Nickels?

Aaron

Well-known member
I dont find to many nickels with my SE, how does the Etrac do with them?
Thanks!

The E-Trac is fantastic at finding Nickels !
I know there are different opinions out there - but for me - this is what I learned after digging approx. 200 Nickels last year.
By going by the target ID info. I have below - at this point - it seems that 3 out of every 4 Nickel targets I decide dig - actually turn out to be Nickels.
Like most people - I also look for a little depth so I don't dig a lot of junk. If you get a Nickel hit at 4" or deeper - most of the time - it will be a coin - and not a piece of junk aluminum.

CO - Target ID Numbers - Unlike other good targets - I look for a CO number "bounce" - between CO 11 to 15 - ( like from 11 to 13 and back again ) - if the CO ID stays on one number when crossed - it's almost always a pop-top, can slaw or similar. If CO number goes to 10 or below or 16 or above - it's usually not a Nickel. I know a lot of other people have found Nickels with FE numbers in the 8 to 18 range - but I never have.

FE - TARGET ID Numbers - As far a FE numbers go - with all other coins I usually go by FE numbers - with Nickels - if the FE numbers are all over the place - it usually means its a Nickel - if the FE number sticks - its usually a pop-top. Another key thing I look for ... It seems the deeper the Nickel is - the more FE numbers will bounce around - if the the Nickel is 5" - 6" down or deeper - the FE numbers are usually all over the place.

I know this info. sounds a little wierd - but it seems to work.
Good Luck !

Thanks alot for the indepth post, I'm going to print it out.

Thanks for the info I will start to watch for them...

Generally when the E-Trac gives you a solid CO of 13 both ways it's going to be a nickle. I have dug nickles at CO 12 and CO 11 (on edge) When it bounces to 14 and 15 most likely can slaw or pull tab. Two Tone Ferrous is a killer for Nickles. So many nickles are passed over because of similarity to pull tabs and any trash next to them seems to skew the numbers more on nickles than other coins.

I have real good luck when I see a 12-14 solid signal. I have pulled more coin than can fodder out of the ground. I just found a very nice V nickle that was co14. Good solid signals are most of the time a coin. In my world at least. Good hunting

I have never found a nickel with my ETRAC, however I only have 4.5 hours use with it.

The ETRAC is great at finding all other coins, even if very deep.

Heh..its funny how this thread poped up, and I posted it a few weeks before I got my Etrac. Now that I have it and have over 30hrs on it (nothing I know), and I dig alot of pulltabs... I've still yet to find a nickel.

this week two times I have had deep nickels come in at 01-12........odd huh?

Not really. Twice now I've dug early Wheat Pennies at 8 to 10 inch's reading 01-31 and 01-38. The numbers were not right but the audio sound was so I dug them.

I guess I'm just not lucky. I have dug numerous 12-14 12-15 signals and so far have dug only one V-nickle and two war nickles, all the rest have been the small rings off of tabs or the tab only. I've had very good luck on 12-13 readings with getting nickles, even got a nice 1936 buffalo nickle. Rick-IL

dug 10 war nickles last yr, can't remember any being 12-12, they were always higher 12-17...14-17...some were even in the 20's

Do you mean that TTF is great for finding nickels or terrible for finding nickels?

I have only owned my E-Trac for a little over a month, but I have many hours of hunting with it. (In factory "Coins" mode.) So far I have found over 150 coins and not one single nickel. All of the 12-12, 12-13 signals I dig end up being pieces of pull tabs.

I mean TTF is AWESOME at finding nickels, the ONLY time 12-12 is nickels for me is when they are SHALLOW, the other day at the park I dug a buffalo 5-6" deep and it was 07-14, very, very rare for them to ever be 12-12 for me. A couple weeks ago I dug a real deep V nickel that was 01-12

TTF definetly finds the Nickles, my impression is nearby junk skews the nickle signals more than other coin signals, that is my impression. TTF allows you to isolate it much better.

The first time I used my new Etrac, I recovered three nickels at 12-13, one was a decent 1926 buffalo nickel....on the same day I also found a gold men's wedding band...cool!...
