OK, all you guys with Edges and Excels..

I got a question. I bought an Edge when they first came out and have been using it as a primary weather permitting. Love it and have been making some pretty nice finds with it but my biggest complaint, albeit minor, is the grip foam. It is just like what came on the
*&^%$ Tejon when they first came out, IE thin junk! Now keep in mind I sold my Excel prior to getting the Edge. Well, I wound up getting another Excel today in a trade and the foam grip on it is night and day better (read: NORMAL) than the one on my Edge. So my question is for those with both detectors, is there a difference in the grip or did I just get a faulty wimpy one on my Edge?

Brad mine is the same. Grip the detector in your hand and you can feel the metal of the rod right thru that wimpy thing they call a grip-GRIPE! The Excel I had was just fine.

Please tell me Fisher isn't playing the same cost cutting games the T company tried. :( Note to Fisher: THIS GRIP THAT YOU SAVED 22 CENTS ON HAS PISSED A GREAT LONG TIME CUSTOMER OFF!!! :ranting: WAS IT WORTH IT????

Brad,

Yeah It's like the cushy seats they use to put on american cars, they feel good at first but after a while the pain sets in!
I thought of calling Fisher, but maybe I'll call ML instead, I like the grip on the Advantage.

Know what ya mean, Tom. I guess my problem is that when I buy a detector, I want and am willing to pay for good quality hardware and fixtures etc. When the Tejon came out, I couldn't believe what they were trying to pawn off on us in order to save a few cents. If this actually wasn't a conscious cost cutting measure on FRL's part it was at the very least an episode of being asleep at the wheel in the assembly process. I've been in a manufacturing environment when people that are only thinking of cost cutting are in the position to make decisions and they have no clue that there may be repercussions that will far outweigh what they "saved". I just really hope that isn't the critical mass mentality at Fisher now.

to watch the forum instead of chasin' skirts.

If there are little things like that Fisher can improve next time, I'll pass it on. Maybe they tried a different grip company? Actually I didn't notice a difference with mine. I'll have to put it side by side with my Excel & see. Or maybe I was lucky & got a thicker Excel one since I have the first EDGE made? I do agree that the softer/thicker the grip the better....many of my other grips on detectors I've had for awhile are all holed/torn, fulla mud, etc. MY Coinstrike one is pretty bad :D
Didn't one fella make his own grip out of a motorcycle one or something? That looked pretty wild, but not sure how hard it is to remove the arm cup to get it there?
PS. Yep, I have been chasing skirts

yeah this grip is like Tom said, the foam is so soft and thin that you can grip it like a limp hand shake and you still just feel the steel rod like there's almost nothing there. REALLY not the correct foam for this application. For a toddlers tricycle, maybe.... but a Fisher quality metal detector, no way! And like I said, I was sensitized by the fact that the Toy company tried this before and I was not quite so taken aback because I'd seen evidence of shoddy parts from them previously. This is not something I've seen from Fisher and I'd hope if this is part of a plan, that they step up and nip it in the bud. (hence the rant) I fully understand the need to do ongoing cost management and savings. They need to be aware and able to analyze the potential risk of cutting quality for the sake of cost. On those other (aftermarket) grips, some of the ones that Specialized bikes use are pretty nice and can be ordered from them. Great ergos, grip factor, and durability. It's very easy to swap them out. If you ever want to do it, email me and I can give you the play by play.

that's the point. I sorta expect it from them but not Fisher. I also know that things are constantly changing but I hope Fisher's approach to quality isn't one of them. Like I said, a grip is a relatively small thing amongst all the materials involved but not so small a thing IN PRINCIPLE. If someone in the company is bean counting to that degree and especially if they are not a detectorist themselves, (and I'd suspect they aren't) I shudder to think about what's ahead. I could very much be wrong (and I REALLY hope I am) so I'll just watch closely how it plays out.

"GIT ER DUN! then :D I wanna see some cool grips.....Folks like doing "mods" don't they??

give Troy a call because he used the exact same grip on the X's. I have an extra that I took off my first X-5 so I'll probably replace "ol wimpy" with that. ;)

and it only took a few minutes to do. But it shoulda been done right the first time from the factory without the need for the consumer to do their re-work. ;)

you can get to work on a mod for me.......I'd like a trigger pinpoint :lmfao:
Post a pic of the grip you used.....

but you're on your own with the trigger switch. Maybe if you bury the hatchet with "their" poster boy, he'll do it for ya. And today's skirt chasing advice: Of course you realize chicks just love Fu-manchu's and Mulletts, right? ;)

that's off an X-5? I always liked the look on that grip. I'm thinking bike or motorcycle shops if folks don't have like 100 other detectors to steal 'em from like you do ;)

PS. I'm chasing a cute little nurse around now :stretcher:
Wish me luck :inlove:

If you're as persistent chasin' the women folk as you are huntin' down old colonial change, you'll be hitched in no time!
