Sure, no one's going to be able to read the dates on coins with nothing but moon-light, but a penlight could be brought out for just when you need it for that. As for a continaul headlamp, I disagree with you though. Your eyes will end up becoming to "just that beam of light", and you'll grow blind to everything else around you. In addition to just being a "beacon" for everyone to see, and they ask themselves "gee, what's that guy doing over there?" I guess if a person's vision is so poor, then moon and star-light are not enough to walk around, then sure, maybe they need light "just to walk in the night". But for me (and I suspect most people), they can walk just fine, see enough not to bump into trees, etc... And I see enough to cover my hole, stomp it back, ruffle it, etc... The only time I turn on my light is to see what coin I just dug up.

I never used a light with it on ALL the time! I mounted a mercury switch to the headband (on the side of it) with a nylon wrap around clamp and one PoP-rivet so I could tilt it at different angles. When adjusted right the light only came on when I looked almost straight down or bent over, in those days LED lights weren't around, I just used the front part out of a DD flashlight and wired a DD battery holder on to the switch and put the pack in my pocket. This worked very well.
With an LED head lamp you just have to switch it on and off, or from red to regular. If you leave it on all the time it also draws bugs really bad.

Also, if you have a white search coil or a way to make the top of the coil white will help because they are much easier to see.

Well, what the heck! I dug this rig out and took some pictures of it! just keep in mind that I made this in 1982!
You can tell by the pictures how I put this together,
Some strapping connected together with two wide pieces of elastic,
The front inside of a flash light that I glued the lens onto the reflector,
The reflector had a metal flange on it that I attached a little metal arm to for a mount, the ground wire was also connected to it,
The plastic part where the bulb went into had a little copper tab for the battery contact, I soldered the positive battery lead to that,
The mercury switch I took out of an old house thermostat and fit it into some sort of rubber tubbing??
It had a Halogen bulb in it so it was bright.

Those were the days!!

A LED headlamp should work very well and its an easy on off and you don't need a High Powered on either.

Hunt with a buddy and watch each others back...

Mosquito's and critters can be a problem but watch out for the 2 legged ones...

I hope your not talking about sneaking in to private areas and such as consequences can be immense....

i wouldn't sneak into restricted areas, I'm new to the hobby, I'm smart too, i know there are some professionals that would be able to do it but I'm still wet behind the ears when it comes to this hobby
