OCMD cautionary warning

I’ve hunted Ocean City like once a year for the past several years in the off season..last week I was down for a few days and gotta tell ya the place in my opinion has turned into a real sh*thole.. the happy go lucky is gone.. I went out last Wednesday evening in the rain as the beach was relatively vacant..as the rain lessened people slowly started meandering back onto the beach..there was a group of college age kids I guess smokin weed up at the top of the beach ..well once they started walking one yelled down and asked if I found anything..two dimes I replied..then they were saying something to me but I didn’t listen when the tallest one came running down at me..be look in his eyes I knew he wasn’t coming down to make nice..I’m sure now as I was then he came down to deck me to look tough in front of his friends..when he got within 10’ I shouted for him to stopand not take another step closer while I got a two hand grip on my scoop..I told him I’m out interested in talking to him and needs leave NOW.. I said a few other things that won’t be repeated here at which time he must of figured it might not be worth his life ..he stood for a few seconds then took a few steps away then stopped then the other 5 started coming down but stopped once king pin started walking up the beach..he was verbally threatening me the whole way but his feet were finally moving away from me and made sure to not turn my back till they were gone..... this was like 7pm in the evening with tourists sitting out on there balconies watching the whole thing.. if you go there take a hunting buddy and be prepared to fight for your life.. I’m not gonna lie I was scared as don’t fight very well but once I get started I don’t know when to stop .. I was prepared to sink my heavy scoop into this guys skull ..needless to say I grateful it never got to that point .. unfortunately there seems to be more a higher than normal rate of trouble making buttholes there.. this along with some other issues made me look forward to coming home..

Rehoboth can get very crowded, Atlantic City has it's crime problems yet we never felt threaten on the beach like we did in OCMD ... and the characters on the boardwalk in AC were more about being characters than they were about looking for trouble. Atlantic City was shut down for a long time with covid restrictions and we have not been there since late 2019; we have headed south to Norfolk and Virginia Beach area more often since then, the covid restrictions were not as severe and hotels were open ... but that is probably a longer haul for you.

We are definitely living in different times. I’d love to pull the lever on the way back machine and finish off my time in the past. So , so much better back then. Today’s current affairs are not so good….You got to watch your back more so today than years past!

Myrtle Beach itself, we don't care for much. We like North Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach a lot. Looks like we are moving to Little River, just north of North Myrtle Beach, at the end of the year or early next year. We had an offer on a house accepted and are waiting on inspection reports. Short drive to the beach and parking on the north end is easier to find and 1/4 the price of what it is in the middle of Myrtle Beach.

As for the Norfolk and VA Beach area ... we really enjoy the area around Ocean View in Norfolk. It is on the Chesapeake Bay, has several small beaches along the road with easy parking. Normally wave action is small, relaxing to work and have pulled a fair number of nice pieces of jewelry out of the water with the detector over the years visiting. Has some hot rock areas that you need to deal with, but wife and I really like going there. One of our favorite restaurants has become Jessy's Taqueria in Ocean View ... if you like Mexican food.

From your description of the events it almost sounds to me they mistook your “two dimes” as either hearing something else or it means something different than what you said. We had an incident here several years ago where an older man said something that was also a slang saying for something not so nice in the other guys culture.

Ya,I’m familiar with the Norfolk /VA beach area as I was stationed there 37 years ago..unfortunately I wasn’t into detecting back then...

Glad you are ok BHPA. I’m sure I would of nearly myself. I never go looking for trouble however if it comes knocking, I’m gonna give it all I got. These punk azz college kids like to act tough in front of their friends.... glad you didn’t have to resort to a steel scoop upside the old noggin’.

Was hunting OC good many years ago. Some college guys seen me working my way. Spotted them throwing Pennies ahead of me. Big joke. Well when I got there scooped a couple. Than with my back to them I faked a scoop. Pretended I found a ring. Yeah, was rubbing it , holding it up to the sun, making a big deal of it. Took the headphones off, made like I quit hunting. As I walked by them with a big smile. Silence. Walked up the beach aways and continued my hunt.

I am not surprised to hear this about OC.
Since Maryland does not issue CC permits, or honor permits from other states, it’s not surprising things are getting worse.
I have never been there for that very reason, and do not plan to.
Glad things did not escalate in your case.
