Not a good first day with the X50...

Do I start with the bad news or the bad news? You guys are gonna think I'm some kind of nut.

Volume... turned up to 20, volume on RAT phones maxed out... the thing doesn't get loud enough for me, and I'm not especially old or deaf.

Couldn't get what I considered a decent hit (clear repaeatable signal) with the thing. I had better luck with the CoinStrike as far as clear repeatable hits.

A shallow 36-39 turned out to be an old aluminum jar lid 3" wide and 5" deep. Next "good" target was a 39-42 (quarter or penny me thinks)... pull tab ring at 4-5". So far I'm not impressed.

Next target, shallow, 33-36, I'm thinking penny... pull out probe screwdriver and accidentally stab into the screen of the X50, putting a nice hole in the thin plastic and dinging the harder plastic underneath. Great... how much is that gonna cost me.

So, completely disappointed and discouraged, I throw the thing in the trunk and come here to vent my frustration.

I thought this was supposed to be fun.

Stab the screen and I am not be sarcastic! I really want to know?

Set detector on ground next to you. Squat down to dig target. Pull probe out of back pocket and bring around to in front of you. Hit screen of tall new detector (used to lower sitting Fisher). Bammo, stab the screen. Not so hard to do. I've stabbed my CZs before, but they don't break.

both targets you dug will give that same reading on my sovereign. it's disappointing but some junk reads just like coins. should run the volume at max on the detector and adjust the headphones to a level you like.

In regards to the volume and head phones. I have 2 pairs of Killer B headphones; have an older pair with the single volume knob and a new pair with the dual knobs. I'm not that hard of hearing either and even with the phones on full volume and the X-Terra maxxed out with its volume, its still faint to my ears.

It's still the best mid range target ID machine I've ever seen though. I loved the Fisher CoinStrike and it reminds me of it in alot of ways which is a good thing. There is no other detector on the market that could have been more perfect for my wife and as a perfect backup (or even primary in some cases) machine for myself.

I am very hard of hearing (80-110% gone)and use the Uniprobe that are built into the headphones and I had no problem with the X-Terra for volume. On my Sovereign I find the Timberwolfs work the best for me and on my Explorer I use a amplifier and a set of Troy Pros. I think I tried the Timberwolfs on the X-Terra too and they too were loud enough for me.
I would try a different set of headphones and make sure the volume of the detector is set all the way up too.

the X50 has separate volume for the speaker and headphones. If you adjusted the volume without the headphones plugged in, then only the speaker volume was adjusted. Make sure the phones are plugged in, then adjust the volume. Being a newbie on this machine it might be something you overlooked.

Two other possibilities:

1. Ratphones appear to have a patch cord connection method where one end has a single black ring insulator and this is the Mono end. The other with two black ring insulators is the Stereo end. This is the end to plug into the detector.

2. The manufacturer Ratphone lists an impedance of 270 ohms which is quite high, whereas Minelab shows two accessory headphones on their website listed at 32 ohms & 100 ohms. Therefore one can assume the output impedance of the Minelab's will be quite low, which means low voltage w/ high current. Ratphone also specifically mentions shall we say uummm issues with Minelab headphone outputs. There are techniques to measure these outputs to discover the impedance, but I've never had reason to perform the exercise.

So my suggestion is to try lower impedance headphones, say something in the 60 to 100 ohm range would probably be a good match. Try to borrow a pair, or try at a dealer so you don't end up wasting money.

Nick, I have used the x50 for only a couple of hours and I am seeing the same problem. I use Killer B's and have the volume on the detector maxed out and the headphone volume turned way up. I can barely hear the threshold in all metal. This must be a design flaw as I have very good hearing and I am having a difficult time ground balancing because of the lack of any sort of volume. Saturday I was hunting in windy conditions and all the signals sounded weak. I could still hear everything and the detector worked flawlessly, but I can see where you are coming from. I found 25 coins in the hour or so I hunted and the detector ID'd most all of the coins correctly. I was thinking the volume problem was me, but apparently it wasn't. R.L.

What is this all about ????

I have been using my X-Terra 50 for 3 months and it is SUPER. My only problem is I seem to be breaking headphone cables. Again and again... On the Koss, the blue Maz. I have broken at least 4 or 5 cables, at this moment.

Now I use a RAT PHONE since this one has a 90

Did you adjust the volume for the headphones in the menu screen like Barnacle Bill mentioned in his post ? If not then, there is your problem unless you have a set of weak headphones because my 50 and 30 both will blow my ears out on full volume with coin targets less than 5" deep.
I use Timberwolfs but any of these headphones mentioned will do a good job for the most part.
Sorry to hear about your screen damage, don't think I've ever had that happen to me but I did have my Mastiff run over me while I was down digging a target in the back yard one day :)
She thought I was wanting to play, it completely rolled me over and I smashed the lower shaft of a brand new Explorer in the process so I feel your pain.
I suggest digging ONLY the targets that lock solid without bouncing until you get familiar with the x-terra.
Y'all have me wondering about a threshold sound, UNLESS you're talking about hearing it while ground balancing, otherwise it's a silent search detector and the threshold is never heard while hunting and if so maybe it's some kind of electrical interference and need to do a noise cancel ? Hopefully, you're not hunting in the pinpoint mode ? Remember that everytime you go to the menu to change a setting that you have to push pinpoint again to bring the detector back into hunt mode.
Don't give up on the x-terra, it's well worth the time to learn it.

I will try it again, not very easy to put this one up for sale with the hole over the display! Any ideas on what I should do about that? I'm going to put a piece of tape over it for the time being. Sure would be nice if I could just order a part for it?

The RATphones work fine on my CZ, in fact, I turn the CZ volume down to 2 with them. I did make sure I adjusted the volume on the X50 with the headphones connected as well.

I have a pair of Jolly Rogers I will try next time and see if that improves the audio. I'm sure I have an old pair of Calrads somewhere too, so I can try to dig those out to try if I need. I'll keep you posted.

Dear RLOH,

I don't think there IS a threshold on the X-Terra.

Well, I don't care, I am finding a lot with it, so... NEVER change a winning team !

I have to max out the audio volume also. I don't think there is a problem with the X50. It's probably with the headset not being at the right impedance. Headphones are probably made to save on battery power. I feel that if I got lower impedance headphones they would be louder.

I have six land detectors and the RATS work great on all of them. But going from detector to another you might have to switch plugs end to end.

Bob, I know you does get a lot of finds, but if you are using the x 50 check out your manual, me thinks there is a threshold on it just from seeing the video, the difference between the 30 & 50! Too d.... bad I don't own one yet!

............

If I told you I NEVER ground balance my X-Terra, would you ?

Tried it a few times, it doesn't seem to "work" (for me, that is) but I keep finding stuff nevertheless.
So I gave up "bothering" (hahahaha) about it all together.

To me, the X-Terra is a very simple = GOOD machine : switch it on and start digging. For a few hours a day. For a few days a week. For a few weeks a month.

I don't discriminate, either. The only reason I don't find gold is because I don't dig EVERYTHING.

But then everything in life is a choice and I am happy with mine.
