Off Balance

I remember the day I got off balance.....8 months ago, when I got the CTX. Oh, I read the instructions. I am not like some bozos out there. After 39 years of detecting, I KNOW to read directions.

In particular, the Enable GB check box. I always want to enable Ground Balance.......

Over the 8 months since I checked that little box, I have wondered why I wasn't finding silver deep like I had with my trusty ol' ETrac.......I figured it was because I had not had my 100 hours in on the detector.

Then, I thought, at about 80 hours, that maybe my machine was just not a hot machine....i.e., the detecting gods had dictated that my machine would not produce legendary depths of 80 inches on a dime that I hear about with all machines.....LOL I owned a dud.....yep.

a few months ago, a relatively new friend, Jerry, bought a CTX, and he had only been detecting for what is now 8 months....and he is slaying silver.......it shouldn't be happening, but it is. I KNOW I historically find my share, and I was so irritated at my bummer CTX....do I send it in and have it worked over?

So, the other day, I was in conversation with Jerry's main hunting partner who swings an ETrac, and who is getting stomped in silver count.....was it the CTX?

I called Jerry and told him how well he was doing, and that he was doing as well as I was, with minimal experience. I asked him to pull up Exchange 2, and compare his settings with mine. We did, and we were virtually identical up to the point that we compared the enable GB......his was unchecked.......hmmmmmmm

I then researched the button, and discovered that by checking it, I had told the machine I wanted to manually Ground Balance the CTX every time I turned it on. FOR 8 MONTHS, I HAD USED A MACHINE THAT WAS NOT BALANCED.

OMG.......I think of ALL the places I have been to in 8 months, and found items, but nothing deep, UNLESS, it was a larger target. 8 months!

Needless to say, Enable GB is now UNCHECKED, so that my CTX is automatically adjusting the Ground Balance continually.......finally.

Saturday, I will be seeing how the machine is performing differently. I will be hunting several areas that should produce deep old coins.....

I hope I regain my balance, so that I don't feel like such a nube!

Lesson learned....I don't know if anyone else has made the mistake I have, but for gosh sakes, check to make sure!

Gitterdug, regaining balance

Yes my first hunt I had mine setup the way did not find anything , lucky thing I caught it before the 2nd, yes it is something that can be easily over looked.

M/L should have incorporated this info on the status bar. Don't know if it could be fixed with an update or not.

It is pretty lame the way they have it labeled. It should be more like "enable manual balance" or "Auto balance off".

It's no wonder - they are down under!

So, should the GB enable box be checked or not checked? I've had the enable GB box checked since I bought the CTX and have used the GB button on the machine. IF the box is unchecked, then you don't have to use the GB button on the machine when you get to your hunt site? Do I have this thread understood correctly? And is it better to let the machine do the GB or manually GB?

To this date I have not encountered any additional performance using manual GB. When box is unchecked there is no GB required. Happy hunting.

So does that mean the box should be checked so it doesn't GB automately??????

From page 21 of your manual:

Ground Balance (GB) allows you to easily adjust the detector to suit detecting in
highly mineralized ground. In these conditions, correctly adjusted Ground Balance
will help to find deeper targets that might be hidden by ground noise, as well as
helping to stabilize target IDs. Ground Balance is best used in conjunction with
Coin-Ground Target Separation.

Ground Balance should not be enabled in most detecting conditions where ground
mineralization is mild. This includes most beaches, parks and sports grounds.

GB box unchecked.. I haven't encountered any place that I would have needed a manual ground balance.. Soil here here is not hot/mineralized..
Only thing you need to do is choose your search mode you want to use and a noise cancel..
A few I know say that they rarely do a noise cancel, but I always do whether it sounds like I need to or not..
That's just me though..

I agree! I have never needed to use GB, and rarely use noise cancel. Plus the fact that I also don't use Ground/Coin separation that ML recommends when using GB.

OMG! I had this box ticked since I bought detector (july 2012) and I can't complain that I couldn't find a lot, but I'm sure that most of my finds where max 5 inch deep and it had to be big to pick it up. I was allways wondering why I never dig anything deep  I'll check tommorow with a box unchecked. Thanks a lot for this tip....

Thanks Larry for your posting. I also downloaded the manual. Probably 1/2 the questions asked on this forum would have never been asked if Minelab had printed and sent a manual with these great machines. Everyone can't download when a lot of people has no computer. I can just imagine how much more GOLD&SILVER some would be finding. :super:

I have to agree with you Hershey, at least Minelab should make a printed owners manual available to those who would want to buy one. Maybe someone could print one off for you or go to a print shop and have them print one up. I don't think they would be cheap, but it would be a quality manual.

Great food for thought! Excuse me while I chew on this for a while. :)
