I plan on including myself in this designation until I have at least as much experience as Uncle Willy and I don't plan on living that long anyhow.

Wait until the, "What do I do with all these dirty coins?" posts start in a few months. That always causes a row! Old friends arguing, nearly to blows. Brothers fighting brothers. It's just plain awful.

Keep swinging. Keep digging. Keep posting! PLEASE!

Chris

Chris
Yo Chris, you already know my reply. Shakem and spend em.

Every once in a while at the bar I work at I open a roll of quarters that were obviously found by some other detectorist. It always makes me smile and almost everybody that gets them in change comments (a lot think they're mine) but they still take them.

Chris

I will not return any coin into circulation until it has been thoroughly tumbled, dried, polished, buffed, and passed by inspector number 9. Here we go again!

I'll be at the cow flop (big field with lots of buried treasure.)

Been diggin for 40 years, the fun ain't over yet, I will dig till I die, hopefully in another 40 years. And you all will See what I find. Thanks guys & Gal's for letting me drool over your finds. HH...Jesse.

I never really became a fanatic detectorist until I bought my Ace 250 early last year. I have owned detectors since I was about 12 but I was never serious about it. I had one when I was in the Navy too and used to bring it to the beach (Virginia Beach) but I lost more stuff than I found back then. I had a problem with booze and women I suppose. Not really a problem thinking back.

I looked over your old posts and was most happy to see you found gold US coins. Man would I love to find just one of those. I need to expand my hunting areas to spots that will produce older coins.

That's what I do to them also Chris. Why not? They could come back at you in change some day and I know I wouldn't want a nasty one in my pocket.....ehehehe......

Hey,
We just clean them up as best we can and use them in our local corner shop.
It's funny to see their reactions as they inspect them to make sure their not fakes.
That helps to make this hobby fun too.

:twodetecting:
I like your thinking. Less time cleaning, more time detecting.....

I just like to fuss with them nowm and tumble clean them. I didnt used to - I was in the awhitser camp. Brush em off and spend them...that was my motto.

Then I got a cheap tumbler on ebay and I was in it, then. There is little as satisfying as the sound of a tumbler rolling your coins clean and shiny. Then you can sit and roll them, and count them, and weigh them and ring your hands over them in avaricious glee...

I am a hoarding miser by nature as you may have guessed, so I keep them all rolled and tidy in my treasure chest. Woe to anyone in my family who even thinks about snagging a few rolls - even my wife knows better. Oh, sooner or later, I will cash them in and buy something. Maybe a gold coin or a coil or something like that. I recall one year I tallied up $244 in coins alone, so they do add up. And when the season warms, I do almost all water hunting, then I dont normally have to clean them.

But they all go in the chest, which grows heavier as time progresses. Ill probaby die clutching the thing...

I shake them off in my sand scoop, run them through the coin machine at the bank and take the money and run. I use it ot buy gold and silver coins. coinmetamorphisis as John says:clapping:

I use vinegar and salt to clean my coins. LOL 98 cents for vinegar to coin 32 cents of coins, not really.
I like to clean them up a bit and make sure I am not paaing any wheaties away. I am saving right now to
recoup the $150.00 I spent on the Ultra 1000.

Funny stuff! I turn All my finds into cash and put it in the bank. I am going to die clutching my bank book! (I've used that line before.)

I sell some of my really good finds to myself. I know that is sort of a lame way to do it but there is a difference between a silver Washington Quarter in my metal detecting chest and a silver Washington Quarter in a 2x2 in a binder. At least in my mind there is. Sort of like having my cake and eating it too. The real upside is I pay myself top dollar!

On the clad note, I tumbled a load of coins this weekend and when I get enough rolled to partially fill a mint sack I'll put it in my MD account to earn interest. If you do intend to tumble your coins don't let them pile up. Do it as you go or it will become a chore! I learned that the hard way last year.

Chris

I like the concept of selling your good finds back to yourself. You must be an accountant! I pretty much do the same thing, at least I reckon things that way. Everything is profit/loss deal with me, and that extends to my detecting endeavors. SO far, after all these years, I'm still firmly fixed in the loss column...

