Nighthunters Beware

"It will never happen to me" How many times have we said those words? Last night at 10:30pm I was leaving the beach after nighthunting for about an hour. It was dark at that section of the beach because of the sea turtle nesting season. I was leaving the beach and was walking up the driving ramp towards my jeep. Without any warning, I was hit over the head by punks looking to rob an "easy" mark. I went down to the ground and was really "woozy" & seeing stars. Somehow I didn't loose consciousness and was able to start swinging my long handled scoop. I guess that they weren't expecting their victim to fight back so they ran off.
I was able to call 911 on my cellphone and stumble to a local hotel and wait until help arrived. At the hospital the test showed that my injuries are minor (slight concussion and neck strain).
What did I learn? IT CAN HAPPEN TO ME (and YOU). And that I WILL start "carrying" after I get the concealed weapons permit.

NO weapon will do you good if you're not constantly aware of your surroundings.

I agree with this - so do the instructors at the concealed carry courses I undertook. In fact, they told us in the first 5 minutes that if you think a weapon will keep you out of trouble, to leave the class.

I know you are hurting physically and feel violated emotionally. Been there done that. I know you were pursuing your own private happiness and didnt ask to be attacked. Understood, too.
But think about where you were, when and what you were doing at the time and you'll see that there was fault on both sides of the assault.

The odds of finding yourself in a face off go way up in the middle of the night. Especially in the summer, when statistically, assaults, robberies and crimes against persons skyrocket. Being that it was a touristy area of a beach town doesnt help matters.

Being aware of your surroundings is one thing and an important part of the self-protection equation. Understanding your actions and where you place yourself at any moment is still another. As a concealed weapons permitee, you are in possession of deadly force - to be used only in the "gravest extreme." Placing yourself in situations that predicate violence can possibly bode ill for you. Be mindful of that.

try to find a frend to detect whith as well , some places i just dont go and ,the youth are whitout a concience hope you recover bro God will avenge them its his job but you are right to defend yourself i had to defend myself against a 260 pound dude swinging at me i grabed his long hair and threw him to the ground and ran he could not grab my hair its cru cut im only 125 pounds sometimes force is all the wicked understand like hitler we just had to kik his ass

And everything is OK. My state of awareness will be hightened now! It was already pretty high, but now will be soaring! No more night interviews for sure, even with tourists. The 11LBer will be cocked and ready for battle. Can you imagine what kind of damage that unit could do to a thug? Hopefully they won't have guns! Maybe I'll start carrying my flare gun again. Been leaving it in the gear bag. Need some fresh 12GA rounds. Burns a nice phosphorus hole right through the attacker and the rounds are submersible. Yes, I have fired rounds after submersion and they still burn! Hopefully it will never come to that, but I will not be violated! GH

As a cop in Florida, I am constantly on the look out for trouble..It sucks that we have to divert our attention away from our hobby in the name of self preservation..I was teated for skin cancer a year ago and prefer to hunt at night so as to not aggravate my skin problems. My wife freaks even if I'm a few minutes late (she always fears the worse) and yes, I am faith to call her a couple of times while I'm out.. Be absolutely aware of your surroundings. Watch out for the "tourist" who gains your attention by asking about your finds while their accomplice attacks from behind. If you carry a firearm, you best be able to articulate very well why you used deadly force and what the attacker did to put you in fear for your life. Unless you've found a chest full of gold or silver, I seriously doubt that your finds for the night are worth prison or death. Hunt safe, Larry (the Palm Bay Pirate)

I'm glad to hear you're alright and that you were able to be alert enough to drive them off.

I prefer hunting the beaches when there are few people around as well, so I've been out at night many times. I'm going to rethink that now unless I can find someone to go with and stick to going out early in the morning just as the sun is rising.

It's a real shame that the world is not a safe place for anyone.

That is just wrong:

you'll see that there was fault on both sides of the assault.

Doesn't work that way. Certainly not in the legal sense. Not in a moral sense either. No sane, moral or ethical argument could be made for blaming the victim of a violent assault for being assaulted.

Disgusting.

Stainless Airweight Speer Gold Dot loads......No one says you have to bump someone off but you have a right to protect yourself.....Geo

Much, much lighter than stainless steel and still corrosion resistant.

dangerous in parts too many transient lowlife scum looking to jack anybody for some drug money.
I carry during the day over there.

Of course I dont blame the victim and Im glad he's okay, and didnt get harmed. But I also hope I jarred him into seeing the precarious position he placed himself in. THIS is why I always recommend you NOT do detecting at night on the beach alone.

Too, thos hig and mighty moral arguments you tout go out the window in court - it happens in this day and age... sorry. Especially if he is carrying a weapon and becomes a shooter.

Prosecution WILL bring up the fact that he had a gun and went out at night in harms way. I mean consider, the middle of the night around the hotel district?

It has happened before. I said what I did in the hope that no one pins their freedom on mere moral and/or righteous arguments. We have crossed the line into litigious license long ago. Lots of people say:
"Id rather be judged by ajury of my peers than carried by 12"... which has a nice bravado ring to it - until they find themselves in that situation. There is far more to this nowadays than standing on morality and packing heat

For more on this matter, read Massad Ayoobs book, "In the Gravest Extreme." It'' surprise you

...and right when the next low tide is upon us...
2 mornings away, then 4 straight for dark hunting.
I'm more scared about keeping the "earmuffs" on and not hearing if someone comes up from behind right on the beach...
