Not a good first day with the X50...

Bob I couldn't GB mine in the wet salty sand either and it is difficult to GB in my yard(bad soil). I get pretty good depth anyway but I wonder if I should have just got the X-30.

Hello Padigger,

I am always working on the DRY sand.

So I tried to GB my X-Terra 50 a couple of times but I never understood what everybody seemed to worry about. I didn't have much success in GB the unit + I pick up a lot of stuff, so why bother ?

So, I for one am very happy with my X-Terra 50, Padigger.

But NO pictures today, didn't hunt, for once. Tomorrow, on the contrary...

When those minelab phones that are spec'd at 100 ohms are connected to a Minelab, you end up with a pair of 100 ohm speakers in series. This gives you 200 ohms! Not a low impedance at all.

I have tried my RAT phones plugging the 2 black (stereo)ring in the detector and get NO sound at all....While turning the cord around and plugging the single ring (Mono ?)connector atleast gets some audio,,,,,,,it is still weak ,,,requiring a detector volume setting of 25 to be audible,and in noisy areas,,,even 30 is faint......I liked the fact that RAT phones have a DB rating of about 28 ? To keep outside noise out,,,,but like you said Bill,,,,,RAT phones must have an issue with Minelab machines......Tsk......Too bad,,as they work great on my other machines.........
Minuites ago I tried a set of KOSS UR-30's I had laying around that ARE recomended for Minelab use.I got ALLOT better audio volume ,and quality with them,and I will be using them from now on with my Xterra.........I hadn't used them because they let too much outside noise in 22 DB rating ?
One thing is for sure,,,,,,,,,,,even my RAT phones have better audio,and fit ALLOT better than the ones furnished with my Xterra 70 that I purchased from Kellyco..
I have heard that TROY Pros ? work good ..

which have the following specs:

Frequency Response: 20-17,000 Hz
Impedance: 60 ohms
Sensitivity: 98 dB SPL/mW

UR-30 specs:

Frequency Response 18 - 20000 Hz
Impedance 100 ohms
Sensitivity 101 dB/mW

Pretty close overall with the 30's having almost twice the impedance, but also listed 3dB greater sensitivity.

But impedance varies with frequency,

as does sensitivity.

So in most instances, you're just going to have to try them, like you have done.

But I have not tried them or (until I tested them today)My UR-30's.........I was a little hard headed in trying to stick with my RAT phones.......
Now that I know.......I will try both my UR-30,and my TD-80 KOSS phones to see which ones I like better......I can see already that I may be partial to the UR-30,because they can cover my Big Ears better ,,LOL........

I use the Troy Pros on my Explorer and find they have excellent volume and being I am hard of hearing I don't even have to use a amp like some headphones. I use the Timberwolfs on my Sovereign which works the best for me and on my X-Terra i have been using the Uniprobe as I need something to find those small targets the X-Terra gets. With the Uniprobe the volume is great for me, I had got a set of the Rat phones a while back and I didn't care for the tone or the volume they had, did like the idea of replaceable cords that anyone could change.
With the Troy Pros I find the cable is heavy duty and the best I have seen, you don't have any switch to switch either for mono or stereo as they work fine on either one. They are very comfortable and block out the background noise very well.
I don't remember trying them on my X-Terra and i will have to try and see how the volume is, but I bet they will be good as every Minelab I have tried them on they work good.

but merely illustrative of how impedance & sensitivity varies with frequency.

The Ratphone's web site lists the impedance of the various models as in the neighborhood of 300 ohms. Therefore if connected in series would yield around 600 ohms. In a quick perusal the Ratphone's web site does not make any mention as to whether this is the case or not with Minelab product.

However Minelab is mentioned in several places, more than any other manufacturer, with a mention of modifications needed to optimise response. Therefore, there appears to be issues Ratphones is trying to address with Minelab compatibility.

The Xterra's in particular use 4 AA batteries, this is not a lot of voltage for driving audio levels if one considers that the same output is used to drive the loudspeaker(a low impedance device), and then more than likely routed through a current limiting resistor(more voltage drop), to a reactive high impedance load, which when considered with the current limiting resistor forms an RC+X series filter.

This is all wonderful circuit behavior conjecture/discussion, but the bottom line is, if I plug one set of headphones in and it works better than another set on "my" detector, then that's what I am going to use, whether Koss, Sony, Grado, Ratphones, Troy or Kellyco likes it or not.

Verdict was........Using the TD-80's on my Tejon,(tejon has no volume control),and I will use the UR-30's on my Xterra,,,,,,,has better volume (to MY ears)and keeps outside noise out better than my TD-80's..........Just My Opinion........

Bill,
My point is that home stereo phones like the koss are true stereo and are rated in ohms per side. Since minelabs put true stereo phones in series, you have to double the spec.
However this is not the case for metal detecting heaphones that are typically always mono (except Nautalus versions). No mater what machine you use, all the major brands that are mono will have the speakers in parralel.
Many detector brands follow though with this and tell you only the speaker impedance which can be confusing because not you have to half the spec.

So basically,

100 ohm True stereo phones (Koss)on a Minelab (and Garret) = 200 ohms;

100 ohm True stereo phones on any OTHER detector = 50 oms;

Popular 150 ohm speaker detector phones on ANY machine = 75 ohms;

Troy phones (100 ohm speakers) on ANY machine = 50 ohms;

The 300 ohm brand spoke of has 600 ohm speakers. On ANY machine is 300 ohms. (Not 600!). No mater which way the cord. I am intentionally not mentioning the brand because I have association and am not yet a sponser here.

The intent that Minelab had was to wire their output jack so that stereo phones from your home end up in series, because putting what sometines could be as low as 16 ohm speakers in parallel would end up at 8 ohms which is too low if they wired their jacks like Tesoro etc., so on a Minelab they can get 32 which is useable.
What they have accomplished is that users need to try a few brands to hear what sounds good for them. Not to mention Minelab has several very different output circuits.
