New Whites M6......some thoughts......

Here we go.. a new detector from Whites for a retail price of 699$.

Now we ask for more features and performance than the DFX or MXT has for a lower price. I called Whites today and asked questions about it.

Q: How is the performance compared to the MXT ?

A: About the same, but no mode switch or threshold control, because
it is silent.

Q: What does is have what the MXT does not ?

A: Silent threshold and Tone ID and a lower price.

My thoughts about these answers:

No MXT Relic Mode, No MXT Prospecting Mode but a disc control to turn it to 0 disc and i can do some relic hunting too.

If you are not into prospecting and do relic huntig just once in a while this could be the detector for you.

Yes.....Tone ID and silent threshold. That is what the coin and jewelry hunter asked for.

Sure the MXT should be better for prospecting and relics because it has modes designed for it. That is what you can expect for 100 $ more.

I wish too Whites would put that silent coin mode in the MXT. And dual frequency, a backlight and Tone ID would be nice too.

But then it would cost more than an MXT and be the new top of the line detector from Whites. Yes i would pay 1000 $ for a detector like that.
But some guys just want to coin/jewelry hunt and don't have 1000 bucks to spend. The new Whites M6 may fit their needs for a 560$ streetprice.

And now the question is: If somebody wants a nice coin /jewelry detector is he buying the Whites M6 for a streetprice of 560 $ or the Minelab XTerra for 598$ ?

The Whites has better Target ID resolution, more tones and automatic ground tracking for a lower price. And if performance is equal to the MXT it does not have to hide.
I don`t want to hype a detector that was not even in my hands, but for that price it sounds promising.

Andy

There will never be a detector that will be accepted by the masses:
one that is everything to everybody: We don't like change but will eventually accept the inevitable.... a machine that will probably fill a niche.... Again, Good thinkin, Best to you, RichardnTn

You're almost describing the DFX with your wish list. I know what you are saying though. And I know that some don't care for the DFX for whatever reason. I don't think the M6 replaces anything. I think it is what it is, a Mid-Range unit for those people who have no desire to spend $1000.00 for what is considered by some to be the top end unit.

A MXT with an outside dual Frequency switch and 7 Tones with a backlight would be a better detector for me than the DFX.

hh,
Andy

You can run the DFX at 15kz only, just like the MXT and it has a backlight.Only difference is it has more then 7 tones.

I know the DFX has these features but i don`t like it because of its program and settings menu. Just to many settings for me.

I like the outside controls and switches of the MXT better.

If i recall it right the MXT has the more advanced GB system and the filtering is done by the software (no hardware filters). Changing the modes by just flipping a switch is a great feature.

I did not hear about one guy getting more depth out of his DFX with all the programming and settings than the MXT gets right out of the box.
For me the MXT is more top of the line than the DFX because it is user friendlier and gets great depth too.

hh,
Andy

I rarely touch my settings. It's just load and go.If sites trashy,I just adjust the filters and recovery speed.Once you've got your programs set up,it's easier and quicker to use than the MXT.Bonus is the tone id and dual freqs.MXT won't come close to the DFX on a saltwater beach.I bet it wouldn't get half the depth.YOu can mimic the MXT with itr if you want to also.Just turn the tone id off and switch to 15kz.I used an MXT in a park last year.Depth was fine, but starring at the meter after every beep trying to isolate and analyze each target was quite a strain and absolutely NO fun at all for me.

I think it's the new industry thing to be coming out with a new model once or twice a year, that's what keeps the consumer buying. There's always the people that just have to have the latest and greatest, never really realizing the full potential of the machine they got.
A good example here is inkjet printers and cameras. I'm a part time photographer and try to keep up at least knowledge - wise with the latest thing coming out. I buy a new camera every 2 years and a new printer every year (because I wear them out), and it seems that a new model will come out 2 months later replacing the one I just bought. My 5 meg camera is old hat, replaced by a 7 meg model and the 4800 dpi printer is now 9600 dpi. I don't know if these new models do a better job, but some would think that and jump right on one as soon as they hit the shelves.

