Newbie Question

I have been detecting for about six months, with an old XLT, I bought on EBay. I am looking at the new White detectors and do not understand the difference between the DFX, the V3i and the VX3. They seem to be about the same with minor differences in features. I know that the differences must be important to justify different models, however I don't know enough about this sport to appreciate when each of the 3 detectors would be needed. I seem to do most of my detecting in parks and schools. Can someone give me a short explanation of when I would want to use each of the three.

We travel in a motorhome about 8 months of the year, so we are in a new town every week or so. All of the travel is in Washington, Oregon, California and Arizona. Home is San Jose, CA.

Thanks,
Luke

While the XLT is a fine machine the DFX has more scope to optimise the best signal in difficult ground with the amount of adjustments availiable. The V3i has even more capability and is more sensative to small targets. These added capabilities come at a price though. The more complicated a machine becomes the steeper the learning curve becomes which I think is why Whites brought out the VX3 which simplifies the V3i , takes its best features and simplifies them with fewer adjustments to complicate matters.I think all three machines will perform well in parks and schools but in bad ground conditions the V3i and VX3 should perform better than the XLT or DFX.

I started detecting in 2005 started out with the XLT and in 2007 went to the DFX and in 2011 went to the V3i out of all three detector the DFX was the hardest to learn . The one thing I like about the V3i is that there is very little changes to do to the program turn it on and go. I have been using my V3i now for two month and really liking it what a detector . If I was going from the XLT I would go with the V3i it has it all and if you did not need all the features they are there when you want them.:twodetecting::whites::thumbup:

The good news is that we are camping in Eugene, OR this week, so I will roll over to Sweethome tomorrow and see what White recommends for my type of detecting. Thanks for the advice.

I went with the VX3. The learning curve begins....

Either find a dealer, or as suggested visit the factory.

Rob,
I went by the factory yesterday and tried them out. I found a wheatie in the test pit, but I put it back. The VX3 felt more familiar after using the XLT, so I went with it.

I wish you luck. Rob

Lukeaa got his detector thread closed.
