certainly in great condition but the grade only matters if you're going to sell it and they'd have to pry that one out of my cold, dead fingers. Congrats:beers:
Great pictures too.

Sweet coin, congrats and thanks for sharing!

PCGS will not grade a cleaned coin NGC will having it slabbed will keep it undamaged and easy to handle JMHO

Blank Planet --

By "cleaned," I assume you mean "rubbed?" I did nothing but swish this coin in water to get the loose dirt off...wonder if they would grade it? You say NGC will grade it, I also have heard of detectorists having good luck with ANACS grading "dug" coins. Anyone know what "slabbing and grading" would cost?

Steve

WITH NGC STEVE -EXPRESS WILL RUN YOU 15-20 DOLLARS -BACK IN 8-10 DAYS
WANT IT FASTER -IT WILL BE MORE -NGC IS THE BEST PCGS NEXT AND ICG
ANACS IS AT THE BOTTOM -MOST PEOPLE DONT LIKE THEM -THEIR GRDED COINS
BRING LESS THAN THE OTHERS -BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT REGARDED AS OF
GOOD AUTHORITY AS THE OTHERS --I HAVE HAD A LOT OF THEM SLABBED
GOOD LUCK
CANT TELL BY THE PICS .BUT THIS DOLLAR IS SNOW WHITE
GIVES YOU AN IDEAL ANYWAY --CURT

Steve, someone back in another post said that all coins found detecting would be considered cleaned just from being in the ground moving around in the dirt etc.. i am unsure how true that is but was just saying that PCGS will not grade cleaned coins, without seeing your coin in hand i couldn't make a call on that either, if they would say cleaned or not? PCGS are the bench mark NGC would grade a cleaned coin and would have to come in 2nd in the coin industry, its a nice coin for sure but a good way to check it out for marks is with a nice loupe for scratches dings etc..still would be worth slabbing to keep it safe and have a grade for future reference.

THE MAJOR COIN GRADERS ARE ALL CHANGING THEIR THOUGHTS
ON COINS CONSIDERED CLEANED -THEY ARE STARTING TO GRADE MORE THAT ARE
BUT- THEY WILL COME BACK WITH AN OVER ALL LESSER GRADE AND MARKED CLEANED

Interesting, guys. I guess the "cup half full" way of looking at this, is, I actually dug a coin that is forcing me to have to learn about coin grading, etc. But, the "cup half empty" perspective is that it's tough to know what to do -- if, and where, to send this thing in...

Great find Steve . . :please:

But unless you are planning on parting with it, which I know you are'nt. I would'nt bother having it graded.

Dave, you nailed it. I'm not parting with it! :) My only thought was that since I plan to "hand down" my silver coins to my daughter someday, it might help her to know "what she has," if this one were "graded."

On the other hand, it can always be graded later, if need be, so I may just take your advice and hang onto it...