I have a DFX and probably will for years to come because it's a machine that you can grow with once you learn it. It's a different machine every time I go out or every time I switch coils. Oh, I have been tempted by the hype of Explorer's better depth and then I find another combination of settings on the DFX that gains me another inch. I haven't had another machine other than White's (4 so far)., so I am not knocking anyone else's brand. It would be a pretty boring world if the only car to buy would be the Honda Civic. Companies give us choices and that's a great thing, but sometimes I wonder if they over - saturate us with flashy new models and "proven" performance before they are even in the hands of who counts the most...us, the consumer. Dave,

Do you and and everyone else want to know why Whites developed the DFX? let me tell you. Multi-frequency was the in thing and they had to have one to compete or lose sales to other brands. That is the one and only reason for the DFX. The multitude of adjustability built into it is just a bunch of fluff to sell it as a superior detector.. Which it definitely is NOT!

That my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

Brad,

Thanks for the "awakening". Some posts are best made on unbranded forums. Still those are my feelings about the DFX.

Tom

You call it the way you see it. Do it honeslty and based upon your own experiences and, if others don't like it .... too bad!

As for the DFX, I really hoped it would have provided something in the way of performance for me, but it didn't. Too often a manufacturer gets caught up in trying to compete for a certain segment of the market and sort of forgets about the market that they already have secure! Sad, isn't it?

Especially since they are capable of so much more.

Personally I am itching to get my hands on the M6 along with a couple exra coils. The MXT was and still is one of the best freshwater beach machines I have ever used. Name another detector if you can, that is as sensitive to the smallest gold jewelry using the stock large coil as it is with a smaller coil and on the reverse is also nearly as deep on bigger gold with the small coils as it is with the stock.

Basing on a general use detector on a gold nugget detector platform was a very good idea.

That fluff as you call it,is simply beyond you.RECOVERY SPEED is NOT fluff. The Exploder tried to copy this from the XLT with their fast/deep setting.Only difference is that it has only 2 recovery speeds. The DFX's recovery speed can adjusted from 1 - 30.Hot rock settings, sweep speed settings, adjustable freqs.,etc.All that fluff as you so ignorantly call it,allows me to set the DFX up for ANY site I come across.BUt again,SINCE YOU MOST LIKELY NEVER HAVE EVEN SEEN ONE.You wouldn't understand anything i'm talking about. Why don't you go ask Charles on the Ploder fourm how deep the DFX.See Tom,I've hunted with him and crossed checked targets with him. He's actually seen a DFX used by someone who understands how to use it and will set you straight.

never seem to actually find anything. It's always,"I've owned 6 DFX's"or whatever and they didn't impress me at all.Whites really dropped the ball on that one, hehe.Obviously if they owned that many, they were totally clueless as how to use it.Or the ones who buy a machine, use it for an hour and then trash it in a two page post. Those guys are the funniest by far.Now we have guys looking at pictures of new detectors that haven't even been released yet and thy're trashing them.THese guys just may make me laugh more than the 1-hour test guys.Personnally,i've had my DFX for 5 years and am still learning. As you can see by the guys on the DFX fourm, the longer they use it the better they get. This goes for any detector. That's why the guys who make all the finds are the ones that stick with one detector and actually use the thing.DAve

Just honest. The DFX I had was a piece of junk that I felt must have had something wrong with it, but after talking with MANY other non-biased users there was only one conclusion that could be drawn regarding the DFX.

I'm glad it works for you Dave. Really I am.

Tom

I've never had a problem (other than myself) with the DFX. I did need to "unlearn" the XLT somewhat. Once I did that everything seemed to come together. I've used one for, I think, about three and a half years and have no complaints. It goes deep for me, has allowed me to make what at times were necessary changes due to a new area I was hunting, and has never shut off on its own. Do I think I understand it fully? No, probably not. But like any other detector you never seem to know it all. At least I don't.
