Not hearing very much about new 705..is it good ??

The higher frequency coils perform better on salt water beaches. DD coils cover more ground with each swath. And DD coils can be operated with a higher sensitivity setting. But don't set it too high as it will chatter all the time. Setting it in the teens should settle it down and still get respectible depth. There are 3 choices of DD coils at 18.75 kHz. The 6-inch round, the 6 X 10 Elliptical and the 10.5 round. Although the 6 X 10 Elliptical is a DD at 18.75 kHz, it is only water-resistant and not water-proof. However, I've not heard of anyone having a problem with it after they run a bead of silicon around the lip where the cover adjoins the coil. And a bit of silicon around the cable where it enters the coil. The 6-inch will seem like it takes forever to cover the beach. And the 10.5 is a bit heavy for some. My choice would be the elliptical! Regardless, consider using the Beach tracking mode to help compensate for changes between wet and dry areas. JMHO HH Randy

Thanks Randy, I did not know that. I wonder if the HF coils perform better only on wet saltwater sand or on dry salt sand too?

Also if the HF DD's have a great advantage or only a marginal advantage over the MF DD coil in wet saltwater sand?

The 10.5" HF DD is heavier but it WILL go deeper on coin sized objects than the 6 x 10 HF DD in the beach sand. That IMO is why I would prefer to use the 10.5".

I suppose none of the HF DD advantage applies to fresh water beaches as the 10.5" MF DD or 9" LF Concentric will work just a good, although the DD's handle beach sand mineralization and black sand better than Concentrics AND the HF will pick up very small fine gold jewelry better than the MF or LF.

The BBS and FBS machines are deeper than ALL single frequency VLF's in wet saltwater sand BUT not in dry salt sand and they have a slow sweep speed. I would use my 5 kHz Musketeer Advantage with a round 15" WOT DD with my Doc's Swingy Thingy for both, dry salt sand and fresh water dry and wet sand to cover the most ground at the most depth on coin sized objects. Although nothing wrong with the X-Terra's with DD coils which work great also.

The 705 (or any of the X-Terra's) operate much the same other single frequency VLF units operate in the wet salt sand beach area . . . . you will need to drop your sensitivity, hunt with the coil an inch or so off the beach and hunt perpendicular to the water to reduce the chatter and falsing from the black sand / salt water. Can the 705 be used in these conditions? Sure but your detection depth will be limited (again, not uncommon with single frequency detectors) and it will be noisier than the dry sand. If you are in areas such as southern Florida with white sand beaches, it will be better but if you have black sand and salt water, it will chatter . . . . Double D coil or concentric coil.

If you are planning to buy the 705 specifically for hunting ocean beaches in the wet sand region, I'd recommend you posting a question looking for feedback from users that have tried that in that application on the Beach Hunting forum and see what response you get back.

I've done well in the dry sand, especially with the faster sweep speed but in the wet sand, there are other detectors that will handle the conditions with better depth and less noise.

I have the Xterra 305 and it rocks it ids reall well its battery life is great and in less than one month ive found 3 rings plenty of quarters dimes and nickels and one nice wheat penny and a us dollar coin plus some foriegn coins.I also have an xterra 70 and like the Xterra 305 better. It just seems more stable and smoother.Dont really care about 3klhz coil .Only like higher frequency coil and 7.5 standard wich works real well.

The 705 is really good. Fairly easy to use and the videos on MOLTV are very good explaining settings.

I just got my 705 last night. I want to read through the manual a few times to get used to the functions of the different controls before I take it out detecting. I had an E-Trac but I found it too confusing with all the different sounds and numbers and I dug a lot of Rusty Nails with it. I'll put all the blame on the operator ( Me ) , I guess it was just too much machine for me to handle. I'll give you my thoughts on the 705 when I get out detecting with it in a few days from now. I definately think it's better suited for me than the E-Trac was. I went out detecting twice with a guy that I met on a detecting forum that visits my area once in a while and he kicked my butt bad both times we detected together with his X-Terra 70.