I have a minor in accounting but I'm afraid I've forgotten most of it. I like to think I'm in the black but I don't keep a balance sheet. I am a lot less thorough tracking expenses. Rosco Bookbinder and I had a heated discussion about this last year. He was firmly on the have fun side (as am I) but I argued it adds a dimension to the hobby for me to keep score. I drew his name in the Christmas Gift Exchange and he sent me a nifty book to display finds in which I really like and use. It contains some of my cooler coins, relics, and jewelry but I paid myself for them after I put them in there. That money went to the bank and I'll spend it someday.

Nice to see there is another one like me out there!

Chris

A lot of people will tell you this is a hobby, so you shouldn't keep score, or set goals or anything that smacks of serious intent. I disagree. If these same people were into hang gliding, I guarantee theyd take it pretty serious!

And why shouldnt I? I like to do it and it adds that other dimension you refer to. I keep a running tally of my scavengings and when someone asks, I can wow them with a real figure...'So far I'm up to $173.13." People like precise fgures when it comes to money.

I also conservatively appraise the jewelry finds from my fresh water hunting. Last year, I scavenged what amounted to $900-950 worth of replacement value in rings and bracelets. My friend Ross is a jeweler and gives me the straight skinny on this stuff. The bullion value was, of course, much less, but that was still substantial (and now with gold topping a $1000/ounce, that has risen).

So yes there is another out there like you. Call it a serious AND fun pastime and you wont be off the mark.

2007-$1063.12 (Started in April with my old Bounty Hunter, Added Ace 250 in June, Added GTI 2500 in September)
2008-$87.32 (14 Hunts)
Interest-$33.25 (That includes a $25.00 bonus for opening an on line account at ING.)

Total-$1183.69

That includes silver coins and gold/silver jewelry at melt value or sale value for those pieces that I actually sold. Photo is page one of my trophy book. I do like to show it around.

Also if somebody asks me if I've paid for my detectors I usually say just barely, but I do have 2 like new, perfect detectors that have very strong resale value too. The old Bounty Hunter has seen better days. I still have her but she's not working like she should.

Thanks for the nice Easter chat!

Chris

Very good totals - much better than mine, as I have laid off since the autumn.
I like the idea of actually depositing your coinage. I should try that instead of sitting on my treasure chest!

When I found this forum I had pretty good detecting fundementals. What this place did for me was motivate me. A lot! At that point, I was content to have $2.50 clad days and then I realized there was a lot more to find. I started looking for new sites and I started finding gold and silver. I was recently motivated by some of the newer posters here. They took me back to my early posting days and I felt hungry again.

That said. The only detectorist that I compete with is me. First, I really want to beat my 2007 totals. Probably, gonna need a couple of gold rings. Second, I think I would like to try for 10,000 coins this year. I put my chances at 50/50 on that second goal. I have a cool goal in the back of my mind for 2009 too. Can't really do it until 2009.

Please tell me you don't drink Irish Whiskey. It's like having a conversation with myself.

Chris

My goals this year are

- 50 coins per day goal when dirt hunting.
This is thanks to Les. Since I got onto this idea, Ive really enjoyed detecting more.

- This year I want to find a mans gold ring in the water.
Ive found plenty of womens rings and a few silver mens rings, but never a gold one.

- One silver SLQ.
I have yet to find one of these.

I do the five day a week work thing, nowadays, so I wont have the time I once did. On alternating days, I also exercise to keep "tuned up," so that wont let me do much during the week. On the weekends during the seaon, I do all I can with fresh water hunting. Not much coinage, but it sure kicks up the jewelry count.

As for the Irish Whiskey - love it. Used to be my sole libation, with Bushmills my favored choice. Now it's just roasted malt beers and a glass of red wine each day. Gotta watch out for myself, you know.

I like Powers. Working man's whiskey. Red Breast or Middletons on a very special occaision. Bushmills or Jameson in a pinch. Tullamore Dew is great if you can find it.

I got turned on to Powers about 5 years ago by a retired fireman, now great friend. I am sipping a nice big one right now. Very smooth. I eBayed a few items to a guy in Ireland last year and we got to talking whiskey. He said his parents always had a bottle of Powers in the house and it was used as medicine. I told him I would probably be sick a lot!

Chris

Edit: I found two SLQs in the same whole and then none since!
