Gitterdug this is to you:
Back in 72 I had what I thought was the detector that put every Chinaman in danger of having his dental work detected--the MetroTec. Anyway I was in a deep gully in Vicksbutg looking for a 13" mortor ball and I got this huge signal, perfectly round and about 5 feet across--Had to be a mortor ball. I always dug with a WWII entrenching tool, the kind you can straighten the handle out on. Well I started to dig my mortar ball, dug as far as I could with the shovel folded, straightened the handle and continued to dig. The signal remained Strong and I was laying on my stomach and digging--the hole was at least 3 feet and theMetroTec was still blaring. Only solution--I needed my LHS-long handle shovel--drove the 120 mile round trip and when I got back to my hole it had just about filled with water. So I began to dig a side trench to drain the water--about 1 foot from the side of my hole"CLANK", what the hell, as I continued to dig this big circle of iron it became the iron rim of a 5 foot diameter wagon wheel. Talk about disappointment--I still think about it--sometimes I laugh and sometimes I want to cry. Good hunting. Gene
