Stirling, glad to here you are OK. I hunt Daytona now and again, I was there today for a couple hours. Where did this take place? I hunt around the Hilton if I hunt at night.

I was cut by a thug trying to rob my wife's business a few years back, I know how you feel at this time, but it will go away with time. I am much more aware of my surrounding now when I am out and about.
HH.

Not into the gun thing but i can surely understand why some want to carry,...what about something like pepper spray or a stun gun thing?

Pepper spray might be a good alternative but you have to be pretty close to use it effectively.

A stun gun requires you to be able to actually touch the attacker. I don't like the idea of getting that close.

A round from a .38 revolver, even if you just shoot it into the sand, should be enough to send vermin running. If they press the attack, at close range even sloppy shooting should wound them bad enough to make them stop.

I may sound like a broken record, but please be carefull about dispensing this sort of advice. Warning shots are NOT a great plan and blasting "vermin" with sloppy shots can land you in more worry than you'll bargain for.

IF YOU DRAW A GUN WITH THE INTENT TO SHOOT SOMEONE, ONE CARDINAL RULE APPLIES:
1. Your life, or that of another person, is in grave peril.

Hoping to scare someone with warning shots, Shooting wildly, or anything less than life threatening peril is NOT justified cause.
Get some training.

If that doesn't work then do it again, repeat as necessary until he is cured of his malicious intent.

One of the pluses of living in Bermuda is that there are almost no guns on an island where they are illegal. It makes for a very level playing field.

And now back to hunting,

BDA:cool:

me. Small, light weight, 10 plus 1 round, and enough knock down to keep 'em down using corbon rounds.

I have guns but I don't carry because I live in the communist state of California and can't get a permit without paying into someone's campain fund or "having a good enough reason" (like wanting to live through an attack isn't good enough)

I looked around and began to take some training in Chinese martial arts. Without getting into too much stuff about it I learned alot. You'd be surprised all the little things you can do to with little effort to hurt someone. One of the things that kinda shocked me was how I was shown how to pop eyes out of eye sockets and how to use a common ball point pen to defend myself from attack.

I'm not bashing anyone who wants to use a gun or any other weapon to defend themself. I say just don't limit your options. Sometimes you won't have that gun and then what are you going to do? I always carry a ball point pen though :)

PS, I had to use pepper spray once when a road rager attempted to punch me through my open car window at a stoplight. Luckily I noticed him running up to "greet" me and I calmly grabbed my spray. As his punch came into the car and I moved my head out of the way of the fist I countered with this pepper spray. I hit him good in the face with it and he went down to his knees screaming but the spray blew back into my car and got me too. I couldn't see but managed to see enough to pull into a KFC a few feet from the intersection and run into the bathroom to put water on my face. I don't use the stuff anymore..

Target acquisition is of the utmost importance when you decide you must fire. Knowing what is behind your target is as important as deciding to eliminate the threat. Today's bullets are quite capable of penetrating the threat, then passing right through the threat and wounding or killing an innocent bystander. KNOW WHAT IS BEHIND YOUR TARGET .. Warning shots should only be used in the movies and old westerns. Remember, shot to eliminate the threat, and only when you or someone else is in fear for their life.. Larry (The Palm Bay Pirate)

I went out last night at the local swimming beach. This area has had some vandalizim issues as of late. So what could I do to try to be aware of my surrounding.

1) Only turn on my light when needed for a target, use the red lamp as much as possible so as not to bring attention to myself.
2) Hunt with my back to the water and work out in a small grid so as to not leave much room for a back attack. Go back to the water without detecting and work the next line. This way I can always keep a good look out while digging as I am facing most of the area that I can be approched from.
3) Hunt with only one ear cup on so I can here what is going on around me better. I wish I could have a single cup headset for every unit I own.
4) At least carry a big scoop or a sharp digging to for some kind of possible protection.
5) Hunt a buddy if possible, but we know this is difficult.
6) Always let someone know where you will be and what time to be expected back.
7) Oh ya hunt during the day if possible.

getting hit over the head is the gravest extreme! Next step paralization or death.

And using a public beach in a lawfull manner isn't placing yourself in harmsway!

Any other arguments?

Untrue. Head whacking in general is not fatal, thus not "gravely extreme." It classifies as assault, unless it can be proven the intent was to kill. And as you might expect, prosecution for the bad guys you plug will prove it wasn't.

And using a public beach in a lawful manner isn't placing yourself in harmsway!
Untrue again, at least not for a carrying citizen. Remember this was centered around legal carry of concealed firearms. Most beaches close after sundown, at least according to law enforcement folks. Those that do, especially in tourist and inhabited areas, are normally posted to that effect.

Much has been said about being aware of your surroundings. That extends to more than just being sure you can see the attack coming, so as to grip your scoop harder...

I'll just say I'm glad you are ok, you were not at fault. This in an effort to avoid dragging work into my hobby.

I was nighthunting over the weekend and had this post in the back of my mind. I came around a pier pilon and a guy is running straight for me at full speed. I crouched and reared my Excal in my right hand and was ready to hit him with everything I had. He ran by me laughing and then his buddies came around the corner....just surfers who were horsing around chasing each other on the beach. Later on I helped them look for their lost keys. I now carry a very good flashlight and a Walmart Air Horn. It sits nicely in my left cargo pocket with the top (and button) sticking out. It is loud enough to take a coat of paint off of a moving vehicle.

:rofl::rofl::thumbup:

a lethal weapon is a leathal weapon. someone might be going to jail but i'm thinking it won't be the guy who hits me over the head.

also i've been in ems for 15 yrs and we always treat head trauma as if it were life threatening, no exceptions. and the reason is IT IS!!!

we obviously have completely different opinions on this matter. i hope i never read about you being assaulted and beaten to death on your favorite beach and in return i hope you never read about me being in prison for defending myself while under attach.

Unfortunately, dude, your average prosecuting legal eagle out for a case doesn't necessarily see it that way. Remember whose side he serves, foremost.

We obviously have completely different opinions on this matter.
Not as much as you think. I believe the individual has the right to defend himself when life is threatened - and a duty to do so. I also believe in the right to carry a firearm if one chooses to do so...responsibly and without bravado. I am a certified expert marksman, and damn good shot, thanks to military and civilian training and am both licensed to, and DO, carry.

Since there's no such thing as a free ride, I also believe in the concept of citizen-soldiers, who also have the duty to participate in the defense of the country through well-regulated militia service. That's the Constitution... although there is nothing about foolish or ill-thought out behavior in there for those times when one is going armed.

All that vigilante, Rambo/cowboy claptrap we love to spout is just that, a lot of hoodoo best purged from your thoughts - or at least, best kept to oneself.

i hope i never read about you being assaulted and beaten to death on your favorite beach and in return i hope you never read about me being in prison for defending myself while under attach.
Thank you. I can fairly assure you against the first - and I shouldn't wonder at the latter.
