OK Here's The Plan

I've gone to this same site twice this week and hunted it with the Silver uMax. I was basically digging everything in hopes of finding a gold ring. Both times I hunted the same size areas adjacent to one another and found nearly the same type trash. Mostly the old style beaver pull tabs and rings. I found some small silver jewelry that was in the zinc penny range.

So here's the plan, take the Golden uMax, set the discrimination at the 'preset', switch the notch switch to narrow so not to notch out zinc pennies and turn the notch width control knob just far enough to knock out those beaver tail pull tabs and rings. Dig all good repeating beeps. That's the plan.:)

I always thought the majority of Gold rings came in with the Tabs. I could be wrong..

Most gold rings that are lost are girl's and women's small sized rings. They mostly fall in the foil and nickel range, not the tab range.

This is an excellent read: http://www.findmall.com/read.php?18,1750754

But won't you be losing out on the bigger gold rings?

Well yeah, but I can only dig so many targets a day. I'm playing the odds.

So I take it where you hunt is more conductive to womens rings?

Have you not noticed that girls wear more jewelry than the average guy does?

The plan also included getting to the site at daybreak (6:00) to beat the heat. I woke up about an hour too early, so I went back to bed to get an extra hour's sleep. I over slept. I took three hours instead of one. The plan is on hold until tomorrow.:)

I don't mean to sound bragging. I have found over 100 gold rings. My best gold ring find appraised for $2000.00. Most were not any thing to write home about but they were 10K -14K and 3 18K. I think most gold rings lost are ladies rings. After all who wears the most rings. I believe most gold rings lost are in the foil-nickel range. But location plays the biggest part in finding gold rings.. Go where gold rings are likely lost. Swimming areas and places where there is action.Volleyball courts-soccer sidelines ect.....Jack

I also meant to say the larger gold rings read in the pull tab range. I do not have the time or the back to dig every pull tab in a park......Jack

Good luck, went in with the same philosophy myself, last week. It seems ground conditions affect not only discrimination but notching as well.

Well I got to hunt a little this morning. I covered 2 1/2 times the amount of area with the Golden uMax as I did in two days with the Silver uMax and ended up digging about half the amount of trash. I didn't get any beaver tail pull tabs, but the amount of can saw I dug increased. I probably could have cut down on half the can saw that I dug if I had been a little more selective in how well the targets sounded. Some of the audio responses were pretty weak and broken up. I did find 7 nickels. If there was a ring in the area that I hunted for the last 3 days, I believe I would have found it. You can't find something that not there.:) Keep in mind, this area has been cherry picked to death by me and others. In an area that has not been cherry picked, I would have dug hand fulls of coins with the Golden uMax while still having a good shot at finding a gold ring with the settings that I had chosen to detect with. I need to find some new areas to hunt.:detecting:

Curious----Did most of that can slaw you dug come in as hgh tone on the golden umax?

I believe tabman has the old style which would put the can slaw in a low tone, which is why I like the old style. You can dig till you get tired then sort the targets by tone.

If he does have the new style then yes can slaw hits at a high tone.

Nope. Mine is the old audio version and the can slaw was hitting in the foil/nickel range. The sick duck gobble tone. :)

The Silver uMax does a better job telling you that it's can slaw under the coil, but the Golden uMax excels at eliminating pull tabs.

I'd love to have a Silver uMax with a notch feature.:jump:
